Tongariro River Trail Mountain Bike Trail Guide, Turangi, New Zealand
The Tongariro River Trail is a relaxing ride, along one of the North Island’s most popular rivers.
It is perfectly suited for families and casual riders seeking to explore the native bush and clear waters of the river, without having to ride a long distance.
The track is a grade 2 trail on mostly flat terrain, making it suitable for children and beginner riders to enjoy.
It’s a 15km loop track of undulating, yet comfortable ground, which will take a family a couple of hours to complete (or close to an hour for more experienced riders).

Tongariro River Trail, Turangi :: Long White Gypsy
The Tongariro River Trail is a beautifully scenic walk through and about the Tongariro River estuary in the Southern Lake Taupo region.
The Tongariro River is one of the main tributaries into Lake Taupo (the largest freshwater lake in New Zealand and second largest in Oceania) and is New Zealand’s most fished river (being famous to anglers for its rainbow trout fisheries).
The track is shared use by mountain bikers and hikers, and dogs are permitted on the trail (yay!).
HIKER TIP: The Department of Conservation website recommends that hikers wishing to avoid crossing busy State Highway 1 should start their hike at the Turangi iSite. I would instead recommend, to avoid the need for ANY road walking, that hikers begin instead from the Taupahi Reserve (just off Taupahi Road). You can join the loop track from either the southern or northern end of the reserve, with the northern entrance offering the quickest access to the scenic lookout for those not wishing to complete the full 15km loop.
The trail along the eastern bank of the Tongariro River is mainly through native bush and adjacent to farmland, whereas on the western side the trail follows the route of State Highway 1 (thus making it slightly noisier). It is mainly flat and easy walking, although the Department of Conservation website states that there is a small hill to ascend if you venture to the lookout (we did not make it this far, having completed the majority of the loop track first).
Along the way you will be greeted with stunning views of the Tongariro River as well as vistas towards the Tongariro National Park. There are a few bridge crossings to complete, which do not fail to disappoint, and ample opportunity to wander up and down the banks of the river along the way.
I would definitely recommend this track for all hikers and families, as a great way to get outdoors and enjoy the best of what New Zealand has to offer!

Getting There :
The trail begins at the car park next to the Tongariro River Bridge on State Highway 1 in Turangi, where you can park your car. Alternatively you can take a shuttle service from Taupo or Turangi to the trail head.
There are alternative starting points along the trail where you can park your car at the scenic reserves and begin your ride from there. This means shorter routes can be tailored to suit your particular needs. Contact the Turangi i-SITE or one of the shuttle services who will help you customize the best drop off and pick up point for you.
The trail has a variety of scenic locations to stop off at for a picnic lunch, or even a quick dip in the river to cool off during the hot summer months.
The Tongariro National Trout Centre is also on route, where you can get up close to the beautiful trout which inhabit the Tongariro River, or view the endangered native Whio (Blue Duck) at the newly purpose-built hardening facillity.
The trail can be ridden in all weather conditions and mobile phone coverage is good throughout the ride.
