TORHOUSE
WIGTOWN
DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY
SCOTLAND
TORHOUSE IS ONE OF THE BEST PRESERVED STONE CIRCLES IN THE UK. THE RING IS THREE MILES WEST OF WIGTOWN, ON THE B733 ROAD. THE SITE IS IN THE CARE OF HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SCOTLAND. IN 2000BC, OUR BRONZE AGE ANCESTORS ERECTED THIS CIRCLE WHICH IS A FASCINATING AND PRISTINE RELIC, LEFT BEHIND FROM DEEP ANTIQUITY.
THE CIRCLE IS COMPLETE WITH NINETEEN BOULDERS. THE RING ENCLOSES A THREE STONE SETTING. THE NINETEEN MEGALITHS MAY REPRESENT THE 18.6 YEAR LUNAR CYCLE. A STONE AT THE WEST ARC LOOKS SLICED, AS IF TO REPRESENT THE 0.6. A FEW OTHER EXAMPLES OF NINETEEN STONE RINGS ARE MERRY MAIDENS & BOSCAWEN-UN IN CORNWALL.
THE GRANITE BOULDERS MAKE UP A 20M DIAMETER RING. THEY SIT ON A SLIGHTLY RAISED PLATFORM. THE BRONZE AGE PEOPLE, INTENTIONALLY FLATTENED THE SOUTH EAST ARC, THIS AREA CONTAINS THE BIGGEST STONES, THE HIGHEST BEING ROUGHLY 1.4M.
THE SMALLEST STONES ARE IN THE WEST ARC WHERE THEY ARE CLOSER TOGETHER. THEY DECREASE IN HEIGHT TO ABOUT 0.6M. THE STONE EAST OF NORTH SEEMS TO BE A SEAT WHICH CAN BE COMFORTABLY SAT ON. PERHAPS A SHAMAN-ASTRONOMER PRIESTESS TYPE PERSON SAT HERE TO WITNESS AN IMPORTANT CELESTIAL EVENT.
INSIDE, IS A THREE STONE SETTING. THE ROW IS SET OUT ON A NORTH-EAST/SOUTH- WEST ALIGNMENT. NORTH EAST IS SUMMER SOLSTICE SUNRISE. THE SOUTH WEST ORIENTATION IS WINTER SOLSTICE SUNSET. HERE WE HAVE TWO OPPOSITE SOLSTICE SUNRISE AND SUNSET EVENTS.
THE MIDDLE STONE AT 0.65M HIGH IS THE SMALLEST BOUDER. THIS MEGALITH IS ON THE NORTH-SOUTH AXIS. THE TWO TALLER STONES ARE OVER 1M HIGH. THIS UNUSUAL CENTRAL SETTING WAS CALLED KING GAULDUS’S TOMB BY ANDREW SYMSON, MINISTER OF KIRKINNER IN 1684.
SCOTTISH ARCHAEOASTRONOMER ALEXANDER THOM VISITED TORHOUSE. HE CALCULATED THE SITE AS A ‘TYPE A FLATTENED CIRCLE’. ANOTHER EXAMPLE IS CALLANISH 111. ‘A TYPE A FLATTENED CIRCLE’ INCORPORATES THE VESICA PISCIS IN ITS DESIGN LAYOUT. TWO CIRCLES THE SAME SIZE ARE SLIGHTLY OVERLAPPED TO CREATE AN ALMOND SHAPE.
130M NORTH EAST OF THE CIRCLE AND ACROSS THE ROAD ARE THREE OUTLINER STONES. THIS STONE ROW ARRANGEMENT IS ROUGHLY IN A NORTH EAST TO SOUTH WEST ORIENTATION.
IN DECEMBER 1994 THE CENTRAL STONE FELL. IN JULY 1995 THE BOULDER WAS RE-ERECTED. BEFORE RE-ERECTON, THE SOCKET WAS EXAMINED AND FOUND THE BOULDER SITTING IN A CIRCULAR SHALLOW PIT. A STEEP OVAL SIDED FEATURE WAS FOUND, THIS MAY INDICATE A TIMBER PHASE PRE-DATING THE STONE SETTING.
