Statue of Liberty , New York City (Share Your Thoughts on 125th Birthday!)
Statue of Liberty celebrates its 125th birthday this week! Share your thoughts on this momentous occasion.
In the waters of New York City, the Statue of Liberty is probably the single most iconic landmark in all of the United States.
Known as Lady Liberty, this massive statue has appeared in countless movies, television shows, pictures, and even a few songs.
It was originally a present from the French in 1886, designed by the architect Frederic Bartholdi as a symbol of freedom.
The statue is made of copper and, although it originally had the orange color of the metal, it developed a green patina long ago.
The Statue of Liberty is designed after the Roman goddess of freedom, with a torch of liberty and a book of the law.
For decades, immigrants coming to New York first passed by the statue before reaching the city marking this as a historical landmark and much visited attraction.

A quick tour around the room I stayed in whilst in New York City
The Empire State Building
Recorded September 14, 2008.
The Empire State Building is a 102-story Art Deco skyscraper in New York City at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York. It stood as the world's tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center's North Tower was completed in 1972. Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building once again became the tallest building in New York City and New York State. The Empire State Building is the second tallest skyscraper in the Americas (surpassed only by the Sears Tower) and the 9th tallest in the World. It is also the 4th tallest freestanding structure in the Americas and the 12th tallest in the world. In 1964, floodlights were added to illuminate the top of the building at night, in colors chosen to match seasonal and other events, such as St. Patrick's Day and Christmas. The floodlights bathed the building in red, white, and blue for several months after the destruction of the World Trade Center. The Empire State Building has one of the most popular outdoor observatories in the world, having been visited by over 110 million people. The 86th-floor observation deck offers impressive 360-degree views of the city. There is a second observation deck on the 102nd floor that is open to the public. It is completely enclosed and much smaller than the first one.

As host of the United Nations Headquarters, it is also an important center for international affairs. The city is often referred to as New York City or the City of New York, to distinguish it from the state of New York, of which it is a part. Located on a large natural harbor on the Atlantic coast of the Northeastern United States, New York City consists of five boroughs: The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island. With a population of 8.4 million distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. New York traces its roots to the 1624 founding of New Amsterdam as a trading post by Dutch colonists. The city and its surrounds came under English control in 1664, and was renamed New York after King Charles II of England granted the lands to his brother, the Duke of York. New York served as the capital of the United States from 1785 until 1790. It has been the country's largest city since 1790. Many districts and landmarks in New York City have become well known to outsiders. The Statue of Liberty greeted millions of immigrants as they came to America by ship in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Times Square, iconified as The Crossroads of the World, is the brightly illuminated hub of the Broadway theater district, one of the world's busiest pedestrian intersections, and a major center of the world's entertainment industry. New York City's financial district, anchored by Wall Street in Lower Manhattan, vies with London as the financial capital of the world and is home to the New York Stock Exchange, the world's largest stock exchange by total market capitalization of its listed companies. Manhattan's real estate market has become well known to the world as one of the most prized and expensive in the world.[18] Manhattan's Chinatown incorporates one of the highest concentrations of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. Numerous colleges and universities are located in New York, including Columbia University, New York University and Rockefeller University, which are ranked among the top 100 in the world.
