Tonbridge City centre in Kent England See traveller reviews tourist attractions
For lovers of culture, there are two theatres – the EM Forster Theatre at Tonbridge School and The Oast Theatre – and annual events including the town’s popular Food and Drink Festival (May), Tonbridge Carnival (June), Tonbridge Castle Music Weekend (July), Tonbridge Calling music festival (August) and the thrilling Dragon Boat Racing event on the river (September).
Tonbridge is overshadowed by its more glamorous neighbours, Tunbridge Wells and Sevenoaks, all too often. But this historic market town has a lot to shout about.
For a start it boasts some of the easiest commuting connections and best schools in the area – a fact which hasn’t been wasted on the many young professionals moving to the town to start families.
It also benefits from a stunning location, set on the banks of the River Medway, with an 11th-century castle at its heart and surrounded by beautiful countryside. Visitors are attracted by the popular indoor-outdoor swimming pool, as well as a multi award-winning country park, a superb, award-winning Farmers’ Market, regular community events and a new indoor trampoline centre.
There’s no doubt that 2016 was a year of exciting growth for Tonbridge. It’s true to say that in the past the town centre has suffered during difficult economic conditions but recent renovations in the High Street and several new housing developments have given it the boost it needed.

Tonbridge is a market town in the English county of Kent. Tonbridge is located on the River Medway, approximately 4 miles north of Royal Tunbridge Wells, 12 miles south west of Maidstone and 29 miles (47 km) south east of London. Tonbridge belongs to the administrative borough of Tonbridge and Malling.
Tonbridge stands on spur of higher land where the marshy River Medway could be more easily forded. Ancient trackways converged at this point. Tonbridge Castle was built here in the 11th century by Richard Fitz Gilbert. In medieval times, Tonbridge was considered an important strategic settlement. The King intended it to be a walled town, and a charter was issued allowing for walls to be built.
Tonbridge School, the famous public school, was established in 1552 under letters patent of Edward VI, to educate the sons of local gentry and farmers (There was already a nearby school in existence for poorer boys, now Sevenoaks School.). During Queen Mary's reign Tonbridge was involved in an unsuccessful uprising against the Queen's marriage to the King of Spain
Major industries include light engineering, printing and publishing, distribution and financial services. Tonbridge, together with its neighbour Tunbridge Wells, has been designated by the South East Assembly as a Regional Hub.
Tonbridge railway station is one of Kent's busiest with 4.1 million passengers using it each year. It is an important railway junction with lines to London, Ashford, Hastings and Redhill. The town is also served by the A21 trunk road between London and Hastings and the A26 between Maidstone and Brighton. It is also close to the M25 motorway. Tonbridge is served by numerous bus routes, most of which are run by Arriva Southern Counties.

Tonbridge Castle {VlogMas Day 8}
Day 8 of VlogMas and we are at Tonbridge Castle.
Following the Norman Conquest, Richard Fitz Gilbert was granted land in Kent to guard the crossing of the River Medway. He erected a simple Motte-and-bailey castle on the site. To dig the moat and erect the motte 50,000 tonnes of earth were moved. In 1088, the de Clare family (descendants of Fitz Gilbert) rebelled against King William II. His army besieged the castle. After holding for two days the castle fell and as punishment the king had both the castle and the town of Tonbridge burnt to the ground. Before 1100, the de Clares replaced the wooden castle with a stone shell keep. This was reinforced during the thirteenth century, and in 1295 a stone wall was built around the town.
The twin towered gatehouse was built by Richard de Clare, third Earl of Hertford or his son Gilbert.Construction of the gatehouse took 30 years, being completed in 1260.The gatehouse shares many similarities with the ones at Caerphilly Castle built by Gilbert in 1268-1271. The great seal of England was temporarily kept here during one of Edward I's visits to France.
The castle was not lived in between 1521 and the late 18th century, except for a short period during the civil war.The mansion was added in 1793. Both castle and mansion are Grade I listed buildings.

Exploring the River Medway from Tonbridge in Kent
Today I am walking the river Medway in Tonbridge, Kent with my avid viewer and host, Nigel Slater. His son, Arun, and he are showing me the canalized section that leads from the town north east towards the Thames Estuary.
I am interested in the town lock, the old gasometer and the warehouses. We start out walk at the impressive Tonbridge Castle gatehouse.

River Medway
Morning colours and sounds in River Medway, Rochester
The River Medway, which is almost entirely in Kent, England, flows for 70 miles (113 km) from just inside the West Sussex border to the point where it enters the Thames Estuary. The Medway Valley Walk follows the river from Rochester to Tonbridge along the bank most of the way above Allington. It starts on the Saxon Shore Way at Rochester. The North Downs Way crosses the river using the Medway Viaduct or motorway bridge.
Ancient sites abound throughout the length of the River Medway. The area around Aylesford is a particularly important Stone Age site: the Medway megaliths are a group of Neolithic chamber tombs including the Coldrum Stones and Kit's Coty House. Bronze Age ornaments and beakers have been found all along the river; and burial sites and other finds come from the pre-Roman Iron Age. The Romans have left evidence of many villas in the lower Medway Valley; and burial sites of the Jutes have also been found.
MEDWAY VALLEY WALK: Tonbridge to Maidstone
On this day, I took up an idea I had and that was to walk most of the Medway Valley Walk from Tonbridge to Maidstone here in Kent. The walk is around 15 1/2 miles on paper but after a few zigzags and a walk to the station it ended up being about 17 miles.
This was a big challenge to me as I'm on the road to getting fit again to go with some big weight loss I've done in the last 9 months (54lbs / 24.5Kg)
The walk is long but flat and very pleasant and good paths and easy navigation....you follow the river for 95% of the way!
