A Toronto Symphony: Concerto for Composer and City
What does our city sound like?
This is the question that composer Tod Machover and the Toronto Symphony Orchestra will answer with the help of city residents. In partnership with TSO music director Peter Oundjian, the orchestra itself, and the celebrated MIT Media Lab, Machover is asking Torontonians to collaborate with him in writing a work for, by and about our city.

TSO celebrates what Syrians bring to Canada / TSO célèbre la contribution des Syriens au Canada
In Canada we see no contradiction in belonging to more than one nationality or culture. In fact, these shared identities are the basis for our success. We celebrate this success as we celebrate the arrival of Canada's newest residents, and their path towards becoming full members of the Canadian family.
While there has been much discussion concerning the Syrian refugee crisis, what we have missed is what these refugees bring to us and how our communities will benefit from welcoming them.
Toronto Symphony Orchestra
Kinan Azmeh, clarinet/composer

Ravel’s “Boléro” | Toronto Symphony Orchestra | TEDxToronto
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Founded in 1922, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO) is one of Canada’s most important cultural institutions, recognized internationally as an outstanding orchestra. To open TEDxToronto 2014, the TSO gave a surprise performance of Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. The snare drum sets the piece in motion; against the rhythmic foundation it taps out continuously, the main theme is first played, very quietly, by a flute, then gradually, every type of orchestral instrument joins in with the theme in turn. The ensemble steadily increases in sound and size as the piece progresses, until all members of the orchestra are playing, reaching full volume at the piece’s climax. As a musical representation of this conference’s theme, Boléro brings to mind an evolving entity of many parts working together in steady—though relentless—pursuit of a single goal.
Founded in 1922, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is one of Canada’s most important cultural institutions, recognized internationally as an outstanding orchestra. Music Director Peter Oundjian leads the TSO with a commitment to innovative programming and audience development through a broad range of performances that showcase the exceptional talents of the Orchestra along with a roster of distinguished guest artists and conductors. The TSO also serves the larger community with TSOUNDCHECK, the original under-35 ticket programme; the Toronto Symphony Youth Orchestra; and music education programmes that reach over 50,000 students each year.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
