Places to see in ( Formentera - Spain )
Formentera is the smallest of Spain’s Balearic islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Formentera is reachable by ferry from its more crowded, better known island neighbor, Ibiza, and makes for a popular day-trip destination in the summertime. Formentera is known for its clear waters and long stretches of beach backed by dunes and pine trees. Pastimes include snorkeling and sailing, with equipment rentals and boat charters available.
The main island of Formentera is 19 kilometres (12 mi) long and is located about 6 kilometres (4 mi) south of Ibiza in the Mediterranean Sea. More specifically Formentera is part of the delimitation of the Balearic Sea which is a northwestern element of the Mediterranean Sea. Formentera major villages are Sant Francesc Xavier, Sant Ferran de ses Roques, El Pilar de la Mola and La Savina. Formentera comprises one municipality, also called Formentera
North of Formentera is the island of Espalmador (Illa de s'Empalmador in Catalan), which is the second largest island of the municipality, and is itself surrounded by a few minor islets. Espalmador is a tombolo, separated from the main island of Formentera by a shallow sandbar, and during low tide, it is possible for one to wade between the two islands. This area is a popular stopping point for those in yachts heading between Ibiza and Formentera.
Since the 1960s, Formentera has been a popular destination for hippies. Formentera is renowned across Europe for many pristine white beaches and the fact that nude sunbathing is allowed on most of its beaches. The Canadian writer Patrick Roscoe was born on Formentera. Meanwhile, Joni Mitchell wrote her 1971 album Blue on the island while Bob Dylan once lived in the Cap de Barbaria lighthouse on the island. Author Matt Haig also writes about visiting the island often in his twenties in Reasons to Stay Alive. The King Crimson album Islands' opening track, 'Formentera Lady' is named after the Island. Although metalled roads allow access to all parts of the island and cars are easily hired in the port, many people choose to rent mopeds or even bicycles due to the flat nature of most of the island and the availability of dedicated cycle tracks in many locations. The island also has four Martello towers.
Ferries to Formentera operate from their own terminal in Ibiza port, with departures every half hour in high season on large (200+ passenger) fast catamarans. The journey takes approximately 30 minutes with 10 minutes each leaving Ibiza, crossing the sea, and arriving in Formentera past the isthmus to Espalmador.

The Balearic island of Formentera is Ibiza's chilled-out little sister, beloved for its sensational beaches and off-grid hippy vibe!
THE ISLAND OF FORMENTERA, fourth largest of the Balearics, hangs off the southern edge of Ibiza like an unevenly formed dog bone dangling on a string. When I lived in Ibiza, I could never quite see the point of Formentera. Although it was right next door, it seemed a long way away. I used to send house guests there for the weekend, and they would come back wild-haired and unkempt, with aching muscles and sand in their shoes. When you asked what they'd seen and done, they shrugged. They had cycled about, lazed on the beautiful beaches… Clearly there wasn't a whole lot to do there. Perhaps that was the point: it was a less-is-more island whose very lack of action was part of the attraction.
Often called Ibiza's 'sister island', Formentera is more like its impoverished and painfully shy country cousin. For centuries it was adrift from the rest of the world, unknown and unvisited, a desert island made almost uninhabitable by pirate raids from the coast of Africa. Ever since Pink Floyd and Bob Dylan pitched up here in the 1970s, Formentera has been a last-resort island, somewhere you fled to when Ibiza, the international hippy trail, or the world in general, simply got too much. When Jules Verne was looking for an end-of-the-world destination for his wandering hero Hector Servadac, he chose the lighthouse at the far end of La Mola, where the cliffs stare out into an expanse of glittering sea.
You might say that Formentera is everything that Ibiza is not. This little island has none of Ibiza's disco frenzy, nothing like its excesses of construction and debauchery. When the tourists leave Formentera, promptly in mid-September, Ibiza still has another month of high-season hedonism to go. Meanwhile Formentera slumps back once again into low-season torpor, its beaches deserted, bars and restaurants shuttered and silent; and the island is reclaimed by farmers and fishermen.
