VENICE: Torcello island [HD]
Torcello is a quiet and sparsely populated island at the Venetian Lagoon. It is the oldest continuously populated region of Venice, and once held the largest population of the Republic of Venice.
After the downfall of the Roman Empire, Torcello was one of the first lagoon islands to be successively populated by those Veneti who fled the mainland to take shelter from the recurring barbarian invasions.
Torcello rapidly grew in importance as a political and trading centre: In the 10th century it had a population of at least 10,000 people and was much more powerful than Venice. Thanks to the lagoon's salt marshes, the salines became Torcello's economic backbone and its harbour developed quickly into an important re-export market in the profitable east-west-trade.
The lagoon around the island of Torcello gradually became a swamp from the 12th century onwards and Torcello's heyday came to an end: Navigation in the laguna morta (dead lagoon) was impossible before long and the growing swamps seriously aggravated the malaria situation, so that the population eventually abandoned the island and left for Murano, Burano or Venice. It now has a population of around 20 people.
The former splendour of Torcello's numerous palazzi, its twelve parishes and its sixteen cloisters has almost disappeared since the Venetians recycled the useful building material. The only remaining medieval buildings form an ensemble of 4 edifices.
(1) Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
It is a notable example of Venetian-Byzantine architecture, one of the most ancient religious edifices in the Veneto. The campanile is closed since 2010 due to instability, and covered in scaffolding.
(2) Church of Santa Fosca
(3 & 4) Museo Provinciale di Torcello, housed in two fourteenth century palaces: the Medieval and Modern Section housed in the Palazzo del Consiglio, and the Archaeological Section housed in the Palazzo dell'Archivio

VENICE: EXPLORING isolated island of TORCELLO, the smallest in the VENETIAN LAGOON ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit Torcello which is a sparsely populated island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon, in north-eastern Italy. It was first settled in the year 452 and has been referred to as the parent island from which Venice was populated. It was a town with a cathedral and bishops before St Mark's Basilica was built.
Venice, the capital of northern Italy’s Veneto region, is built on more than 100 small islands in a lagoon in the Adriatic Sea. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs.

Burano, Murano, Torcello 3 Island Tour
We made a full day of exploring the 3 islands in the Venetian lagoon near Venice.
First, we bought an un limited water bus day pass for 20 euro per person. This allowed us to use the water buses free all day long as many times as we wanted. Otherwise yo have to pay 7.5 euro per one way, per person.
Of the 3 islands, Murano is the busiest, Murano second and Torcello is the quietest and smallest.
The water bus (boats) run fairly often and get crowded so make sure to appropriately time your journey if you are short on time or take your time and simply explore.
Don't confuse the water bus with the water taxi. Water taxi are in fact, a taxi service and cost a lot more.
Most people go straight to Murano as it is a shorter ride and spend about an hour enjoying the glass shops that are famous for their Murano glass.
Next, it's easy to visit Burano as it is s short journey by water bus and that is where you find all the colorful houses. I suggest to simply get lost and enjoy the colorful houses.
Lastly, Torcello, the smallest island is just a short boat ride away and is the quietest and smallest of the three. You need only 1 hour or less to explore.
You can take the water bus directly back to several major stops in Venice including San Marco Square and Piazzale Roma.
You'll catch the airport transfer from Piazzale Roma.
You can also store luggage at the central train station in Venice island.

Torcello Island - Venice (Italy)
Torcello is an island located north of the Venetian Lagoon. It is considered the region of Venice continuously inhabited the longest.
The main attraction of the island is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 639 and with many Byzantine works from the 11th and 12th centuries, including mosaics.

