Becker Vineyards - Stonewall, Texas
This has to be one of the classic winery destination stops of the Texas Hill Country. Established in 1992 by Richard and Bunny Becker when there was nothing out there, they have now helped establish Fre...dericksburg and the Texas Hill Country as a top destination for wine lovers in the state. With both estate vines and access to vineyards from the Texas High Plains and throughout most of Texas, the Beckers' have grape resources to make just about any quality Texas wine you can imagine. Any time of the year is a great time to visit as the winery has many events and live music occasions on a regular basis. Most wines made here are Bordeaux, Burgundian and Rhone style. The list of wines is quite extensive and to pick out a few to grab your attention would do injustice to the others. One thing is for sure, the older the reds you have from Becker wines the better they will be! Plus, the reds are good for your heart, just ask the doctor. The estate grounds have a log cabin built around 1890s. The reception hall adjacent to the winery is a great place for events. The outside grounds and surrounding Hill Country landscape makes a good backdrop for weddings. And there is more than just wine! Check out the lavender fields! During their annual Lavender Festival, you can enjoy picking your own lavender then enjoy some great tasting Becker wine. The winery also makes a great place for your first wine date. What's there not to like about this place? You just can't go wrong here! Check out their website to see what the latest events are and plan your next trip accordingly.

Fat Ass Ranch and Winery - Fredericksburg, Texas
Having Just opened last Memorial Day weekend, the newest winery on the Texas Hill Country Winery Trail, HWY 290, is not only an eye catcher with its name, but also a cool place to just hang out and shoot the breeze with some good wine. Owners Gail and Jennie McCulloch have put their own unique Texas style stamp on the decor with a moonshine still out front, installed silo style restrooms, used pickup tailgates to fashion benches and parked a replica of the General Lee hot rod out front. Both the inside and the back patio have ample room for seating and sipping. They use all Texas grapes for their wines. The folks at Texas Custom Wine Works are assisting with the wine making. There are currently four wines to try. The whites are all made in stainless steel. Both dry and sweet ones are made from the same blend: Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Chardonnay. If you're a crisp white wine drinker, then the first dry white you'll like. The same goes for the dry and sweet red, they have the same blend of grapes with different sweetness: Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc. The sweet red has a very nice jammy taste to it. We were told that peach and watermelon wines are on the way soon. Future plans are to have a vineyard on site. Besides the wine, they have a number of cool items in the shop for sale made by Jennie and friends. Do check out the bug guards for your wine glass with some clever and catchy verses. It's worth the stop, even if it is just to say you've been to the Fat Ass Winery down the road!

The ‘Hottest’ Wine Trail in Texas is Off Hwy 290!
Goodtaste.tv
There’s no way around it: the way we taste our Texas wines has changed. We’re now America’s No. 5 wine-producing state! If you haven’t heard the buzz on the Fredericksburg Wine Road 290 as of late, it’s time to hit the trail. This serene stretch of road along US Highway 290 near Fredericksburg, Texas is being compared to the Napa of 30 years ago–a higher level of development, growth and quality. Up for an adventure (and some best wine in the state)? This is where it’s happening! The thirteen Texas wineries found along this route specialize in home-grown hospitality, with newcomers to the neighborhood like Messina Hof adding to 290’s already esteemed reputation with 3 Top of Class Winners at the 2014 San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo. We’re getting ahead of ourselves, however. The first stop on our Goodtaste tour of 290 landed us at 4.0 Cellars.
4.0’s impressive facility is a good starting point. They’re tasting room is a lively spot with plenty of foot traffic. Here you’ll taste award-winning Texas wines from three different producers: Brennan Vineyards, Lost Oak Winery, and McPherson Cellars. Talk about saving some time on travel (and gas!). They also do a fun ‘Texas Cheese & Wine Experience’ – Texas cheeses from Veldhuizen Cheese Company paired with five wines selected from 4.0 Cellars.
Up the road, maybe 200 yards, is the aforementioned Messina Hof Winery & Resort. One of the pioneers of Texas wines, standouts include their Cabernet Franc Private Reserve as well as their crisp, clear and pleasantly sweet Angel Riesling.
Just across the highway – and a place that’s always intrigued me – is Dan Gatlin’s Inwood Estates Vineyard. Dan is a bit of a renegade and works extremely hard to elevate the status of Texas wines. A MUST, according to Dan, is that a wine needs to say ‘Texas’ on the font label or it is not a true Texas wine. Inwood is known for its Tempranillo, but also doing some really great work with Cabernet — which has immense potential largely untapped in Texas.
We made fast friends with Inwood’s on-site bistro. Be sure to stick around for something to munch on…