THERE IS A POSSIBLE RING CAIRN IN THE CENTRE, WHICH ENCOMPASSES THE THREE STONE ARRANGEMENT. THIS MAY BE THE REMAINS OF 19TH CENTURY FIELD CLEARANCE. TORHOUSE HAS NEVER BEEN EXCAVATED.
A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.

DUMFRIES & GALLOWAY
SCOTLAND
JUST SOUTH OF ESKDALEMUIR ON THE B709 ROAD IS THE LOUPIN STANES STONE CIRCLE. SITUATED BESIDE THE WHITE ESK RIVER AND A SHORT DISTANCE FROM THE SAMYE-LING TIBETAN CENTRE. HERE YOU WILL FIND TWO STONE CIRCLES 550 METERS FROM EACH OTHER. THESE ANCIENT RINGS DATE FROM 4500 YEARS AGO.
THE SECOND CIRCLE ‘THE GIRDLE STANES’ MAY HAVE BEEN LINKED WITH THE LOUPIN RING BY A STONE AVENUE. ERATIC BOULDERS CAN BE SEEN LAYING BETWEEN THE CIRCLES. THE WORD ‘LOUPIN’ IS A SCOTTISH WORD MEANING ‘TO JUMP OVER’. STANES IS SCOTTISH FOR STONES.
GARY BILTCLIFFE AND CAROLINE HOARE, FOUND A FEMALE DRAGON CURRENT ‘ELEN’, WHICH FLOWS THROUGH THE LOUPIN STANES, GIRDLE STANES AND THE CLOSE BY SAMYE LING CENTRE. MORE INFORMATION CAN BE FOUND IN THERE EXCELLENT BOOK ‘THE SPINE OF ALBION’.
THE LANDSCAPE AROUND THE LOUPIN STANES IS RICH IN PREHISTORIC SITES. THE AREA HAS AN ARCHAEOLOGICAL TRAIL WITH SETTLEMENTS, FORTS AND KING SCHAW’S GRAVE. PROFESSOR ALEXANDER THOM MEASURED THE LOUPIN STANES AND FOUND A ‘TYPE A FLATTENED CIRCLE’, THIS IS FLATTENED ON THE WEST ARC.
THE PROMINENT FEATURE HERE IS TWO LARGE ENTRANCE STONES, ROUGHLY 1.5 METERS HIGH ON A WSW ORIENTATION. A FURTHER TEN SMALLER AND UNEVENLY SPACED BOULDERS MAKES UP A RING OF TWELVE STONES. PERHAPS OUR ANCESTORS USED THE NUMBER TWELVE AS SYMBOLIC OF THE SOLAR YEAR.
PERHAPS THE LOUPIN STANES IS THE MALE SITE WITH THE PHALIC LIKE PORTAL STONES AND SOLAR NUMBER. COULD THE GIRDLE STANES BE THE FEMALE CIRCLE WITH ITS MOON CRESCENT SHAPE AND CLOSE CONNECTION WITH THE WATER OF THE WHITE ESK RIVER?
A FEW THEORIES FOR THE FUNCTION OF THE SITE IS A CELESTIAL OBSERVATORY. AN ARENA FOR IMPORTANT LIFE EVENTS AS BIRTH, COMING OF AGE, MARRIAGE AND DEATH CEREMONIES. IMPORTANT CELTIC FESTIVALS LIKE SOLSTICES AND EQUINOXES COULD HAVE BEEN CELEBRATED HERE.
AUBRY BURL STATED BETWEEN THE PILLARS APPEARED TO INDICATE SUNSET IN EARLY NOVEMBER OR LATE JANUARY WHICH WOULD BE THE CELTIC FESTIVALS OF SAMHAIN AND IMBOLC.
A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.
Breemie Stone Circle Winter Solstice Gathering 2005 Chapter 12
This event took place celebrating the ancient days of the Winter Solstice Celebration(the longest night and shortest day, when the light of our world is the furthest away from us, internally and externally) in NE Scotland inside the Breemie Recumbent Stone Circle. This has probably not been experienced in the last 5000 years by people in the NE of Scotland and NEVER before by a multi cultural society in our world. The event was attended by 100 people. It followed one mans dream from the Great Spirit...to bring the People back to the Old Ways of the Land and the Great Mother herself.Om Shanti!

