Today we are going to Turangi on the edge of Lake Taupo. First, we’re checking out Opotaka, which is where the Ka Mate Haka was created, otherwise known as the All Blacks Haka. Opotaka is also a great place to see Maori artifacts and get amazing view of Mt Tongariro. After exploring Opotaka in Turangi, we head to Lake Rotopounamu to do the Lake Rotopounamu Track. This Turangi walk is not to be missed on the edge of the Tongariro National Park. Check out this short Tongariro National Park walk.

Tongariro Northern Circuit - New Zealand Great Walks - New Zealand's Information Network
This guide has been compiled by the New Zealand Information Network to introduce you to these crown jewels of our tramping track network. New Zealand's most popular tramping/trekking tracks and a river journey are collectively known as the Great Walks.
Enter into the heart of a vast moonscape of tortured rock that makes up Tongariro, one of the world's first national parks (1887).
The Tongariro Northern Circuit is a 41 km alpine tramp, which winds around Mts Ngauruhoe and Tongariro, and offers superb views of Ruapehu, the highest mountain in the North Island. The tramp includes the Tongariro Crossing, which is rated as 'The Best One-Day Walk in New Zealand', because of its dramatic volcanic formations, glacial valleys, craters and lava flows.
The track is normally walked in a clockwise direction from Whakapapa Village over 5 days, staying in 4 well-spaced huts, or nearby campsites. Great Walks passes can be purchased from the visitor centres at Whakapapa, Turangi or Ohakune before entering the track.
The track starts behind the Grand Chateau in Whakapapa, and winds through red tussock, mountain hebe and beech forest to the Mangatepopo Hut. Day 2 involves a fascinating walk up the lava flows of the Mangatepopo Valley past Soda Springs and up to the South Crater. From here there is an option to climb Mt Ngauruhoe, by following a poled route to the base of the mountain and then zigzagging up to the summit (2 hours return).
Continuing on to the Red Crater you catch whiffs of sulphur in the air. There is a great photo opportunity here as you look down on the brilliant Emerald Lakes and the Blue Lake, which are old explosion craters filled with mineral-laden water. The track then leads across tortuous terrain to the Ketetahi Hut, near an active hot spring area.
On Day 3 a steep descent into a volcanic wonderland of lava formations and waterfalls leads to Oturere Hut, and Day 4 involves numerous stream crossings on the way to Waihohonu Hut. The final day sees a climb to the Tama Saddle and Tama Lakes before passing the Taranaki Falls and returning to the Whakapapa Village.
The Tongariro Northern Circuit offers an intimate view of an active volcanic region, and visions of the contorted landscapes will remain with you for a long time.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing New Zealand VLOG
We walked the long stretch that is the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand. After completely messing up and accidentally driving all the way to the west coast.
Tongariro Crossing is also known as the set for Mordor in Lord of the Rings. If you ever wondered what it was like, this should give you an idea.
Cameras used:
Sony RX100
Pixel 2XL (the crappy low res stuff is a hyperlapse app called Microsoft Hyperlapse. It seems to have very inconsistent bit rates)

Tongoriro alpine crossing
Apsolutly stunning, video diary of our day hike over tingariro alpine crossing, we caught the bus from the camp site we stayed at tongariro Holiday Park and arrived at the start half hr later. The hike took about 4.5hrs and was around 12miles long. The route was more challenging then expected but anyone with decent fitness will manage. The 360 degree views on the way up are stunning but noting beats the summit. The walk back. Down drags on a little but is quite pleasant. This day was 100% one of the best days we had in new zealand and whilst back packing.

Silica Rapids Walk, Tongariro National Park :: Long White Gypsy
Tongariro National Park is arguably one of New Zealand's biggest attractions. Home to some of the best scenery in the North Island, and three of New Zealand's most recently active volcanoes (Mts. Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngāruahoe) it is a hit with outdoor enthusiasts the world over.
It also houses some of the best short walks the North Island has to offer. This summer, I'll be hiking as many of them as possible to give you a taste of what's available.
This week I'm hitting the Silica Rapids Walk. It's a 7km (2hr30min) round trip hike, which is accessible from Whakapapa Village at the top of State Highway 48. Drive 250m past the Whakapapa Visitor Centre (Department of Conservation) and park in the carpark on the right hand side of the road opposite the Whakapapa fire station.
The first 30 minutes of the track traverses lush beech forest, all the while weaving to cross and follow the Waikare Stream up to the rapids. As you near the rapids, the landscape begins to turn from forest to the barren environment distinctive of alpine slopes.
It will take you approximately 1hr15min to reach the creamy white terraces of the Silica Rapids. There are plenty of areas for you to stop and eat a light snack or picnic lunch as you gaze upon the turbulent waters as they cascade over the rapids. This is national park land, so make sure to stick to the boardwalk as much as possible, to protect the fragile ecosystem of our alpine country.
When you've had your fill of the rapids, take your pick as to whether to head back to the carpark the way you came, or return via the Bruce Road alternate (approximately 65 minutes return to the carpark). The track to the Bruce Road is distinctly different from that which takes you to the rapids, the first part comprising barren and swampy land, eerily reminiscent of the Dead Marshes in the hugely successful Lord of the Rings movies (I couldn't resist humming sections of In Dreams as I hiked along, perhaps the most recognisable composition from the Lord of the Rings soundtrack). The second part traverses the lee side of the mountain's alpine slopes, and as such is dry tussock for much of it. The views from this side of the track are stunning, and on a clear day you'll get excellent views of Mt. Ngāruahoe and Mt. Ruapehu. For those geological enthusiasts out there, you won't be disappointed in the wealth of volcanic geological features you'll spy along the way.
The short road walk back to Whakapapa Village will take you around 20 mins to complete, and is an easy (and relatively safe) downhill stride. Make sure to keep on the shoulder to the right hand side of the road. This road can be unpredictable, so most traffic tends to travel relatively slowly.
**TONGARIRO NATIONAL PARK IS AN ALPINE ENVIRONMENT and you should always check the weather forecast (via MetService or the Whakapapa Visitor Center) and track conditions (via DOC website) before you go - links to both below. Conditions in the national park can change dramatically and quickly, and many people have lost their lives through not being properly prepared. Be prepared for COLD, WET and/or WINDY weather AT ALL TIMES (even in the summer months).**

Tongariro Alpine Crossing 2018
Here are highlights from the 19-kilometer, 7-hour walk along the Tongariro Alpine Crossing on November 22, 2018. I made careful preparations and gave myself a few days to wait for decent weather. Do not underestimate the trail, terrain, or environment. There were two deaths on the trail in October/November 2018 - including one the day after I hiked it.

Hiking Tongariro Alpine Crossing During Storm
So it was my second time hiking the Tongariro Alpine Crossing and we got caught in a storm right after reaching the Mount Ngaurahoe (Mt Doom from Lord of the Rings) summit. The day started sunny and beautiful as you can see in the video, so that why is so important to be prepared for drastic weather changes.
Despite the storm (which wasn't so bad and actually made the crossing more exciting) I managed to finish the crossing in less than 6 hours of active walking (not counting the stops for snacks and photos) and 6h30 in total.
We started the hiking by the Ketetahi Car Park (800m altitude), which makes the walk a little harder (the usual start is by the Mangatepopo Car Park 1100m altitude).
The video was recorded with my GoPro 5 Black (selfie stick) and GoPro 3 White (chest mount). It was edited using Quik.
Tongariro Alpine Crossing is 19.4km of pure rugged New Zealand Beauty.