William Chris Vineyards - 2010 Enchanté 1080p.mov
Enchanté is French, and we take its meaning well here in the Texas Hill Country! Please meet our newest, the 2010 vintage of Enchanté, our proud flagship wine. Earmarked mainly for our Hye Society members, just 604 cases were produced, sourced from 100% Texas grapes -- Cabernet, Merlot, Malbec, Cab Franc, and a touch of Ruby Cab. We can personally attest that this young wine pairs well with smoked venison and Lockhart quail. Hope to see you at the Winery, west of Austin on 290 between Johnson City and Fredericksburg. Enchanté, ya'll!
Lost Draw Cellars – Fredericksburg, Texas
Located in the Texas High Plains, Lost Draw Vineyards has done their best at contributing to the Texas wine industry by producing some great grapes. Many Texas winemakers can thank Lost Draw Vineyards for producing some top quality grapes for any number of wines produced by state wineries. Wine lovers know full well that good wine starts with good grapes….no ifs, ands or buts. In Fredericksburg, you can now find their tasting room, Lost Draw Cellars - a collaboration of partners Troy Ottmers, Andrew Sides, and Andy Timmons. Kim McPherson is also helping out with their initial wine making. At the Fredericksburg tasting room (opened last Nov 21st) you’ll be able to taste many of their quality wines. The late freeze of 2013 was a detriment to many Texas high plains vineyards. As a result, not all 2013 Texas vintages will be sourced from Texas grapes as wineries supplemented much of their grapes from New Mexico, California, and Washington. Lost Draw Vineyards has since installed a wind machine to help combat late freezes and proved its worth during an April 2014 freeze. Currently, there are eight wines for tasting. For whites, start with the 2013 Arroyo Blanco. It’s a blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Roussanne that has good character and quite smooth. Next, try the Gemutlichkeit. It's blended with Grenache Blanc, Viognier, and Roussanne that comes across as crisp and dry. The other white is a Gewürztraminer. It’s a really good one to sip and swirl on a lazy afternoon. End off the white list with their very nice and refreshing French Colombard. Now on to the reds! The Arroyo Rojo is a Mourvedre, Grenache, Carignan blend with a touch of Viognier. It's a good enjoyable mellow red wine. Their Tempranillo is a great one that lives up to the Texas reputation as Tempranillo country. It has good aroma, color, and quite fruit forward. Lastly, you’ll savor the Sangiovese red wine. This one is the star of the show! Made from 40 year old vines (yes 40 year old Texas vines), it just has that quality taste and finish you’d expect from old world wines. Sadly, we heard that Lost Draw will be pulling up these old vines, so this is likely one of the last vintages for their old Sangiovese grape vines. The Arroyo Blush is a blend of Grenache, Mourvedre, and Cinsault that is a bit sweet and refreshing when chilled with some tangerine like notes. It’s always great to visit a winery when they first open. The staff here are warm and welcoming and will treat you wonderfully. Troy can be found at the tasting room and is a good friendly guy to chat with, too. So come check them out when you’re in town and enjoy Fredericksburg's newest winery and tasting room as we don't think you'll be disappointed!