INTRO
OLD BOURTREEBUSH IS THOUGHT TO BE A STONE CIRCLE, WITH NO RECUMBENT SETTING. IT IS SITUATED TO THE WEST OF PORTLETHEN & 500M SE OF AQUHORTHIES RECUMBENT STONE CIRCLE. OLD BOURTREEBUSH IS A VERY RUINOUS SITE WHICH LIES IN PRIVATE LAND. OUR PREDECESSORS FROM THE NEOLITHIC ERA (NEW STONE AGE) HAVE LEFT US WITH AN UNUSUAL RING FOR NE SCOTLAND.
OVERVIEW
THE STONE CIRCLE ENCLOSES A CAIRN WHICH MIGHT BE A RING CAIRN. THE SPACING OF THE REMAINING STONES, SUGGESTS AROUND FIFTEEN UPRIGHTS. SOME OF THESE MISSING STONES MIGHT BE WAITING TO BE EXCAVATED.
RING
THE RING IS 26M IN DIAMETER. THE TALLEST STONE IS IN THE SW AT 2.9M & IS PINK GRANITE. THE SMALLEST STONE IS 1.2M HIGH ON THE ENE. THERE ARE THREE PROSTATE STONES, FOUR UPRIGHTS, WITH A POSSIBLE FIFTH STUMP STONE IN THE NORTH. THE STONES REDUCE IN HEIGHT FROM THE SW TO ENE. ALL THE MEGALITHS ARE POINTED AT THE TOP EXCEPT THE SOUTHERN MOST UPRIGHT.
THE INTERIOR HAS LOST ITS KERBED CAIRN. THE INSIDE OF THE CIRCLE IS SCATTERED WITH FIELD CLEARANCE STONE. THE SITE HAS BEEN BADLY INTERFERED WITH BY EXCAVATION WORK.
RECUMBENT
ALTHOUGH OLD BOURTREEBUSH IS NOT THOUGHT TO BE A RECUMBENT CIRCLE. THERE IS A 3.5M LONG MEGALITH THAT RESEMBLES A RECUMBENT. THIS MEGALITH IS EMBEDDED INTO THE CAIRNS MATERIAL, WHICH ENCLOSES THE CIRCLE. THE STONE LIES IN THE EAST SECTION, WHICH IS A VERY UNUSUAL LOCATION FOR A RECUMBENT. MOST RECUMBENT MEGALITHS ARE ON THE SW TO S ARC WITH SOME ON THE SE. THIS PROSTATE MEGALITH IS PROBABLY A FALLEN STANDING STONE.
FLANKERS
THERE ARE TWO STANDING STONES AT THE S & SW. THESE TWO UPRIGHTS MAY HAVE BEEN THE FLANKERS, IF THERE WAS A RECUMBENT SETTING. HOWEVER THEY ARE AROUND 8M APART. THE SW STONE IS THE HIGHEST IN THE RING WHICH IS A COMMON THEME THROUGH OUT THE ABERDEENSHIRE CIRCLES.
OTHER INFO
THE SOUTHERN MOST MEGALITH, BEARS ONE CUP MARK, AT 1M ABOVE GROUND LEVEL & SLIGHTLY OFF CENTRE. THE SITE WAS EXCAVATED IN 1858 BY ALEXANDER THOMPSON.

Torhouse Stone Circle on the Summer Solstice 2014
A quick time lapse of Torhouse standing stones on the summer solstice 2014. Not the best effort as the camera did not auto expose. In the middle of the stone circle are three stones which point towards Cainsmore of fleet. The sun rise is directly inline with the three stones mentioned. Not bad for a Druid Circle which is from the Bronze age!
