The Vepa Vava'u Ocean Initiative to preserve Tonga's Ocean
WAITT Institute: Tonga has unique ocean resources that bring prosperity and health to the country. Protecting our ocean is an investment for the future. We made an animation to show you how we can preserve these resources. Follow us to learn more about the community consultations that are going on and our work to protect Tonga's ocean. Thank you to Reef Patrol for the animation and content by Waitt Institute and Vepa Vava'u. #protectyourocean #tonga

We all know the people of Tonga have a unique relationship with the sea.
The ocean is intertwined with our culture, history & economy.
We use the ocean for so many things, like fishing, gleaning, aquaculture, industries like yachting and shipping, and of course relaxation.
Tonga is made up of four island groups.
Tonga is famous for its high biodiversity and coral reefs.
These ecosystems help to support our livelihoods and bring tourism, helping our economy.
But whats beyond our inshore reefs? The open ocean is important for commercial fisheries like tuna and snapper.
We usually think of mountains as cold, snowy areas, but the deep sea has its own underwater seamounts.
Seamounts are hotspots for marine life, especially species that we fish for.
Tonga is also home to the Tonga trench, the second deepest place on the planet!
It’s 10,882 metres!
We still have so much to learn about animals in the deep sea, but Tonga is facing threats to the health of our ocean.
People want to begin mining in the deep sea, fisheries might be harvesting fish too quickly, and agricultural runoff can pollute the water.
That’s why it’s important for us to make plans about how we will use our ocean.
We need to understand what activities will be done and where.
Creating an ocean plan will help make sure that Tonga’s oceans healthy and productive in the future, both inshore & offshore.
There are two different types of areas that can help keep Tonga’s oceans healthy: Marine Protected Areas and Special Management Areas.
Marine Protected Areas can be inshore or offshore, they prevent activities like fishing and mining so that the areas can recover. Marine Protected Areas can help fish grow, and when they are well managed, fish will multiply and leave the area. This means fishermen will have more fish to catch in the future.
Special management areas, known as SMAs are community management plans that protect important areas from being overfished. This helps the communities economy and ensures that the island is healthy.
It’s important to have both marine protected areas and special management areas, inshore and offshore to preserve the amazing resources that Tonga has in its waters.
We all rely on the ocean, and it’s all of our responsibility to protect it.
Let’s all work together to make Tonga healthy, and make it’s a place where we can all prosper in the future.
Whale Swim Adventures
During late August and early September, 2012, I joined eight other people swimming with Humpback Whales in Vavaú in the Kingdom of Tonga, one of only 3 places in the world where you can get in the water with these beautiful creatures.
This video is a compilation of videos from a number of the people on that trip.
The music, apart from my own very bad version of the theme from Gilligan's Island, is performed by local people on the island of Utungake, part of the Vavaú group of islands. I recorded these with their permission.
I hope you enjoy the sights and sounds as much as I did.

TOO CLOSE FOR COMFORT????????...Crazy humpback whale encounters in Tonga!
Have you ever wondered what it's like to come face to face with a 40 ton sea creature? Well, so did we! So our crew sailed to a group of 170 islands in the south pacific that form the kingdom of tonga to try and swim with these gentle giants...and the result was more than we could have ever imagined.
Swimming with humpback whales in Tonga was an unforgettable experience, and we hope you enjoy this video!