Fredericksburg Texas Bats 2
The Old Tunnel Wildlife Management Area is the smallest Wildlife Management Area in Texas, containing only 16.1 acres of land.
The abandoned railroad tunnel is home to up to three million Brazilian free-tailed bats (T. b. mexicana) and 3,000 Cave myotis (Myotis velifer) from April to October, more mammals than any other WMA.
From May to October, visitors come to watch the bats emerge from the tunnel each night, and nightly educational programs provide guests with a better understanding of the life history and ecology of bats. In July and August there are over three million Mexican Free-tailed bats (Tadarida brasiliensis) and 1,000-3,000 Cave Myotis (Myotis velifer) in Old Tunnel.
The Mexican Free-tailed bat is a medium-sized bat, weighing about 12-15 grams (12 paperclips). The title Mexican is added to their name because they migrate to Mexico in the winter months. Old Tunnel bats usually leave the tunnel in late October, and fly to Mexico. During this migration, they can fly at altitudes of 10,000 feet and speeds of 60 mph.
On summer nights, the Old Tunnel bats usually emerge within an hour before or after sunset. Most bats exit through the south end of the tunnel, spiraling in a counter-clockwise direction in order to gain altitude over nearby trees.

Duchman Family Winery -- Driftwood, Texas
Founded in 2004, this Italian style winery in Texas is making good, affordable wines. Some Texas wine lovers will remember this place as Mandola Winery, which has since been sold. (Not to worry though, the Mandola's have a restaurant conveniently located next door.) One will first notice the vast vineyards that have been planted at the estate with a wide variety of grapes. The wine selection is well balanced between white and reds. The majority of the wines are crafted in a dry style, yet there are a few sweeter and dessert wines available in the mix. The Montepulciano should not be missed! An upscale restaurant on the premises has one of the more unique views of the vineyard and the Hill Country. When visiting, sit back under the oak trees at one of the picnic tables with your favorite bottle and enjoy this piece of Italy in Texas. Salute!

Hye Meadow Winery -- Hye, Texas
A brand spanking new winery is in the Texas Hill Country! In fact, it's so new that it's still under construction! Well, that doesn't prevent this winery entrepreneur from unofficially opening up their doors. Owners Mike & Denise Batek may have started ankle deep in the winery business with a couple of barrels over at William & Chris Winery, but now they are all in and there's no turning back. Besides a hope and a dream, Mike is a graduate of Texas Tech's viticulture program. Along with Jeff Ivy, the winemaker, these two gents are working on building a fine facility in Hye as well as making some great wine. The wine production building is where tasting is currently done. It is quite spacious and looks like it has capacity for their current and future needs. There are currently five wines available for tasting. All grapes were sourced from Washington, but don't let that dissuade you from trying them (sometimes when wineries get started, they have to source grapes from out of state until they get their own vineyard situated). To our die-hard Texas wine lover readers, keep in mind that Washington has some excellent grapes. The two whites available are a Chardonnay and a Gewurztraminer blend, both 2011. The Chardonnay has about 10% Riesling for a little extra twist and is naked -- aka unoaked. It is quite crisp and fruit forward. The Edelzwicker is the 50/50 Gewurztraminer and Riesling blend. It is quite aromatic and is excellent when served chilled. The blush wine, also 2011, is not overly sweet and is very refreshing in this Texas heat. It is a Gewurztraminer with 2% Cabernet added. The two reds available are 2010 vintages. The Sangiovese has a surprisingly good depth and complexity for such a varietal. It has about 25% Cabernet added to it. The Cabernet Sauvignon is young and fresh, and should continue to age well for a couple more years. Yes, it is good to drink now, but we think it will only improve if you let the wine gods enrich the flavor a little longer. Of course, we will feature these wines more in depth in a future blog posting. Sometime in July, Mike plans on releasing wines sourced from Texas grapes (both 2011 vintages). One will be a Viognier and the other will be a red blend of Tempranillo, Merlot, and Mourvedre. Though the tasting room and event buildings are still under construction, don't let that hinder you from admiring their majestic oak trees that form the backdrop to this exciting new venue. It is quite spectacular! How could one ever say no to this piece of wine country? There are plans in the future to add a vineyard. Mike is thinking about starting with Touriga and Aglianico. Both grapes have shown great promise in quality and yield in the Texas Hill Country. Who knows, maybe a port will be in the works, too! There are some events happing at the winery starting in July (including a pig roast) with the official grand opening on July 27th. This winery is a great addition to Hye and the Texas Hill Country. Do make this one of your stops on your next wine trek. Cheers!
