In this brief video you can find seven little known facts about San Marino.
More information about the video content bellow:
1. San Marino is the oldest republic in the world and the oldest sovereign state still in existence – it’s been around since 301 C.E. It also has the oldest constitution in the world (that’s still in use) – it was enacted in 1600.
2. There’s no national debt. And virtually no unemployment, either. San Marino maintains the lowest unemployment rate in Europe, has a state budget surplus, and no national debt.
3. San Marino has 2 heads of state. The Captains Regent (Capitani Reggenti) are the two heads of state of San Marino. They are elected every six months by the Grand and General Council – the country's parliament. Normally the Regents are chosen from opposing parties and they serve a six-month term. The investiture of the Captains Regent takes place on 1 April and 1 October every year, beginning in 1243.
4. San Marino had the world's first democratically elected communist government, which held office between 1945 and 1957.
5. It wasn't until 1990 that San Marino first played as a nation in an official match, and they've been breaking records ever since, more often than not for the wrong reasons. San Marino have won one game in their history, beating Liechtenstein 1-0 in a friendly in 2004. They are currently ranked joint 208th in the FIFA rankings, sharing last place with Bhutan.
6. Mount Titano is the name of the hill where the main city of San Marino is located. In each one of the three slopes of Mount Titano you can observe one tower, each one with a different size, style and meaning behind them. The three towers of San Marino are part of the national flag and you can actually get inside two of them for a small fee.
7. There are some interesting museums in San Marino, such as the Museum of Torture, a Wax Museum and the Museum of Curiosities. The Museum of Torture houses a collection of over 100 different instruments of torture and torture techniques. The collection consists partly of genuine torture instruments from the 16th and 17th centuries. San Marino's Museum of Curiosities features a unique collection of unbelievable but true facts, eccentric objects, bizarre personalities and more. Amongst the most unusual pieces on show are a trap for fleas, a watch to wear on your nose, glasses for people with cross-eyes, an electrical device to stop adolescent boys from masturbating, an umbrella-whip for a one-horse carriage, a petrol-powered hairdryer, glasses for wigs and many, many more.

We are in the micro country of San Marino, the oldest republic in the world, for this episode of Aboard the Guiding Light.
We are going to walk to and through the three towers on Monte Titano, which are so important they are on the national flag and coat of arms. After that we will see the national museum and the Torture Museum before heading to the Basilica of San Marino and St Francis Church.
I can't wait to show you this amazing little country and I hope you SUBSCRIBE to my YouTube, so you can see episodes before they are published on my website. Plus you will have access to past seasons. You can learn more about your host, the boat, read his blog, and more at svGuidingLight.com.
San Marnio & Bologna
We spent a weekend exploring Bologna, Italy, and took a day trip to tiny country of San Marino – a short train and bus ride from Bologna. The video is a summary of what we did there, and you’ll see how BEAUTIFUL San Marino is! Seriously though, if you’re thinking about visiting San Marino you definitely should. It’s totally worth it because of how beautiful it is.
Things to do in San Marino:
Walk around and take in the view: it’s so picturesque that it felt like it wasn’t a real place, and we were actually on a movie set.
The Three Towers of San Marino are a group of towers located on the three peaks of Monte Titano. Built directly onto the mountain stone, the towers are the symbol of San Merino and provide a 360-degree view of the valley below.
If you like museums, San Marino has a lot of random ones! Including a Vampire museum, a wax museum, a torture museum and an ancient weapons museum.
Things to do in Bologna:
EAT! The food is incredible here. Pasta, pizza, gelato... it's not known as the 'fat city' for nothing.
Bologna is THE place to eat hand rolled, fresh pasta served along with complex, meat-laden ragus that many around the world as define as bolognese sauce. A friend recommended we visit Ristorante Pizzeria Pino Bologna to try the Tagliatelle – the OG bolognaise.
We did a free walking tour of Bologna which was excellent:
During the free walking tour you visit Due Torri, Basilica Santo Stefano, Archiginnasio, Piazza de’ Celestini - Casa di Lucio Dalla, Piazza Maggiore, Basilica di San Petronio -, Cattedrale di San Pietro, Jewish Guetto.
Climb the Ansinelli Tower - 498 steps and 5 euro per person. The views of Bologna are incredible. You MUST book online in advance:
Let’s not forget about the nightlife in Bologna – it's a student city so it’s PUMPING. No pub crawls are available, but it’s not hard to find cool pubs and bars and spark up convos with the locals.

Torture Museum: San Gimignano, Siena, Volterra, Lucca, Montepulciano
A journey through human cruelty.
This exhibit captures with words and images a unique world-wide collection: 100 instruments produced for causing pain and death.
It shows exceptionally rare pieces dated back to the XVI, XVII and XVIII century and more recent philological reconstructions of ancient and lost instruments.

St Augustine Mid evil torture museum
The emotions inspired by the “Medieval Torture Collection” will transport you back in time hundreds of years to some of the most miserable moments in human history.
Their exhibit is a unique presentation that combines academic research with the contradictive, emotionally repulsive draw of a time in history when torture and torment were commonplace.
