TOOMPEA Hill in Tallinn | Šnelli Park
Toompea is a limestone hill in the central part of the city of Tallinn, the capital of Estonia. The hill is an oblong tableland, which measures about 400 by 250 metres, has an area of 7 hectares and is about 20–30 metres higher than the surrounding areas. In folklore the hill is known as the tumulus mound over the grave of Kalev, erected in his memory by his grieving wife.
The history of Toompea is closely linked to the history of rulers and power in Estonia. Today Toompea is the center of the Government of Estonia and the Riigikogu (parliament), both of which are often simply referred to as Toompea. The location of the Riigikogu is the Toompea Castle, situated in the southwestern corner of the hill and topped by the Tall Hermann tower. The flag on the top of the tower is one of the best-known symbols in Estonia of the government in force. Ever since the German Knights of the Sword first built a stone fortress here in 1227-29, every foreign empire that ruled Estonia used the castle as its base. The castle has been revamped countless times through the centuries, but still retains the basic shape it was given in the 13th and 14th centuries. From its front, visitors can see a pink, Baroque palace dating to the time of Catherine the Great. A look at its opposite side, visible from the base of the hill, gives a much more medieval perspective.
Toompea is part of the Tallinn Old Town UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tallinn's Toompea Hill, Estonia
Toompea Hill is the site of the Danish castle that founded Tallinn in 1219 and Danish aristocracy lived there. Surrounded by thick walls and entered by a gate tower, there were cathedrals - including the beautiful Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and my favorite Church to The Blessed Virgin - the pink Parliament building and spectacular views of the city and Baltic Sea.
FYI: The picturesque cobble-stoned streets are murder on your feet!

Tallinn , the capital of Estonia, lies on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, only 70 km (43 mi) south of Helsinki. At the historical and medieval heart of the city is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and filled with medieval houses and alleyways. The lower town spreads out from the foot of the hill, still protected by the remnants of a city wall. Around the city wall is a series of well-maintained green parks, great for strolling.
Medieval Old Town. Excellently preserved, built in the 15-17th centuries. This compact area is best explored on foot.
View to the Tallinn old town
Viru Gate, (Entrance to Viru Street). This section of town is known as All-Linn or Lower Town, as it's where the merchants and artisans of old Tallinn lived. Today, Viru is still Tallinn's trendiest shopping street and the entire All-Linn is the busiest (and most touristy) bit of Tallinn.
Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. a classic onion-domed 19th-century Russian Orthodox church that has become a touristy symbol of the city, to the annoyance of some who regard it as a symbol of oppression. It was almost demolished in 1924 during Estonia's first brief spell of independence, but the Soviets left it to moulder and it has been restored to its former glory.

Once again we visit the Cathedral Hill. The weather is pleasant, so we have a nice view from above. First, we visit the cathedral. Behind it is a small park with a terrace, which shows the panorama in the west. We follow the mountain slope direction north. The premier's seat has the best view. The old town is at your feet and the harbor is visible in the background. The small squares and narrow streets on the Cathedral Hill convey again the medieval ambiance that characterizes this city. Most of the ancient venerable houses are historical monuments and often rented to embassies or consulates.
We return to Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and can take a look. The parliament building stand opposite the cathedral.
To the west, we reach the Maiden's Tower (Neitsitorn), that houses a café. Here, the city wall with its integrated battlements is particularly well preserved.
We move again towards Town Hall Square and pass the Freedom Square and the restaurant Olde Hansa.
A visit to the Estonian History Museum gives us further impressions of the history of the city. The museum is housed in the medieval Great Guild Hall.
Across the street is the most renowned café of the city, the Café Maiasmokk. It is the oldest operating café in Tallinn and has been in the same location since 1864. On the first floor is a restaurant that serves characteristic Estonian dishes.
A special marzipan museum gives an overview of the history of marzipan. On request, you can have marzipan figures decorated on your personal request.
Katarina kaik is the narrowest and most medieval street in Tallinn. Round arches above the alley support the side walls. It leads to the Müürivahe street, where a market in the shadow of the city wall, gives an insight into the life behind the walls.
Through the Viru Gate from the 14th century, we leave the old town. At Viru välja, the Viru Square, we take a tram to Kadriorg.