Tregeseal East Stone Circle
Tregeseal East Stone Circle (commonly known as Tregeseal Stone Circle as not a lot of the West circle is left) is a stone circle on the moors at Lower Bostraze near the town of St Just-in-Penwith. It is the first, last and most westerly stone circle in Britain and is named after the nearest main village, Tregeseal. The circle consists of 19 granite stones, all of them around 4ft high however it is thought that 2 stones are missing meaning that the circle originally consisted of 21 stones. The circle dates from late Neolithic to early Bronze Age and was part of a large ritual area. There are many ancient sites around the stone circle including Tregeseal West Stone Circle (damaged), Tregseal Holed Stones, Boswens Menhir and also the holy Carn Kenidjack which can be seen in the background. Dowsing has found that the stones are on top of an underground stream which leads to the middle of the circle. Geiger sessions and compass sessions have found no significant abnormal radiation or compass deflects. Tregeseal Stone Circle is also known as The Dancing Stones.

INTRO
A FEW MILES NORTH OF LOCHGILPHEAD AND VISIBLE FROM THE A816 ROAD IS THE BALLYMEANOCH STANDING STONES. THESE BEAUTIFUL MEGALITHS ARE A VERY IMPORTANT JEWEL IN KILMARTIN’S PREHISTORIC CROWN. SITUATED IN THE HEART OF AN ANCIENT CEREMONIAL LANDSCAPE, THIS AREA WAS SO IMPORTANT TO THE PREHISTORIC PEOPLE IN THE KILMARTIN ENVIRONS AND BEYOND.
AT BALLYMEANOCH WE HAVE SIX STANDING STONES, DIVIDED INTO A ROW OF TWO AND A ROW OF FOUR, 40M APART. THESE ROWS ARE ORIENTATED TOWARDS KEY LUNAR AND SOLAR EVENTS. TESTAMENT TO THE KNOWLEDGE OF COSMIC RHYTHMS HELD BY OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.
IT IS POSSIBLE THE STANDING STONES STOOD AT THE END OF A PROCESSIONAL AVENUE WHICH APPROACHED FROM THE SOUTH EAST.
TWO STONES & HOLED STONE.
THIS TWO STONE ROW IS IN LINE TO THE MIDSUMMER MOST SOUTHERNLY MOON RISE. THE TALLEST STONE ON THE SOUTH ARC IS 3M HIGH WHILE THE ADJACENT NORTH MEGALITH IS 2.7M HIGH.
A HOLED STONE ONCE STOOD TO THE EAST, IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY. IN 1943 A STORM CAUSED THIS MEGALITH TO FALL, IT NOW LIES BESIDE THE NEARBY KERB CAIRN. THE BASE WAS REMOVED AND EXCAVATED IN 1977.
BENETH THE STONE WAS THREE PORTIONS OF HUMAN CREMATED BONE, RADIOCARBON DATED TO BETWEEN 3370-3050 YEARS AGO. THE CREMATION LAY IN A PIT THAT SUPPORTED THE MEGALITH.
LOCAL TRADITION HAD THESE HOLED STONES AS A WAY TO SEAL DEALS OR A PROMISE TO MARRIAGE. ANOTHER EXAMPLE OF A HOLED STONE CAN BE FOUND NEAR TORHOUSE STONE CIRCLE IN DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY.
FOUR STONES
OUR ANCESTORS ALIGNED THE FOUR STONE ROW TO THE WINTER SOLSTICE SUNRISE. THIS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT SOLAR EVENT FALLS ON DECEMBER 21ST OR 22ND. THE EAST FACE OF THE TWO MIDDLE STONES ARE HEAVILY CUP MARKED. THESE MEGALITHS MAY HAVE COME FROM A MUCH EARLIER DECORATED OUTCROP LIKE ACHNABRECK, THEN TRANSPORTED HERE AS BELIEFS CHANGED OVER TIME.
THE FOUR STONE SETTING, RISES IN HEIGHT FROM THE SOUTH EAST TO NORTH EAST. THE HIGHEST MEGALITH IN THE SOUTH IS JUST OVER 4M HIGH WITH THE SMALLEST IN THE NORTH ARC BEING 2.75M. NOTICE HOW THE FOUR STONES RISE IN HEIGHT LIKE THE HILL IN THE BACKGROUND.
