Green Turtle Tortuguero Costa Rica - Mawamba Lodge
Green Turtle Tortuguero Costa Rica
Its a short but great video of a green sea turtle returning to the ocean after nesting on the beach at Tortuguero Costa Rica, right in front of Mawamba Lodge. Green Turtles come to Tortuguero every year from July to October to nest and during the season they will come ashore at least twice to lay their eggs. Hatchlings are born 2 months after the turtle has nested and is also a wonderful natural spectacle worth seeing. Come to Tortuguero, dont miss it!

Tortuguero National Park in Costa Rica
Tortuguero is one of Costa Rica's most popular National Parks. It is a wilderness area with great biological variety. The wildlife is rich and diverse, with eleven different defined habitats.
Strong Caribbean currents have provided a long, straight 22 mile expanse of beach which is a favored nesting ground for sea turtles. Hawks-bill, loggerheads, and Pacific green turtles nest from July through October. The leather-back, the largest sea turtle species in the world, nests from February to July.
Water is an abundant natural resource with up to 240 inches of rainfall per year. An infinite number of interconnected channels, waterways, lagoons and lakes are fed by rivers that carry their inland sediment load to the coast.
Occasionally, the sediment filled plain is interrupted by forested rolling hills, composed of ancient volcanic cinder cones, such as Tortuguero Hill and the Lomas de Sierpe, which looms over 1,000 feet.

Tortuguero Beach - Tortuguero, Costa Rica
David's Been Here is in Costa Rica's Tortuguero where David is touring all the area's top sites and attractions. Here David presents a video to the area's main Beach, Tortuguero Beach. A huge strip of beautiful, tropical shores- this beach is a must visit for anyone touring the Tortuguero area. Be careful when visiting, however, in most parts swimming is banned due to the high concentration of sharks and barracudas in the water. If you want to jump in, look for the locals who're swimming anywhere along the 35 km stretch of beach- locals always know best. For more information on visiting this and all the top spots of the area, check out the David's Been Here Guide to Tortuguero, now available for your Kindle as well.

While in a dark night she was looking for a save place to nest, trying to preserve their specie as natural behavior, suddenly this Jaguar capture her to get feed, as well it is a natural behavior, it is complex eco sistem but it beautiful to discover it and learn about, as Naturalist I enjoy it every day, it is a shame that many people are missing the chance to come and experience this.

Canal de Tortuguero (Costa Rica) Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about Canal de Tortuguero.
The starting point of our journey is the harbour city of Puerto Limón, the only important city on Costa Rica’s Caribbean coast, in Central America. It is a vibrant place surrounded by lush tropical landscape that makes the whole of this coastal section somewhat uninhabitable. The town's origins date back to the early colonial period. Indeed, Christopher Columbus and his son set anchor here in 1502. The boat journey through the watery maze of the Tortuguero Canal begins slowly in order to accustom the passengers to the sight of impenetrable jungle. A large Rust Belly Guan hops from branch to branch. Its plumage is soaking wet and drips with every movement. At first, the canal travels through a partly inhabited coastal area with small wooden huts and tiny boats. The Parque Nacional Tortugero measures a hundred and ninety square kilometres and extends into the sea. No one is allowed to settle within the park and the animals seem to know this: a green heron sits among the leaves and spots some playful Capuchin Monkeys. We stay at a safe distance from the bright red Strawberry Poison Dart Frog, a tree-climbing frog that can inject toxic substances into the skin. The indigenous Indians once used its secretions for their arrows. The Laguna Lodge is one of the most comfortable of the region and an oasis amid the wilderness. Its souvenir area is designed like a shell and contains the work of local artists including clothing, masks and wood carvings. The Tortuguero Canal: a natural world whose beauty is like an exotic paradise!

Baby sea turtles hatching from a mound of eggs at Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica. This mound was located just down the beach from another turtle laying eggs (see separate video). It appeared that dozens of turtles hatched from this spot, but they were already well into it by the time we walked up.

Baby turtles in Tortuguero, Costa Rica
We were lucky to see a nest of baby turtles hatching and crawling out to sea on Tortuguero beach, Costa Rica. I believe these are baby Green Turtles (not positive though).
We saw the baby turtles around 430 PM walking on Tortuguero beach on our own in November. By November the turtle nestings are pretty much over but babies hatching were more common.

