CHINA: HMS BOXER ARRIVES IN SHANGHAI
English/Nat
A British naval vessel has arrived in Shanghai for the Royal Navy's first visit to China since the 1997 return of Hong Kong to Chinese rule.
H-M-S Boxer and its crew are on an goodwill mission, having already visited Vietnam and Hong Kong.
It follows a commitment by British Prime Minister Tony Blair to strengthen ties between Britain and China after his visit to the country last October.
Judging by the fog and wet weather, it could have been a home coming.
But the busy waters of the Huangpu river in Shanghai were unfamiliar territory for British battleship H-M-S Boxer.
The type-22 frigate is the first Royal Navy ship of its kind to visit mainland China since the 1997 handover of Hong Kong.
Launched in 1981, the multi-purpose battleship carries an arsenal of weapons.
Supporting a single Lynx helicopter, the ship's armoury of torpedo tubes, Seawolf missiles and Exocets give it an anti-submarine, anti-surface vessel and air defence capacity.
But on this trip, the H-M-S Boxer's intentions are anything but hostile.
The vessel and her crew of 260 men and women are on an eight-month mission to strengthen ties between Britain and China.
They have already made goodwill visits to Hong Kong and Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.
The visit to Shanghai follows a commitment made last October by British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
Visiting China, he called for the strengthening of ties and encouraged a programme of military and ministerial exchanges.
H-M-S Boxer will stay in Shanghai for five days.
The visit will include a series of high profile exchanges with both the Chinese People's Liberation Army and city dignitaries.
Other plans include a party for local children as well as a football match between the Boxer's crew and the Chinese Army's team.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
Big privilege for us, Royal Navy ships do not visit this part of the world very often. My ship company have been therefore looking forward to arrive for some time. We are very keen to make the most of our days here alongside, to further and strengthen the join interests between our two countries and in particular our two navies.
SUPER CAPTION: Richard Ibbotson, HMS Boxer Captain
In its final two days in Shanghai, the frigate will be joined by the Royal Navy's First Sea Lord, Admiral Sir Michael Boyce.
Sadly, it will be the last voyage for the Boxer.
After Shanghai, the frigate will sail back Britain where it will be decommissioned next August.

Story: 9 Months Practicing in Poland & the Soviet Union, This is the History of Indonesia's First Submarine
Friday, 01-25-2019
TSM-The heyday of submarines was achieved by Indonesia in 1962. How come, when it will hold a military operation to seize West Irian from the Netherlands, Indonesia has 12 units of the Whiskey class submarines from the Soviet Union.
No country in the southern hemisphere has sea power the size of the Indonesian Navy at that time.
Indonesia began to own submarines, according to Laksma (Pur) RP Poernomo who was the commander of the first Indonesian submarine, RI (KRI) Tjakra-401, when on August 5, 1958 Indonesia sent 112 submarine candidates to be trained abroad .
Quoted from the book Indonesian Submarine (2008) written by Indroyono Soesilo and Budiman, all personnel departed from Ujung Pier, Surabaya with Norwegian passenger ship MV Heinrich Jessen.
Travel through the Suez Canal in Egypt then to one of the ports in Yugoslavia. At that time the entire crew had to confess that they were going to practice in Yugoslavia. Even though there just stopped for a moment, after three weeks of traveling.
From Yugoslavia, the journey continues towards Poland on a special train, crossing several eastern European countries. After traveling nonstop, they finally arrived in Poland. Lucky when it's summer.
The train stopped at a small station called Gdynia near the City of Gdansk. Before World War II, Gdansk was a city in the German region called Danzig

Command: Modern Air/Naval Operations - Yankee Team, 1966 Episode 6 - Looking for Targets
The Command Modern Air/Naval Operations WOTY playthrough of 'Yankee Team, 1966' continues! DrZaius, facing intense scrutiny from his Imperial War Cabinet (YouTube Commenters), decides that he has been immensely incompetent in his duties to protect his virtual air crews by refusing (or forgetting?) to perform any recon. This episode makes up for that failing, but the results... well, only time will tell if they make a difference in the end.

