Visitors visiting Kochi City, located in Shikoku, are recommended to visit Katsurahama Beach. Though swimming is prohibited here due to the strong current, there are cultural and historic points of interest located here.

A peacemaker between the Choshu and Satsuma clan and a key figure in ending Japan’s feudal period, Sakamoto Ryoma is Kochi’s favorite son. Visitors can find the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum here at Katsurahama Beach, with displays of his life and his involvement in shaping modern Japan.

Hours: 9:00 to 17:00
Closed: Opened All Year Round
Admission: 500 yen (excluding special exhibitions)

The Tosa Dog Fighting Center is located here as well. A unique facility, the dogs here are dressed up to fight in a fighting ring. Though the “matches” are not every day, visitors may wish to visit the museum located within the facility to learn more about this Koichi practice.

In addition to the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum and Tosa Dog Fighting Center, visitors can visit a small aquarium on the beach and a shrine. The restaurants nearby serve Kochi’s local delicacy, katsuo no tataki (bonito).

**From Kochi Station, board the Kochiken Kotsu bus. The one-way journey to Katsurahama should take about 35 minutes with a cost of 690 yen.

**My Yu Bus’s route is Kochi Station⇔Mount Godaisan⇔Katsurahama. The one way journey from Kochi Station should take about 70 minutes. The one day pass (valid only on the day of purchase) is 1000 yen.

Spot1:Shimanto River
Shimanto River is surrounded by untouched natural forests. In addition to rafting and canoeing, there are campsites along the riverside where you can have a barbecue under the stars while listening to the sweet chirping of birds.
Cross to the other side of the river using the Chinka Bridge. Crossing a simple bridge with no rails is a thrilling and an unforgettable experience.

Spot2:Kochi Castle
Amongst the top 100 castles in Japan, the Kochi Castle has been chosen as the oldest one. The Kochi Castle that is built atop a hill, offers a spectacular view. Especially in Spring, the Castle garden becomes full of beautiful blooming cherry blossoms that attract crowds regardless of day and night.
There are many museums in the area, and it is a favorite destination of history fans.

Spot2:Katsurahama
You can see the beautiful Pacific Ocean from the shores of Katsurahama. Although you can't swim here, you can view the magnificent sunset over the horizon as you take a stroll along the beach.
There is a statue of Ryoma Sakamoto, who contributed greatly to the modernization of Japan. Also, take your time to visit the Tosa dog museum, aquariums or just stop by to purchase some souvenirs.

Food:Seared Bonito
You can see the beautiful Pacific Ocean from the shores of Katsurahama. Although you can't swim here, you can view the magnificent sunset over the horizon as you take a stroll along the beach.

Tosa-Inu of Shikoku: Glimpses of a Japanese National Treasure

This was photographed at the TOSA TOKEN CENTER,located on the beach at Katasurahama on the southeast of the major (but relatively inaccessible) Japanese island of Shikoku, not far from Tosa. The CENTER is sponsored by the City of Kochi. It is intended as an educational center, where families can come with their children to visit the museum of the Tosa Inu and see dog combats. Although the small bit of a dog contest--which is a dog version of Sumo wrestling -- shown in this video is heavily edited in order to be suitable for family viewing, discretion is urged for those who think they might be sensitive. At the same time, this form of contest is far more on the order of wrestling (and is modelled on Sumo wrestling), and so should not be compared with bull fighting and dog fighting in the West. I mean to be neither approving nor disapproving of Tosa dog combat (which is legal in Japan -- but gambling on contests is illegal)but meanto be giving a rare glimpse, and so a little education about, a hard to learn about culture.

高知 坂本竜馬像を桂浜で見てきました。子供の頃家族旅行で高知県に来たことがあるので、たぶんその時にもここを訪れているはずですが、はっきり覚えていません。土佐犬の闘犬ショーみたいなのがあって、その看板をなんとなく覚えています。
