Koriyama Castle: Sakura Paradise!
Tsutsui Junkei, The Warrior Who Unified Yamato, Builds a Castle in Koriyama!
Kōriyama Castle was a Japanese castle in what is now the city of Yamato-Kōriyama, Nara Prefecture, Japan. The Sengoku daimyo Tsutsui Junkei started construction of the castle, and Toyotomi Hidenaga made it his residence. In the Edo period, it became the headquarters of the Kōriyama Domain. During this time it was held variously by members of the Mizuno, Okudaira Matsudaira, Honda, Fujii Matsudaira, and Yanagisawa clans.
Today, many walls and moats are preserved in a public park in the city. The Yanagisawa Shrine stands within the grounds.
Many influential warriors battled to gain power over this region. However, in the Edo period a succession of dominant lords were deployed to rule Koriyama realm.
It was Tsutsui Junkei who united the Yamato province by overcoming the rising local samurais, one after another. His achievement of Yamato unification, supported by Oda Nobunaga, took place in 1576, and his entrance into Koriyama Castle was accomplished in 1580. Koriyama was a bustling area where markets stood in rows, but Junkei's arrival brought even more prosperity to the town.
There is a famous episode about Junkei. After the Incident of Honnō-ji in 1582,(The Incident at Honnō-ji refers to the forced suicide on June 21, 1582 of Japanese daimyo Oda Nobunaga at the hands of his samurai general Akechi Mitsuhide. This occurred in Honnō-ji, a temple in Kyoto, ending Nobunaga's quest to consolidate centralized power in Japan under his authority.) Junkei was asked by his ally Akechi Mitsuhide, to send troops to Horagatoge pass for military assistance. However, impressed by the superior forces of the opponent, Junkei brooded over whether to accept Mitsuhide's demand, but finally he made up his mind to wait and see which side to take. This incident has been handed down through a Japanese sayingHoragatoge o kimekomu or to wait and see at Horagatoge, which is now used in a negative sense, to come down on the right side of the fence.

Hydrangea flowers at Asukayama Park (飛鳥山のあじさい)
** Caution: there are some loud train noises, so you may want to lower the volume... **
In Japan, Hydrangea (called ajisai in Japanese) is a flower that is associated with the rainy season before the before the summer arrives.
There's a narrow passageway along Asukayama Park (in Oji, Tokyo; a park that's actually famous for cherry blossoms in the spring) that is lined with Ajisai of many varieties. It's a well-known spot to see such flowers, but doesn't attract *that* many people, and it was rainy this day, so there were even fewer people.
The flowers are located near the tracks for 3 rail lines and a Shinkansen bullet train, so I hope you enjoy the juxtaposition of the loud and busy trains and the quiet and calm of the ajisai.

Jizo Bosatsu and other Buddhist Images
This video is a montage of photos of (mostly) stone statues of Jizo Bodhisattva followed by images of various Buddhas and Bodhisattvas. Jizo is the protector of women, children, and travelers. He also goes into the hells to save beings who are tormented by various woes.
The accompanying music is Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622 - II. Adagio - Mozart by William McColl (musopen.org) licensed under Creative Commons.
Note that this video combines two others previously published, which I deleted (as I did three others) due to alleged copyright claims with regard to the music used, in spite of the fact that the music had creative commons licensing. I redid these five to avoid opting for ads to pop up on my videos, and not wishing to go through a dispute process with regard to the incorrect claims.

Cherry blossoms in Mt Yoshino
On April 4, we visited the one of the most popular spots for enjoying 'the cherry blossoms. It's located in Nara prefecture next to Osaka where I live. Nara was an ancient capital of Japan in the 7th century.
The video is taken from the best place to see the blossoms called Thousand trees at one glance in Yoshimizu shrine. Do you want to know what the Shinto priest speaking?
He says when you watch the blossoms, Don't look down them. You should look up them. Why? I think he believes cherry trees have some thing spiritual thing.
