CAMBODIA: TONLE SAP RIVER - REVERSAL FLOW
Natural Sound
Huge crowds have gathered in the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, to celebrate a unique phenomenon; the reversal in the flow of the Tonle Sap River.
The occasion is marked with colourful boat races and an appearance by the king, who looked well, despite warning recently that his health is failing.
The riverbanks of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, were full to bursting for the water festival on Sunday, with virtually all of city's population out to watch the races.
The longboat races recall the days of the Angkorian empire of eight hundred years ago and Cambodia's great king, Jayavarman VII.
The races mark the occasion when the king's navy waited on the river to halt an attempted invasion by the Muslim Chams and managed to preserve the sprawling domain of Phnom Penh.
Today the occasion is more about horseplay than hostility, although the races are still taken very seriously.
Communities across Cambodia prepare their vessels for months; shaping and painting them, and training the crews.
Victory can also bring fame and fortune to the rowers and their villages.
The reversal in the direction of the Tonle Sap is one of the world's greatest natural phenomena, caused by the end of the monsoon rains which overwhelm the river for months and push it northwards.
With so many visitors travelling to the city to mark the occasion , a huge effort now goes into maintaining law and order. Six thousand police officers are put on duty and brothels are closed by government order.
The three-day festival also gives the crowds a chance to see King Sihanouk.
Accompanied by his wife, Queen, the monarch received a prolonged ovation.
This, after he warned on two recent occasions that his health was failing.
Sihanouk is 77 years old and suffers from a range of illnesses, including cancer, which is currently in remission following regular trips to China for medical treatment.
Despite a chequered and controversial reign, he is revered by most Cambodians and is a force for national unity.

Chong Khneas Floating Village - Tonle Sap - Cambodia by Drone
Chong Khneas is a floating village near Siem Reap Cambodia. This is the fly over drone footage. review coming soon.
The village was originally formed by foreign fishermen who were unable to buy land.
It has now become a tourist trap and unscrupulous tour operators will gouge you for extra money.
guide books will recommend visiting the other floating villages a bit further south for a better experience.
Kampong Phluk and Kampong Khleang are a better choice.
see my review video: to be posted soon.