OTHER INFO
A SHORT WALK FROM THE STONES WILL TAKE YOU TO A HENGE, A KERBED CAIRN, A CHAMBERED CAIRN AND ROCK ART. THE SITES IN THIS LOCATION ARE BETWEEN 4200-3200 YEARS OLD MAKING THESE CONSTRUCTS, NEOLITHIC AND BRONZE AGE. THE NAME BALLYMEANOCH TRANSLATES FROM SCOTS GAELIC AS ‘MIDDLE SETTLEMENT’.
A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.

INTRO
3.5 MILES SW OF MINTLAW & BETWEEN THE VILLAGES OF MAUD & OLD DEER IS AIKEY BRAE RECUMBENT STONE CIRCLE. BUILT BY PEOPLE FROM THE 3RD MILLENNIUM BC. THIS IS A MUST VISIT SITE IN THE BUCHAN REGION OF NORTH ABERDEENSHIRE.
THE CIRCLE IS IN STATE CARE & OWNED BY ABERDEENSHIRE COUNCIL. AIKEY BRAE SITS ON TOP OF PARKHOUSE HILL. THERE ARE OPEN VIEWS TO THE SOUTH, HOWEVER THE REST OF THE LANDSCAPE IS OBSCURED BY TREES.
MOVING & ERECTING THESE MONOLITHS WAS A MONUMENTAL PROJECT FOR OUR ANCESTORS FROM PREHISTORY. THERE ARE ROUGHLY 100 RECUMBENT STONE CIRCLES IN NE SCOTLAND.
OVERVIEW
AN ESTIMATED 10 STONES WOULD HAVE ORIGINALLY COMPLETED THE CIRCLE, NOW 5 MEGALITHS REMAIN IN SITU. THE RING IS BUILT INTO A CIRCULAR BANK WITH OUTER & INNER KERB STONES AT ITS BASE. THIS STRUCTURE IS MADE OF SMALL STONES & EARTH. IT IS ROUGHLY 2M WIDE X 0.75M HIGH & A DIAMETER OF 14.5M.
RECUMBENT
A HUGE 21.5 TON RECUMBENT STONE SURVIVES. IT IS ORIENTATED SSW & RESEMBLES A MALE PHALIC STONE. THIS MEGALITH IS AROUND 4.5M LONG X 1.7M HIGH & HELD IN PLACE BY 3 STONE AT ITS BASE.
THE RECUMBENT & WESTERN FLANKER IS MADE OF WHINSTONE, ALL OTHER STONES ARE LOCAL GRANITE. THE TOP SURFACE OF THE RECUMBENT IS RELATIVELY LEVEL HOWEVER IT RISES SLIGHTLY TOWARDS THE WEST END.
FLANKERS
THE 2 FLANKERS SURVIVE HOWEVER ONLY THE EAST FLANK IS UPRIGHT, IT IS JUST OVER 2M HIGH. THE WEST FLANKER IS LAYING PROSTATE, IT HAS FALLEN BACK & LIES OVER THE BANK. AN 1881 ACCOUNT NOTED THE E FLANK WAS ALSO PROSTATE WHICH SUGGESTS RE-ERECTION. THE FLANKERS ARE THE CIRCLES TALLEST STONES.
RING
THE SW TO NW ARC CONTAINS ALL 3 REMAINING UPRIGHTS, THESE 3 MONOLITHS SEEM TO BE MALE. THE STONE IN THE SW POSITION (NEAREST THE RECUMBENT) IS NO DOUBT A MALE PHALUS. IT LOOKS LIKE THE STONE HAS BEEN SHAPED OR MOULDED TO EMPHASISE THE MALE FEATURE. THESE W ARC STONES ARE GRADED IN HEIGHT & REDUCE IN SIZE FROM AROUND 2M TO 1.6M IN A S TO N DIRECTION.
IN THE SE TO N ARC ALL THE STONES ARE PROSTATE. THE MEGALITH NEAREST THE N POSITION LIES FALLEN INSIDE THE CIRCLE. THE OVAL SHAPED FEATURELESS INTERIOR OF THE RING IS SHAPED LIKE A DISH. OTHER SITES WITH MALE STONES CAN BE SEEN AT MIDMAR KIRK & WHITEHILLS.