Places to see in ( Venice - Italy ) Torcello Island
Tiny Torcello island has few residents but it's often busy with sightseers in summer. They come to visit the Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta, with its Venetian-Byzantine mosaics and views of nearby Burano from the bell tower, or to check out the Ponte del Diavolo, a bridge with no parapets, and the stone seat known as Trono di Attila. A handful of eateries along the main canal serve lunch.
Torcello island at the northern end of the Venetian Lagoon, in north-eastern Italy. It was first settled in the year 452 and has been referred to as the parent island from which Venice was populated. It was a town with a cathedral and bishops before St Mark's Basilica was built.
Torcello benefited from and maintained close cultural and trading ties with Constantinople: however, being a rather distant outpost of the Eastern Roman Empire, it could establish de facto autonomy from the eastern capital. Torcello rapidly grew in importance as a political and trading centre: in the 10th century it had a population often estimated at 10,000-35,000 people, with 20,000 the most commonly cited estimate.
In pre-Medieval times, Torcello was much a more powerful trading center than Venice. Thanks to the lagoon’s salt marshes, the salines became Torcello’s economic backbone and its harbour developed quickly into an important re-export market in the profitable east-west-trade, which was largely controlled by Byzantium during that period.
Torcello's numerous palazzi, its twelve parishes and its sixteen cloisters have almost disappeared since the Venetians recycled the useful building material. One small palazzo is the only remaining medieval structure, consisting of a cathedral, a church, the town's former council chamber and archives (which house the museum), and the nearby basilica and campanile; the latter two were rebuilt in the year 1008.
Today's main attraction is the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, founded in 639. It is of basilica-form with side aisles but no crossing, and has much 11th and 12th century Byzantine work, including mosaics (e.g. a vivid version of the Last Judgement). Other attractions include the 11th and 12th century Church of Santa Fosca, in the form of a Greek cross, which is surrounded by a semi-octagonal porticus, and the Museo Provinciale di Torcello housed in two fourteenth century palaces, the Palazzo dell'Archivio and the Palazzo del Consiglio, which was once the seat of the communal government.
Another noteworthy sight for tourists is an ancient stone chair, known as Attila’s Throne. It has, however, nothing to do with the king of the Huns, but may have been the podestà’s or the bishop’s chair. or the seat where chief magistrates were inaugurted. Torcello is also home to a Devil's Bridge, known as the Ponte del Diavolo or alternatively the Ponticello del Diavolo (devil's little bridge).
( Venice - Italy ) is well know as a tourist destination because of the variety of places you can enjoy while you are visiting Venice . Through a series of videos we will try to show you recommended places to visit in Venice - Italy

Murano, Burano, Torchello: Venice & the Lagoon Islands - Italy Day 4
We explored the Islands of the Venetian Lagoon: Murano, Burano and Torcello, then returned to Venice for a gondola ride at dusk around the narrow canals. We saw glass making in Murano, enjoyed colorful buildings and crepes in Burano, and visited the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and gardens in Torcello. Day 4 of our 12 day tour across northern and central Italy.

Exploring Torcello Island in Italy (A day trip from Venice)
Torcello Island is a beautiful place to visit and you should not skip it if you plan to visit Venice. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta (Torcello Cathedral) is a notable example of Venetian-Byzantine architecture. The church is about an 8-minute walk from Torcello Water Bus Station. It is possible to visit Torcello, Burano, and Murano on the same day as a day trip from Venice if you start your day early from Venice.
It is cheaper to buy an ACTV day pass that covers all water bus trips in Venice including land bus transportation if you happen to stay in Venice Mestre.

Italy, Venice - Torcello Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta
Photographer:Samuel Magal (samuel@sites-and-photos.com)
The original church is believed to have had a nave with one aisle on each side and a single apse on the eastern wall of the cathedral. It's difficult to tell what the original church was like because very little of it survived the subsequent renovations. Much of the plan of the original church survives as its present form is very similar to the original but the only physical parts that survive are the central apse wall and part of the baptistery that survives as part of the façade of the current church.
The first of two major renovations occurred in 864 under the direction of Bishop Adeodatus II.[1] In this renovation, the two aisle apses that appear today were built. Also, the synthronon that fills the central apse was created and the crypt was placed under it. After this renovation, the cathedral would have resembled the current cathedral more than the original church would have but it is not until after the second and final major renovation that the cathedral appears very similar to its current design.
The beautiful MURANO and BURANO
MURANO and BURANO, one of the most beautiful places to visit in Venice! Check this islands if you're around Venice, Italy.
Check out my previous Vlog where I explore Venice for the first time:
On my previouse Vlog I was with my colleague Amber exploring the city center of Venice and we were amazed on how beautiful it was.
We saw the most famous places of the city like Rialto Bridge, St. Mark's Square, Bridge of Sights.
We also walked around the city center through those narrow streets and small bridges, I have to advise you to really use Google Maps in order not to get lost, it is so easy to get lost here in Venice, Italy.
This time I was with my girlfriend Ines and we went to explore the islands of Murano and Burano. They are beautiful and very colorful, they used to be fisherman islands and now are very touristic places.
When we got to Murano we were supposed to go to the glass factory but it was closed alredy that is why I'm not showing it on the video, sorry for that. Next time I go there I'll go there earlier so I can show you them making glass.
Hit me up in the comments for any questions!

BURANO island - Venice, Italy (HD1080p)
*** BURANO is an island in the Venetian Lagoon, northern ITALY; like VENICE itself, it could more correctly be called an archipelago of four islands linked by bridges. It is situated near TORCELLO at the northern end of the Lagoon, and is known for its lace work and brightly coloured homes. The primary economy today is tourism as visitors arrive for sightseeing and to purchase lace goods. ***

Venice and Its Lagoon
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | Venice, more than any other European city, has an endlessly seductive charm. For centuries, it was nicknamed La Serenissima, The Most Serenely Beautiful One— and for good reason. Along with sampling the sumptuous art treasures of Venice and exploring its back-street wonders, we'll cruise its lagoon, stopping in fiery Murano for glass, pastel Burano for lace, and murky Torcello for a sense of where Venice was born.