Outside Toompea Castle in Tallinn, Estonia
According to a myth, the whole hill of Toompea was made by the Linda, who built it boulder-by-boulder with her own hands. For reasons associated with this legend, Tallinn is sometimes traditionally referred to as Lyndanisse (The nipple of Linda) in Estonian. The more prosaic truth is that settlers during the time of ancient Estonia made use of the natural hill as an easily defended stronghold. Over time, the place also developed into a commercial hub. It was probably one of the first inhabited areas of what later became Tallinn.[2]
In 1219, the castle was taken over by Danish crusaders - led by Valdemar II.[1] According to a popular Danish legend, the very first flag of Denmark (Dannebrog) fell from the sky during a critical stage of the battle (known as the Battle of Lyndanisse). This first proper castle was referred to as the Castle of the Danes, in latin Castrum Danorum and in Estonian Taanilinnus. From the latter, the modern name of the city of Tallinn is possibly derived (see Modern name of Tallinn).
In 1227, the castle was taken over by the Order of the Brethren of the Sword, who initiated rebuilding schemes. The castle they started building is to a large extent the castle that is visible today. The castle again befell the Danes just ten years later, but was sold to the Teutonic Order in 1346, and would remain in their hands for the remainder of the Middle Ages.[1]
18th century, Baroque additions to the castle
As the crusading Teutonic Order was a religious order, the castle came to resemble a monastery in several ways. It included a chapel, a chapter house and a dormitory for the knights. The order was also responsible for erecting the still visible towers of the church, including Pilsticker (translated as arrow-sharpener), Stür den Kerl (ward off the enemy), Landskrone (crown of the land) and the probably most famous, Pikk Hermann, Tall Hermann.[1]
Tall Hermann is 95 metres (312 ft) tall and dominates the castle skyline. The flag of Estonia is hoisted at the top of the tower every day at sunrise, to the sound of the national anthem, and lowered at sunset.[1]
With the upheavals of the Livonian War during the 16th century, the crusader orders formerly dominating the present-day Baltic states were dissolved and the region became contested by Sweden, Poland and Russia. By 1561, northern Estonia had become a Swedish dominion. The Swedes transformed the castle from a crusaders' fortress into a ceremonial and administrative centre of political power in Estonia, a purpose the castle has served ever since.[1]

Originally established by Danes in the 13th century, it is the oldest church in Tallinn and mainland Estonia. It is also the only building in Toompea which survived a 17th-century fire.

Toompea Castle
Toompea has been the centre of power in Estonia for 800 years. In the course of times, vice-regents of Denmark, commanders of the Livonian Order and the Swedish and Russian governors have ruled the territories of Estonia from here. In the first decades of the Republic of Estonia, Toompea Castle was also the residence of the state elders, and for a long time the Government of the Republic of Estonia worked here together with the parliament – the Riigikogu. At present Toompea Castle is occupied by the Riigikogu. In the course of centuries, Toompea Castle has turned from a medieval fortress into a modern centre of government. Besides the 101 members of the Riigikogu, about 250 officials of the Chancellery of the Riigikogu work here.

RIIGIKOGU | Parliament of Estonia | Toompea Castle | Tallinn
Riigikogu is the unicameral parliament of Estonia. All important state-related questions pass through the Riigikogu. Following the Estonian Declaration of Independence in 1918, a building to house the parliament of the republic was erected at the site of the former convent building of the Teutonic Order. Taking two years to complete, it was finished in 1922, and designed by architects Eugen Habermann and Herbert Johanson. Although its exterior is traditionalist, the interior is Expressionist in style - the world's only Expressionist parliament building. Since 1922, the sessions of the Riigikogu have taken place in the Toompea castle.