When to visit:
The Green Sea and Hawksbill turtle's nesting season runs from July to October with the peak in August, and the Leatherback turtles nest from February to April. It is possible to see individual turtles at any time of the year.
The weather in Tortuguero National Park should not be much of a consideration when deciding when to visit. It rains here all the time, and the peak nesting season is in the rainy season when Caribbean rains can blow in on a north wind and stay for weeks. This is one of the rainiest areas of Costa Rica, and even in the dry season afternoon showers are common.
Tortuguero National Park is a National Park within the Tortuguero Conservation Area. The reserve is also included in the Humedal Caribe Noreste, a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The park is located in the Limon Province of northeastern Costa Rica. It is the third-most visited park in Costa Rica, despite the fact that it can be reached only by airplane or boat.
The park has incredible biological variety, due to the existence within the reserve of eleven different habitats, including rainforest, swamps, beaches, and lagoons. It is located in a tropical climate, is very humid, and receives up to 250 inches (6,400 mm) of rain a year.

Miss Junie's Lodge, Tortuguero, Costa Rica
Tortuguero.... IS... AMAZING!
What an honour it was to produce this video for Miss Junie’s Lodge, the first and longest standing restaurant in Tortuguero, Costa Rica. Miss Junie’s family have long been the backbone in the Tortuguero village and have been supplying delicious Caribbean dishes to the earliest of turtle biologists since then 1950’s. Accessible only via plane or boat this makes Tortuguero one of the most remote places in Costa Rica. In the 1950s when Dr. Archie Carr, then a young graduate professor at the University of Florida, made his first trips to the Caribbean in search of answers to his many questions about sea turtles, even the most basic facts about the life history of sea turtles were unknown. No one knew, for instance, that green turtles take up to 50 years to reach sexual maturity or that females likely return to the same beach where they were hatched to deposit their own eggs. The Tortuguero National Park is one of the most varied parks boasting high rainforests to marshy lands, long stretches of beach, wide open canals perfect for crocodile spotting, and is also one of the most important breeding grounds for the Green Sea Turtle ON EARTH! The wildlife here is rich and diverse with unusually large populations of monkeys, birds and fish. It's been amazing learning from the most historic families here, about the animals, culture and history that exist in this proper PURA VIDA oasis.
One thing that we're definitely bring back to Australia is the delicious homemade coconut candy recipe made from scratch!
We hope you enjoy this video, as much as we enjoyed making it, and please, if you like our videos, don’t forget to hit the like and share buttons! #puravida

Costa Rica Wildlife - Tortuguero National Park
A random collection of wildlife video clips film in Costa Rica's Tortuguero National Park in October of 2010. Species include a small boa constrictor, long-billed curlew, red brocket deer, strawberry poison dart frog, golden-mantled howler monkey and long-nosed bats. Filmed with the Canon 7D and Canon lenses.
Turtles of Tortuguero
Set along Costa Rica's northeastern Caribbean coast, Tortuguero is the most important nesting site for the endangered green sea turtle in the Western Hemisphere. The green sea turtle population dropped very low in the 1960s, when hordes of turtles were killed for their meat and used as food. These days the green turtle is making a slow comeback, thanks in part to the hard work of conservation agencies in Costa Rica and other countries.
Giant leatherback, hawksbill, and loggerhead sea turtles also nest at Tortuguero. As a traveler here, you may be able to witness these ancient creatures along the Tortuguero shoreline. Flashlights and photography are not allowed, however, as they interfere with the nesting process.
Females nest at night. They crawl out of the ocean and find a dry spot to lay their eggs. They then use their flippers to dig a hole and deposit their eggs into the hole. On average, a female sea turtle will lay 80 to 120 eggs. Most females will nest twice during the nesting season. Once the mother has left her nest, she will never return to it.
Once all the eggs are in the chamber, the mother will use her flippers to cover it with sand. Barring predators, the eggs will hatch in about 60 days and the baby turtles will begin their perilous trek towards the ocean.
Tortuguero is a special place in Costa Rica. As a traveler here, you have the possibility of witnessing one of nature's most spectacular and ancient rituals—the nesting (and eventual hatching) of sea turtles.