BANK
READING UNIVERSITY EXAMINED THE RING BANK IN 2001 & CONCLUDED IT WAS ERECTED BEFORE THE STONE CIRCLE. THE BANK FEATURE IS PARTICULAR FOR THE BUCHAN AREA. OVER 45 KERB STONES REMAIN IN POSITION & ALTERNATE BETWEEN WHITE & RED COLOURS. MORE KERB STONES LIE OUT OF THEIR ORIGINAL POSITION.
OTHER INFO
THE FIRST RECORD OF AIKEY BRAE WAS IN 1780 BY LACHLAN SHAW. CHARLES ELPHINSTONE DALRYMPLE EXCAVATED EXTENSIVELY IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY, HOWEVER THE INNER CIRCLE REVEALED VERY LITTLE.
THE 2001 EXCAVATION UNEARTHED SOME FLAKED QUARTZ & BROKEN WORKED FLINTS. AIKEY BRAE IS THE ONLY RECUMBENT CIRCLE TO HAVE NO CREMATED BONE FOUND. AUBREY BURL SAID THE SITE WAS ALIGNED WITH THE MAJOR SOUTHERN MOONSET.
THESE FASCINATING RECUMBENT CIRCLES ARE A SET IN STONE REMINDER FROM OUR ANCESTORS OF A REMOTE PAST. WHEN STUDYING & RESEARCHING THESE ENIGMATIC SITES WE MAY LEARN THINGS FROM PREHISTORY WHICH COULD HAVE BEEN INTENTIONALLY LEFT FOR US TO DECIPHER FROM DEEP ANTIQUITY.

SCOTLAND
IN THE MACHARS, JUST TWO MILES EAST OF PORT WILLIAM AND NEAR WHITHORN IS DRUMTRODDAN STANDING STONES. A TRILOGY OF MAJESTIC MEGALITHS ONCE STOOD STILL IN A LANDSCAPE FULL OF RELICS FROM VARIOUS HISTORICAL TIMELINES.
THE MEGALITHS ARE IN THE CARE OF HISTORIC ENVIRONMENT SCOTLAND AND ARE SIGNPOSTED ON THE B7021 ROAD. THE PERIOD OF ERECTION IS UNKNOWN BUT IS LIKELY NEOLITHIC OR BRONZE AGE. MAKING THE STONES AROUND 4000-2000 YEARS BEFORE CHRIST.
ORIGINALLY THREE SPLENDID STANDING STONES STOOD STILL AT THREE METERS HIGH. THE ONE REMAINING MEGALITH LOOKS LIKE A HOODED FIGURE, MANY STONES TAKE ON THIS FORM. THE CONSTRUCTION OF THESE HUGE STONES WOULD HAVE BEEN A BIG PROJECT FOR OUR ANCESTORS. THIS MUST HAVE BEEN VERY IMPORTANT TO THEM.
ON MY FIRST VISIT IN 2006, THERE WERE TWO UPRITE STONES. SOMETIME AROUND 2010 A SECOND MEGALITH FELL (THIS IS THE STONE NEAREST THE ENTRANCE). THIS WAS NOT SURPRISING AS THE BOTTOM OF THE STONE WAS THIN AND LEANING AT AN ANGLE.
THE STONE ROW SEEMS TO BE IN A SOUTH TO SOUTH WEST LINE. WHETHER THESE STONES WERE ERECTED FOR COSMIC OBSERVATIONS IS UNKNOWN. THERE IS COMMANDING VIEWS FROM THE SITE WHICH IS A COMMON THEME WITH MEGALITHIC CONSTRUCTIONS.
THE LANDSCAPE AROUND DRUMTRODDAN IS RICH IN SITES FROM VARIOUS HISTORICAL TIMELINES. A FEW EXAMPLES ARE, THE PREHISTORIC MOUND AT DUNRAGIT, CHRISTIAN SITES, TORHOUSE STONE CIRCLE AND ROCK ART SITES.
