Tory's Den and Falls at Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina
In this video I take you out to a north-western part of Hanging Rock State Park, located near Danbury, in Stokes County, North Carolina. We are at the Tory's Den Access. The last time I was here was way back in 2012, so it was great to see this area of the park again. From the parking lot, we take a short hike down an easy trail to Tory's Falls and then continue on to Tory's Den. Tory's Falls is a very unique waterfall. Unfortunately this creek tends to run shallow in the summer months. At times of high water flow, it's really spectacular. Tory's Den is a small cave in a rock structure just downhill from the falls. The area gets its name because local Tories, colonists who wanted to remain loyal to Britain, use to camp in and around this area when their properties were confiscated by local Whigs, those in favor of independence. At the end of the video you can pause some slides showing some historical accounts of the area. Thanks for watching!

The Tory's Den story:
The cave seen here is just the entrance. Apparently there is a huge cavern behind and below it that was accessible in Colonial times to accommodate a hundred people.
The Story of Tory's Den is on the kiosk at trail-head:
During the American Revolution, Stokes County was located near the western frontier of the thirteen colonies. British and American forces fought no major battles here, but occasionally neighbors clashed over which side deserved their allegiance. One of these skirmishes occurred at Hanging Rock State Park.
One night in 1778, a band of Tories raided Whig Colonel John Martin's rock house and escaped with supplies. Local legend holds that they also kidnapped Martin's daughter and held her for ransom. The next morning, Martin and his neighbors armed themselves and attacked Tory's Den.
The Tory's Den was home to about 100 British sympathizers who lost their property to the Whigs after the war began. After Tories raided Martin's rock house, a campfire seen one night near the cave alerted Martin to their location. The Whigs retaliated by attacking the den.
Col. Martin took the Tories by surprise and lost none of his men in the attack. Most of the Tories were taken prisoner. After the revolution ended in 1783. Congress passed a law returning unsold Tory lands to their original owners -- if they would sign an oath of alliance to the United States of America.

Upper and Lower Cascades at Hanging Rock State Park, NC
Two short out and back trails to some very nice waterfalls in the gorge along Cascade Creek at Hanging Rock State Park, near the town of Danbury, right in the middle of Stokes County, North Carolina. In the first part of the video I take you down to the Upper Cascades via a short (0.2 miles one way) trail from the visitor center main parking area. In the second part of the video I take you north, down to the other end of the gorge and significantly lower in elevation down another short trail (about 0.5 miles one way) at the Lower Cascades Access area. Both of these waterfalls are extremely popular and heavily visited during the warmer months, but in this visit I had the gorge to myself. Recorded at the end of January, 2014. Thanks for watching!
Exploring Tise Falls at Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina
Tise Falls is a relatively unknown and rarely visited waterfall in Hanging Rock State Park near the town of Danbury in Stokes County, North Carolina. Tise is the largest waterfall in the park, but the obscure feature is not found on maps or park literature, and there is no trail leading to the falls. The falls are found along Cascade Creek in the very steep and treacherous Cascade Creek Gorge. Inexperienced hikers should avoid the gorge! Thanks for watching!

Frozen waterfalls in Hanging Rock State Park, NC
A bomb cyclone brought frigid Arctic temperatures across much of the U.S. during the first week of January 2018. Waterfalls, creeks, and rivers froze all over North Carolina, an extremely rare occurrence. I wasn't able to get out during the week due to work and remaining snow/ice, making many roads treacherous. But finally, on Sunday, I was able to take a full day to see some frozen waterfalls. I chose Hanging Rock State Park which is relatively close to home, has access roads I knew would be fine, and has many waterfalls that are accessible by easy trails. Although I didn't get out further into the real mountains, my trip did not disappoint. The serene beauty of frozen waterfalls is truly a unique experience for a native North Carolinian.
The weather was still quite frigid all day, ranging between 10-25F. I started with Lower Cascade Falls, which I knew would be the most crowded waterfall in the park later that afternoon. (I was right, when I passed by the parking area mid-afternoon there were 80+ cars with many along the road.) At 8:45 AM I had it to myself for 20 minutes before a few people trickled in. The pool was completely frozen and it was easy to walk up to the falls. Next I drove to the visitors center and hiked down the Indian Creek Trail to Hidden Falls and Window Falls. The frozen column of Window Falls was awesome. I got to sit on 6-inch sheets of ice at the base of the column and saw blue hues that I could not fully capture on film.
Back at the visitors center I went down to Upper Cascade Falls, which was disappointing because the sun was directly overhead. I took a quick detour to hike Moores Knob, which will be my next video. Then I drove down to Torys Den. This is probably the best Torys Falls will look, or at flood stage which I've also seen. Lastly I drove down to the Dan River boat access to hike the Riverbluffs Loop Trail. The Dan River was completely frozen over in sections. It was a nice end to a full day of ice exploration. In total I did 6 separate hikes over 9 hours. Although my hands were angry with me, the experience was worth it.

Hiking Hanging Rock State Park NC with Phantom 4 in 4K
I just went hiking while on vacation at Hanging Rock State Park in Danbury, North Carolina with my DJI Osmo and Phantom drone. It was a beautiful day outside and the Fall leaves were just starting to change. Two weeks later would have been much better for leaf color though. it was my first time using the Osmo outdoors in an active setting and the built-in microphone worked, but as you can tell the audio was very scratchy and weak. The movie required lots of audio editing and boosting. From now on I'll definitely have my Rode mic or even lapel microphone.

Exploring Lower Cascades at Hanging Rock State Park, North Carolina
Hi guys! In this video we again visit one of my favorite places, Hanging Rock State Park near the town of Danbury, in Stokes County, North Carolina. We take a short hike along the Lower Cascades Trail, which leads us down into the northernmost part of the Cascade Creek Gorge. There are numerous waterfalls and cascades in the area, but the highlight is the Lower Cascades waterfall. After viewing the falls from down in the gorge, we climb up the cliff and view them from the rim of the large rock face. It was also a great time to enjoy a mug of coffee before bushwhacking back to the trail. Thanks so much for watching, and please leave a comment below!