Tonle Sap: Saving Cambodia's Great Lake
While Cambodia has made some progress in providing water and sanitation services to its people, in the country still has the lowest water and sanitation coverage in East Asia and one of the lowest in the world. Many still rely on groundwater abstraction, rainwater collection, or surface water for their water needs, while sanitation is almost nonexistent.
These problems are compounded by poor sanitation awareness, with few people using latrines, clean water jars, boiled drinking water, or properly washed hands. Partly because of these conditions, the country's infant mortality rate is the second highest in Asia at 124 per 1,000 live births, and has even increased in the past decade. Many rural areas show high rates of waterborne and water-related diseases. In order to partially address the problem, rural water supply and sanitation have been built in five provinces around the Tonle Sap lake basin.
The Asian Development Bank aims for an Asia and Pacific free from poverty. Approximately 1.4 billion people in the region are poor and unable to access essential goods, services, assets and opportunities to which every human is entitled. Get involved. Share this video. Tonle Sap Lake! Floating Village Cambodia / Tonle Sap Lake - Cambodia
Tonle Sap Lake and Floating Fishing Village-Cambodia
Five provinces circled the area of Tonle Sap Lake, more than three million of population inhabited around the bank of the Lake and 90% of them earn a living by catching fish and making agricultures. As you can see on the map of Cambodia It stretches across the northwest section of the country.
The Lake is the largest fresh water in South East Asia. Its dimension changes depending on the monsoon and dry season. During raining season from June to October, the lake is filled by water flowing from the Mekong with 14 meters in depth and expands the surface of 10,000 square Kilometers. In dry season from November to May its size 3,000 square kilometers with two meters in depth and water flows out from the Lake to the Mekong, in and out flowing is the natural phenomenon occurrences. The flooded forest surrounding the edge of the lake is the best shelter and also very important for all kinds of fishes spawned and breeding babies. This lake providing many of biodiversities, over 300 species of fresh water fishes, as well as snakes, crocodiles, tortoises, turtles and otters. More than 100 varieties water birds including storks, pelicans, etc
The Lake is also an important commercial resource, providing more than half of the fish consumed in Cambodia. In harmony with the specialized ecosystems, the human occupations at the edges of the lake is similarly distinctive - floating villages, towering stilted houses, huge fish traps, and an economy and way of life deeply intertwined with the lake, the fish, the wildlife and the cycles of rising and falling waters
The lake located about 15 km south of Siem Reap town; you can make your journey from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh by express boat crossing the lake and dock at the village of Chong Khneas. Its takes only six hours, but this trip we may recommend you during Monsoon season. In dry season the boat sometimes stuck in mud because the water is low. There are several ways to see the culture and wildlife of the lake area depending on the amount of time you have and your interest.
Chong Khneas is the name of famous floating village at the edge of the lake. It locates at Southern part of Siem Reap town about 15 Km, and takes only 30 minutes by vehicles to the boat dock where there are always boats waiting for visitors. The boat trip through the floating village takes approximately two hours. You will explore the different of Khmer, Muslim and Vietnamese floating households and the floating markets, fisheries, clinics, schools, basketball course, pigsty and other boatloads of tourists.
Chong Khneas, was before very interesting, but now region is owned by private firm they did increasing prices and the area looks more commercial. The boat trip usually includes two stops: one at a touristy floating 'fish and bird exhibition' with a souvenir and snack shop, and the other at the very highly recommended Gecko Environment Centre, which offers displays and information introducing the ecology and biodiversity of the lake area.
Kampong Phluk: A 'floating village' on Cambodia's Tonle Sap Lake
During Cambodia's dry season, the fishing village of Kampong Phluk sits not far from the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake. During the summer, however, as monsoon rains fall on Southeast Asia and snow melts on the Tibetan Plateau, flood waters course their way down the Mekong River. So great is the flow, the the Tonle Sap River, a tributary of the Mekong, reverses the direction of flow, channeling excess flood waters into the Tonle Sap Lake, The water level in the lake rises as much as ten meters, and lakeside villages like Kampong Phluk find themselves atop the lake rather than al its edge. Buildings ten meters above ground level in the dry season find water lapping at their doorsteps in November, at the end of the rainy season, when filmed this video.

It refers to seasonally flood freshwater lake.
Lake and an attached river, the 120 km long Tonlé Sap River, that connects the lake to the Mekong River.

Chnok Tru Floating Village at Baribo District in Kampong Chhnang Province
We visited Chnok Tru village the first time but Mr. Sambo came here 2 times already. He lead the way to this place. Chnok Tru is a floating village on Tonle Sap river but we traveled to this place in dry season so we can get there by car. In rainy season, there's no road for car only boats can access to this village. They will live on a floating house in rainy season and catch fishes for a living.
Our trip start from Toul Kork in Phnom Penh city, we had breakfast at a restaurant near Camko city traffic light/circle and head off to national road no.5 to Kampong Chhnang province to pick up 3 more friends at Sala Lek 5. We continue to Boribo district and turn right at a fork road where Boribo district office is and go on a village path to Chnok Tru. It's dry and smelly as they make trey-prahok (salty fish paste preparing and processing). It's fishing village and community on Tonle Sap river. Most of Cambodian people living here but many Vietnamese people are living here too. It's a good place to catch fishes and can take a boat tour sightseeing the lives & floating houses on the river too. This place is located at Chnok Tru village, Chnok Tru commune, Baribo district, Kampong Chhnang province, Cambodia, Southeast Asia. This trip jointed by my wife, Mr. Sambo, Sambo's wife, Sambo's daughter, Mycurl, Somata, Narita, Narita's mom, and the 3 guys from Sala Lek 5 in Kampong Chhnang Mr. Mengheang, Pisey, Veasna.
