Under Pressure: Constraints on Artistic Expression in the New Turkey
Join us for Under Pressure: Constraints on Artistic Expression in the New Turkey - a conversation with Johns Hopkins SAIS Professor Lisel Hintz and Turkish artist Sermin Ciddi.
As the world’s largest jailer of journalists, NATO ally and aspiring EU member Turkey is under intense scrutiny for its human rights violations. The discussion will turn its attention to restrictions on artistic expression and explore the constraints artists of various media face in contemporary Turkey.
About the speakers:
Sermin Ciddi is a renowned Turkish artist skilled in modern miniature (minyatur) painting, one of the highly specialized visual arts of Ottoman and Turkish culture along with calligraphy (hat) and marbling paper (ebru). Ms. Ciddi studied and worked with Turkey's premier artists at the Istanbul State Fine Arts Academy and elsewhere before joining their ranks with her first exhibition of her work in 1996. Her art has been displayed in numerous galleries and cultural centers across Turkey, including as part of the Today's Masters series displayed as part of the 2010 ßstanbul European Cultural Capital celebrations. In April 2017, Ms. Ciddi was selected to be a permanent member of the Torpedo Factory Artist Association in Alexandria, Virginia.
Dr. Lisel Hintz is Assistant Professor of International Relations and European Studies at Johns Hopkins SAIS. She is the author of a new book, Identity Politics Inside Out: National Identity Contestation and Foreign Policy in Turkey which investigates how contestation over various forms of identity spills over from domestic politics to shape, and be shaped by, foreign policy.

Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago.
Learning by listening is a great way to:
- increases imagination and understanding

- improves your own spoken accent
- learn while on the move
- reduce eye strain
