Finding Sendai’s Rinnō-ji Temple | Japan 2016 | Episode 14 Pt 1
We had gran plans for our second day in Sendai, unfortunately Mother Nature stepped in and scratched off Plan A.
We had to quickly form a Plan B, and after a quick pitstop at the hotel to try a Sendai specialty we picked up at the train station we headed out for the day, our final destination Rinnō-ji Temple.
In the first part of this two part episode we also make an interesting stop at a Japanese bank, where we are directed to the first floor, then third floor and then back down to the first floor. That was a bit confusing!
We also have lunch with a view at Otooya. Nicole attempts beef tongue again, but instead of just a single piece to try her entire meal is beef tongue.
After a quick stroll along the boulevard of Jozenji-dori Avenue, we start the hike out to Rinnō-ji Temple. It was an interesting hike, feeling a little off the beaten path, through some residential areas of Sendai. We happen upon a few temples along the way. While not the main attraction for the day, they were impressive and we were happy to have stumbled upon them.
Spoiler: We didn’t find Rinnō-ji in this part of the episode! ????

Horinin Temple and Graveyard in Tsutsujigaoka, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan
Late afternoon I was coming home and saw from afar the turret high pagoda. Towered over the environment, so it was hard to miss. It turned out that the great pagoda stands in the middle (in Japanese reality) cemetery - Horinin Temple. In addition to the pagoda there were also other interesting buildings. But it was late afternoon and the cemetery seemed to be closed. But once I will go to Horinin Temple again, to show you this pretty amazing and beautiful cemetery.

105. Bike ride in Nishimiyagino, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan
Bike ride in Nishimiyagino, Sendai, Miyagi, Tohoku, Japan. June 12th, 2014 I went on a trip to Tosho-gu Shrine. The day was beautiful although a bit windy, but it's normal in Sendai City. I decided to ride by Miyaginohara Sports Park, where are located two large sports stadiums - baseball and football one. Oh... I scared the old lady, bad Bobby. Baseball stadium You see now on the left. The football stadium is a bit tucked away and still You can not see it. It seems to me that here it was a small earthquake, but on a bike it's hard to tell. I'm driving into an area of Miyaginohara Sports Park. There is always someone, somewhere is building something, so the view on the left not surprising me so much. It's Friday, and something telling me that tomorrow there will be a baseball match here. And here, in front of me, You can see the football stadium. It is slightly smaller than a baseball stadium, but this is not surprising me, because in Japan baseball is much popular than football. But it's time for me. Tosho-gu Shrine is waiting... I have already said that the wind was blowing ...? Hence, I chose the right music with the significant title Leaf on the wind.

Entsū-in (円通院) is a famous Myōshin-ji-branch Rinzai Zen Buddhist temple in Matsushima, Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. It was founded next to Zuigan-ji in honour of the grandson of Date Masamune. His mausoleum of 1647 is decorated with Namban art, with |motifs inspired by contact with the West and has been designated an Important Cultural Property. There is also a Japanese garden attributed to Kobori Enshū.
The Main Hall has a thatched hip roof and is known as the Daihitei (大悲亭 lit. Great Sadness Cottage?). It was dismantled and moved from Edo. Inside is enshrined a Muromachi period statue of Kannon seated on a lotus throne. Made of Japanese cypress using the yoseki-zukuri technique, it is gilded over lacquer.
Mausoleum
The three-bay Tamaya (霊屋?) or mausoleum of Date Mitsumune, grandson of Date Masamune, was built in 1647 and is an Important Cultural Property. Inside, the shrine of Date Mitsumune is decorated with motifs including spades, hearts, diamonds, clubs, roses and other western flowers. The Tamaya was damaged by the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.
Gardens
karesansui garden
The gardens of Entsū-in are divided into four areas: a karesansui garden; a moss garden around a pond shaped like the character for heart (心), attributed to Kobori Enshū; a rose garden inspired by the Date encounter with the Christian west; and a natural stand of cryptomeria. In autumn the temple is celebrated for its momiji.

Matsushima Bay, famous for some 260 tiny islands (島 - shima) covered in pines (松 - matsu) — hence the name -- and ranked as one of Japan's Three Great Views.
In 1689, Haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited Matsushima on the trip recorded in Narrow Road to the Deep North. A well-known poem often attributed to Basho claims to record his reaction, signifying that nothing more could be said:
Matsushima ah!
A-ah, Matsushima, ah!
Matsushima, ah!
Today's Matsushima is perhaps a little less inspiring, but still a worthwhile day trip if in the region.
The town did not suffer significant damange due to the Great East Japan Earthquake; the tsunami damage was minimal. The temples, shrines, and sight seeing destinations are still there and still worth the trip.
The Senseki train from Sendai is currently functional and travel to Matsushima-kaigan station is possible.
Get in
The town is only a short distance from prefectural capital Sendai.
By train
Most visitors arrive on the JR Senseki Line (仙石線) connecting Sendai (25 minutes by express train or 40 minutes by local) and Ishinomaki. The most convenient station is Matsushima-Kaigan (松島海岸). The Matsushima station on the JR Tohoku Main Line is located a fair distance away from the seashore.
From Tokyo, the Shinkansen bullet train runs to Sendai for connection to the Senseki Line. The total one-way fare is ¥10,900 using the fastest, all-reserved shinkansen service, and the journey to Matsushima-Kaigan lasts around 2 3/4 hours. There is no charge if you use the Japan Rail Pass.
By boat
Another popular choice is to take the JR Senseki line train to Hon-Shiogama (don't mistake it with JR Tohuku line train to Shiogama station), connect to a sightseeing boat to Matsushima (viewing some of the famous islands along the way), then return by train.

Background of KEGON falls:
Kegon Falls (華厳滝 Kegon Taki) is located at Lake Chūzenji (source of the Oshiri River) in Nikkō National Park near the city of Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. The falls were formed when the Daiya River was rerouted by lava flows. The main falls had a height of approximately 97 metres (318 ft) and about twelve smaller waterfalls are situated behind and to the sides of Kegon Falls, leaking through the many cracks between the mountain and the lava flows.
Background of Budha temple: Nikkō Tōshō-gū (日光東照宮) is a Tōshō-gū Shinto shrine located in Nikkō, Tochigi Prefecture, Japan. Together with Futarasan Shrine and Rinnō-ji, it forms the Shrines and Temples of Nikkō UNESCO World Heritage Site, with 42 structures of the shrine included in the nomination.