► Edited description below from the CMANO WOTY Steam Store Page:
Scream over the runways of super-hardened Iraqi airbases as your squadron sprinkles bomblets on the pavement or blows up aircraft shelters using laser-guided bombs. Turn back the Russian tide in the Ukraine. Ride the Mediterranean waves in fast Israeli attack craft, trading barrages of anti-ship missiles with Syrian ships. Stand toe-to-toe against Iran in the Persian Gulf. Wrestle the Falklands under your control. Go “Down Town” around Hanoi and spar with the deadly NV air defences. Hunt down rogue nukes in Pakistan before they fall into terrorist hands. Face off with your carrier group against India or China – from either side. Square off against the Soviet Union in the cold war confrontation, and against resurgent Russia in the new multipolar world order. Lead nuclear-powered sharks of steel against the masters of antisubmarine ops. Exchange volleys of fire in close-quarters gun duels, or obliterate the enemy with sophisticated, heavy-hitting hypersonic missiles from hundreds or thousands of miles away. Survive massive, vicious air battles. Escort vital convoys to their destination, or make a last stand against all odds. When things escalate out of control, step up to unconventional or even nuclear weapons. Play the most dangerous game of hide and seek – at sea, on land and in the air - even in near-space. Command is the next generation of air/naval wargaming.
YOU ARE IN CONTROL
Surface fleets, submarine squadrons, air wings, land-based batteries and even satellite constellations are yours to direct as you see fit – from the lowliest pirate skiff to the mightiest aircraft carrier, from propeller biplanes to supersonic stealth fighters, and from WW2-era iron bombs, torpedoes & mines and the trusty Mk1 Eyeball to ultra-modern radars with imaging capability, multi-spectral recon satellites, brilliant self-guided stand-off weapons, 200-knot supercavitating torpedoes and hypersonic anti-ship ballistic missiles. Every sensor and weapon system is modeled in meticulous detail. You are given the hardware; but you have to use it well.
THE WORLD AT YOUR FINGERTIPS
Throw your distorted flat maps away – Command uses a realistic 3D earth globe for each of its scenarios. Rotate and zoom in and out of the action, from satellite view down to the trenches and wavetops. Play scenarios or build your own on any place on earth – from classics like the Middle East, South Atlantic, North Cape and Europe to new and rising hotspots like the Arctic, the Pacific and the Indian Ocean. Use a powerful yet intuitive point-and-click mouse interface for controlling your forces and go advanced with a wide collection of hotkeys for quickly jumping around the action and issuing complex orders in the heat of the battle.
RELENTLESS REALISM
Sensors and weapons work just like in real life, with all their strengths and weaknesses. Units move, detect, fight and win or die based on what their systems can and cannot do. Electronic warfare and technological levels can tilt the balance of battle. The weather can be your best ally and your worst enemy. The terrain, both overland and undersea, can hide you from the enemy but also can block your weapons from firing. Your aircraft can choose different mission profiles and loadouts, each with its advantages and limitations, and can dash high (speed, range) or scream low (protection). Thermal layers, convergence zones, surface ducting, the deep sound channel and factors such as water temperature and terrain slope may decide the sub vs ship duel. Thick clouds or rain can render your fancy laser-guided bombs useless. Stealth may help you avoid detection, or a jamming barrage may tip the scales when you are out of options. Command’s battle environment is as unforgiving as the real thing – and as rewarding for those who understand and use it.

SUMMARY
=======
Southern Rhodesia, then a self-governing colony of the United Kingdom, entered World War II along with Britain shortly after the invasion of Poland in 1939. By the war's end, 26,121 Southern Rhodesians of all races had served in the armed forces, 8,390 of them overseas, operating in the European theatre, the Mediterranean and Middle East theatre, East Africa, Burma and elsewhere. The territory's most important contribution to the war is commonly held to be its contribution to the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS), under which 8,235 British, Commonwealth and Allied airmen were trained in Southern Rhodesian flight schools. The colony's operational casualties numbered 916 killed and 483 wounded of all races.
Southern Rhodesia had no diplomatic powers, but largely oversaw its own contributions of manpower and materiel to the war effort, being responsible for its own defence. Rhodesian officers and soldiers were distributed in small groups throughout the British and South African forces in an attempt to prevent high losses. Most of the colony's men served in Britain, East Africa and the Mediterranean, particularly at first; a more broad dispersal occurred from late 1942. Rhodesian servicemen in operational areas were mostly from the country's white minority, with the Rhodesian African Rifles—made up of black troops and white officers—providing the main exception in Burma from late 1944. Other non-white soldiers and white servicewomen served in East Africa and on the home front within Southern Rhodesia. Tens of thousands of black men were conscripted from rural communities for work, first on the aerodromes and later on white-owned farms.
World War II prompted major changes in Southern Rhodesia's financial and military policy, and accelerated the process of industrialisation. The territory's participation in the EATS brought about major economic and infrastructural developments and led to the post-war immigration of many former airmen, contributing to the growth of the white population to over double its pre-war size by 1951. The war remained prominent in the national consciousness for decades afterwards. Since the country's reconstitution as Zimbabwe in 1980, the modern government has removed many references to the World Wars, such as memorial monuments and plaques, from public view, regarding them as unwelcome vestiges of white minority rule and colonialism. Southern Rhodesia's dead of the war today have no official commemoration, either in Zimbabwe or overseas.

SUMMARY
=======
In naval terminology, a destroyer is a fast, maneuverable long-endurance warship intended to escort larger vessels in a fleet, convoy or battle group and defend them against smaller powerful short-range attackers. They were originally developed in the late 19th century as a defense against torpedo boats, and by the time of the Russo-Japanese War in 1904, these torpedo boat destroyers (TBDs) were large, swift, and powerfully armed torpedo boats designed to destroy other torpedo boats. Although the term destroyer had been used interchangeably with TBD and torpedo boat destroyer by navies since 1892, the term torpedo boat destroyer had been generally shortened to simply destroyer by nearly all navies by the First World War.Before World War II destroyers were light vessels with little endurance for unattended ocean operations; typically a number of destroyers and a single destroyer tender operated together. After the war, the advent of the guided missile allowed destroyers to take on the surface combatant roles previously filled by battleships and cruisers. This resulted in larger and more powerful guided missile destroyers more capable of independent operation.
At the start of the 21st century, destroyers are the global standard for surface combatant ships, with only two nations (United States and Russia) operating the heavier class cruisers, with no battleships or true battlecruisers remaining. Modern guided missile destroyers are equivalent in tonnage but vastly superior in firepower to cruisers of the World War II era, and are capable of carrying nuclear tipped cruise missiles. At 510 feet (160 m) long, a displacement of 9200 tons, and with armament of more than 90 missiles, guided missile destroyers such as the Arleigh Burke-class are actually larger and more heavily armed than most previous ships classified as guided missile cruisers.
Some European navies, such as the French, Spanish, or German, use the term frigate for their destroyers, which leads to some confusion.