A SECOND SITE AT DRUMTRODDAN HAS PREHISTORIC ROCK ART ON DISPLAY, JUST 400 METERS NORTH WEST. THIS CAN BE ACCESSED OFF THE B8075 ROAD WITH PARKING AT DRUMTRODDAN FARM. THIS SITE IS ALSO IN STATE CARE. THE STANDING STONES MAY BE CONTEMPORARY AND CONNECTED TO THE ROCK CARVINGS. THERE IS A SECOND PETROGLYPH SITE ABOUT A MILE TO THE EAST.
THESE BEAUTIFUL MEGALITHIC RELICS HAVE SURVIVED MILLENNIA. WHY THEY WERE ERECTED IS AN ENIGMA. THEY STILL EXSIST IN OUR PRESENT DAY AND WE CAN ENJOY VISITING THEM. OUR ANCESTORS WOULD HAVE HAVE BEEN PLEASANTLY SURPRISED, PEOPLE FROM OUR MODERN CULTURE ARE VISITING THERE SACRED SITES IN INCREASING NUMBERS.
ABIG THANK YOU TO OUR ANCIENT ANCESTORS.

INTRO
JUST OUTSIDE THE VILLAGE OF STRICHEN, IS A FINE RECONSTRUCTED, RECUMBENT STONE CIRCLE. THESE SITES ARE ABUNDANT IN THE GRAMPIAN AREA. NE SCOTLAND WAS A VERY IMPORTANT LOCATION, FOR THE NEOLITHIC CULTURE OF BRITAIN.
OVERVIEW
THE CIRCLE WAS TOPPLED IN 1830 BY THE TENNANT FARMER. HE WAS ORDERED TO RE-ERECT THIS ANCIENT CONSTRUCTION BY THE LAND OWNER. HOWEVER IT WAS NOT RE-BUILT CORRECTLY.
THE RE-BULID WAS POSITIONED SOUTH OF THE ORIGINAL LOCATION. THE RECUMBENT SETTING WAS NOW ON THE NORTH ARC. THIS RE-ERECTION WAS TAKEN DOWN IN 1965, WHERE THE MEGALITHS NOW LAY IN A HEAP TO THE SE.
RECUMBENT SETTING
THE INNER FACE OF THE RECUMBENT BEARS ONE CUP MARK. THIS MEGALITH IS OVER 2.5M LONG BY JUST OVER 1M HIGH & IS ORIENTATED SSE. THIS ORIENTATION MAY BE LINKED WITH THE SOUTHERN EXTREME MOONSET. PERHAPS THE FLANKERS & RECUMBENT ACTED AS A FRAME TO OBSERVE THIS LUNAR EVENT.
THE RECUMBENT RESEMBLES A MALE PHALUS WHEN VIEWED FROM INSIDE THE CIRCLE. THE WEST FLANKER IS SLIGHTLY SMALLER AT 1.75M & IS MORE SLENDER. THIS MAY INDICATE THE PILLAR BEING FEMALE. THE EAST FLANK IS NEARLY 2M HIGH.
RING
THE RING HAS A DIAMETER OF AROUND 15M. THE CIRCLE CONSISTS OF TEN, LOCALLY QUARRIED, GREY GRANITE STONES. SEVEN STONES MAKE UP THE RING (ONE HAS FALLEN IN THE SW ARC) & INCLUDES THE THREE STONE RECUMBENT SETTING. THESE MEGALITHS ARE GRADED IN HEIGHT FROM THE TALLEST IN THE SSE TO THE LOWEST IN THE NNW.
VARIOUS
INSIDE THE CIRCLE WAS WHAT SEEMS TO BE POSTHOLES FROM A POSSIBLE TIMBER RING OR ROUNDHOUSE. THIS CONSTRUCTION HAD AN OPENING TO THE EAST. IT IS UNKNOWN IF THIS STRUCTURE WAS PRE OR POST THE MEGALITHIC ERECTION.
