Footage shows start and scale of the fire at Toomer's Corner
One of the oak trees at Toomer's Corner was set on fire following Auburn's win over LSU on Saturday.
Surveillance footage appears to show a man walk up to the oak tree on W. Magnolia Ave., which had to be replanted during the remodeling process that started in 2015, and set some of the toilet paper hanging from it on fire.
An Auburn University spokesman said professor of horticulture Gary Keever inspected the tree Sunday morning.
Gary Keever inspected the tree from the ground Sunday morning and did see some defoliation on one side, Auburn University spokesman Mike Clardy told AL.com. We will get a lift up into the canopy as early as Monday to get a better look. We may not know for weeks the extent of the damage, depending on how the tree responds.
Auburn athletic director Jay Jacobs posted a pair of tweets Sunday morning. Jacobs said it was shocking and sad to wake up to see this fire on one of our Toomers Oaks and claimed Auburn police have suspect in custody.
However, as of 8:20 a.m. Sunday morning Lee County Sheriff Jay Jones told AL.com there had been no arrest(s) at this point.
After learning of Jacobs' claim of a suspect in custody, Jones verified with Lee County detention center staff. Jones told AL.com as of 8:38 a.m. Sunday, We are not holding anyone charged with any offense regarding the tree fire.
Messages left for an Auburn Police spokesman early Sunday have not been returned.
Auburn began allowing fans to roll the new oak trees, which were planted at Toomer's Corner in 2015, at the start of this season after suspending the tradition in 2013 due to the original oaks being poisoned in 2011.

Toomers Corner After 2010 BCS National Championship
The Tradition of rolling Toomers corner in Auburn, Alabama after the Auburn Tigers win a football game has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. This is the celebration of all the fans who couldn't make it to Arizona to support the team, but instead showed the nation how proud they were of the team after everything they went through during the season, and got the chance to represent the University and the State in 2010's BCS National Championship.
This video is the first hour and thirty minutes of Toomers Corner being rolled. I filmed until I ran out of memory in my camcorder. The celebration continued well into the night.
