Repositioning mooring chains Torridge estuary Appledore Devon England UK
April 2016
Exploring the sea at Appledore, past and present.
Was wonderful watching the students going from room to room in the North Devon Maritime Museum finding things out. In fact two girls wrote in their diaries that they wished they had had more time to finish it properly. Appledore is a lovely little fishing village which still has a shipyard which builds ships.

Bideford is a historic port town on the estuary of the River Torridge in north Devon, south-west England. Bideford is the main town of the Torridge local government district. Bideford is served by the A39 Atlantic Highway and A386 roads.
A ferry operates between Bideford quay and Lundy Island, which lies about 22 miles (35 km) away in the Bristol Channel. The same ship, the MS Oldenburg, also provides evening cruises from Bideford along the River Torridge but in the downstream direction only as it is too big to pass under the Bideford Long Bridge.
The Bideford, Westward Ho! and Appledore Railway was an unusual and short-lived railway built entirely on this peninsula with no direct connection to the rest of the British railway network. The locomotives were fitted with skirts to protect pedestrians, as at one point the line ran along the quay at Bideford.
Lundy is the largest island in the Bristol Channel. It lies 12 miles (19 km) off the coast of Devon, England, in the district of Torridge, about a third of the distance across the channel from Devon, England to South Wales. Lundy gives its name to a British sea area and is one of the islands of England. Lundy has been designated by Natural England as national character area 159, one of England's natural regions. Lundy was granted to the Knights Templar by Henry II in 1160. The Templars were a major international maritime force at this time, with interests in North Devon, and almost certainly an important port at Bideford or on the River Taw in Barnstaple.
The town of Bideford has grown to cover land on both sides of the River Torridge; the area located east of the river is known as East-the-Water, also known as Shamwickshire to locals. Much of the land that has been built on in recent years is drained marshland.

Having salmon fished for over 70 years Stephen has many fascinating tales to tell. Here is another clip which didn't make our short film.
Unecessary, Dangerous, wash from MOD fuel vessels.MOV
For years, this MOD training/fuel vessel in particular, has travelled past Appledore quay and close to Appledore shipyard and back again.
Each time it does so, it creates unnecessary, dangerous, wash that erodes the riverbanks, disturbs the wildlife and has a deleterious effect on moored vessels.
Our Service men and women are being trained to conduct themselves like this in foreign ports.
North Devon Fishermen Condemn UK Government
Full story below: From left to right: Steve Crowther, national chairman of UKIP, Peter Taylor, fisherman, Steve Taylor, fisherman and Tony Rutherford, managing director of Bideford Fisheries.
A North Devon Fisherman has accused the Government of targeting UK Fishermen.
Bideford Fisheries, Appledore was the location for the recent meeting of UKIP National Chairman Steve Crowther, Cllr. Derek Sargent and representitives of Bideford Fisheries Peter & Steve Taylor and MD Tony Rutherford, where the comments were made.
Steve Taylor's verdict on the UK Government is common to many members of North Devon's and the UK's fishing community and is the worst possible response to his earlier plee for them to help save North Devon's 1000-year-old plus fishing industry.
The criticism stems from the fact that the UK Government via the MMO (Marine Management Organisation) recently gave them a grant of £3.8 Million to refurbish their fish processing plant but within months took away their fishing permission despite abundant fish stocks.

Walter's Emporium in Appledore.
I met Walter three weeks ago in Appledore while wandering around eating fish and chips and seeking out Hocking's ice cream factory. I thought it would be great to bring students here and together with the lifeboat, the North Devon Maritime Museum and the lovely Irsha street it makes for a wonderful few hours in a very beautiful village on the estuary of the Taw and the Torridge rivers. Even though it was raining most of the students really enjoyed it.