EXCAVATIONS TOOK PLACE FROM 1979 TO 1982. THE 1979 DIG BY A BURL REVEALED THE CIRCLES ORIGINAL NORTH LOCATION. IN 1981 THE RING WAS RE-ERECTED AGAIN, THIS TIME IN THE CORRECT POSITION.
THE FINDS DURING THE EXCAVATIONS WERE A FEMALE CREMATION AT THE NE BANK, FLINTS, SHARDS, SEVERAL HAMMER & RUBBING STONES, A CUP & RINGED MARKED ROCK WAS BURIED IN A SMALL STONE LINED PIT, QUARTZ FLAKES WERE ALSO FOUND IN THE BANK.

GLENQUICKEN IS A BEAUTIFUL STONE CIRCLE WHICH SITS WITHIN A LANDSCAPE RICH IN PREHISTORIC SITES. OUR ANCESTORS FROM THOUSANDS OF YEARS BEFORE HISTORY WAS WRITTEN, LEFT THESE ENIGMATIC REMAINS BEFORE SCOTLAND EXISTED.
THE GIANT MASTS OF CAMBRET HILL DOMINATES THE SKYLINE. THE VILLAGE OF CREETOWN IS 2 MILES EAST OF GLENQUICKEN. THIS FASCINATING STONE CIRCLE IS A MUST VISIT SITE IN SW SCOTLAND. THE CIRCLE IS SITUATED ON PRIVATE LAND.
OVERVIEW
GLENQUICKEN IS NO DOUBT NEOLITHIC OR EARLY BRONZE AGE. I BELIEVE THAT KNOCKEANs HILL WAS IMPORTANT TO OUR ANCESTORS & THE PLACEMENT OF GLENQUICKEN RING. THE CIRCLE IS ALSO KNOW AS CAMBRET MOOR. THE CAIRNHOLY 1 & 2 MONUMENTS ARE A SHORT DISTANCE AWAY.
RING
THE RING IS JUST OVER 15M IN DIAMETER, IT CONTAINS 28 SHORT BOULDERS WITH THE HIGHEST NEARLY 1M IN THE SE ARC. THE STONES IN THE N TO E AREA ARE CLOSER TOGETHER. A GAP OF 2.6M IN THE SW ARC SUGGESTS A STONE MISSING, A WINTER SOLSTICE SUNSET ALIGNMENT OR A POSSIBLE ENTRANCE.
IF THERE WAS A BOULDER IN THIS GAP, THE 29 STONES COULD BE LINKED WITH THE 29.5 DAY SYNODIC LUNAR MONTH. IF THE 28 STONE RING WAS ORIGINAL IT MAY REPRESENT THE 27.3 DAY SIDEREAL LUNAR MONTH.
INNER ROW
GLENQUICKEN HAS A VERY PROMINENT CENTRAL GRANITE MEGALITH. AT 4 TONS & 1.8M HIGH. THIS DOMINANT UPRIGHT MAY REPRESENT AN ERECT MALE PHALUS. THIS CENTRAL STONE IS ON THE N/S AXIS OF THE CIRCLE.
FLATTENED CIRCLE
ARCHAEOASTRONOMER ALEXANDER THOM FROM AYRSHIRE VISITED GLENQUICKEN & MEASURED A ‘TYPE A FLATTENED CIRCLE’. MOST STONE RINGS ARE TRUE CIRCLES, HOWEVER THERE ARE A FEW VARIATIONS.
THE FLATTENED AREA IS IN THE NORTH ARC. THE TYPE A FLATTENED DESIGN TAKES ON THE VESICA PISCIS, CHRISTIAN SYMBOL, IN ITS DESIGN LAYOUT ( AROUND 2500 YEARS BEFORE CHRISTIANITY ).
OTHER INFO
THERE ARE A FEW COMMON THEMES WITH GLENQUICKEN & TORHOUSE STONE CIRCLE, ABOUT 10 MILES AWAY. BOTH ARE ‘TYPE A FLATTENED CIRCLES’, THE MIDDLE STONE IS ON THE N/S AXIS, THE OUTER RINGS HAVE POSSIBLE LUNAR NUMBERS & BOTH SITES ARE ROUGHLY THE SAME SIZE.
