Panama-Bocas del Toro:
Bocas del Toro is a province of Panama. Its extension is 4,643.9 square kilometers comprising the mainland and nine main islands. The province consists of the Bocas del Toro Archipelago, Bahía Almirante (Almirante Bay), Laguna de Chiriquí (Chiriquí Lagoon), and adjacent mainland. The capital is the city of Bocas del Toro (Bocas Town) on Isla Colón (Colón Island). Other major cities or towns include Almirante, and Changuinola. The province has a total population of 125,461 people (2010).Christopher Columbus and his crew discovered the area in 1502. Bocas del Toro borders the Caribbean Sea to the north, Limón Province of Costa Rica to the west, Chiriquí Province to the south, and Ngöbe-Buglé Comarca to the east. The Río Sixaola forms part of the border with Costa Rica. An old railroad bridge spans the river between Guabito and Sixaola, Costa Rica. The bridge is a border crossing used by tourists going between destinations in Bocas and Costa Rica. The province contains two national parks: Isla Bastimentos National Marine Park and La Amistad International Park. The Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute operates a research station on Colón Island just northwest of Bocas Town. There are many banana plantations in Bocas del Toro, often called the oro verde or green gold of Central America.
Christopher Columbus explored here in 1502, while searching for the passage to the Pacific ocean. Columbus's original name for the island was Isla del Drago. In colonial times, Bocas del Toro was part of Veraguas. It was originally part of Costa Rica until, in one of the many territorial disputes, Colombia took control of it with armed forces. The then government made a reservation called Bocas del Toro in 1834. In 1850, Bocas del Toro became a part of Chiriqui, then was separated from it and became part of Colon. On November 16, 1903, Bocas del Toro was separated from Colon and became its own province. In 1941, Bocas del Toro was divided into 2 districts, Bocas del Toro and Crimamola. Four years later, it became into the same division as before. In 1970, Bocas del Toro district became Changuinola, eliminated the district Bastimentos and added three new districts to what it is today. The extensions of the districts changed in 1997 when the reservation Ngöbe Buglé Comarca was made.

I made this video while in the Bocas del Toro Islands, visiting Zapatilla Island on an excursion with Total Adventures. The tour included dolphin watching, snorkeling, a stop at Zapatilla Island, sloth watching and lunch on an overwater restaurant (separate bill). While in Bocas, we stayed at El Limbo hotel, which was under USD60/night and had hot water, air conditioner, refrigerator and a safe, and you can also upgrade to balcony ocean views. You can reserve a room at

History
The islands of Bocas del Toro are the essence and the mirror of Caribbean Panama. They are located in the extreme western part of the country, only 40 kilometers from the Republic of Costa Rica. This archipelago has the perfect combination of nature and historical and cultural traditions, with a charming variety of aquatic species, coral reefs, mangroves, tropical forest, beaches with crystal clear water, undisturbed jungles with all the flora and fauna you can imagine.
Without any doubt, the most famous visitor that arrived at this piece of paradise was the Admiral Christopher Columbus, the 6th of October of the year 1502 on his fourth and last trip. He entered with his two vessels into a wide bay that the indigenous people used to call Carabaro (nowadays called Almirante Bay), took in provisions on the present Bastimentos island and careened a ship in the vicinity of Carenero island. At the beginning of the 19th century, the brothers Snap arrived from Jamaica with their slaves , at the same time with the Shepherd family that inhabited Shepherd Island. A few years later various Scottish and English families emigrated from the San Andres and Providencia islands, also together with their slaves, in order to evade tax payments. An important commercial exchange started with the settled Indians of the region, the once that traded alive turtles, turtle shell, cocoa and mahogany, especially with the English people that came from Jamaica. For all of this, Bocas del Toro possesses a rich, ethnic culture that is reflected in its traditions, customs, gastronomy, music, dances and other afro- Antillean manifestations; combined with the indigenous culture that still stays intact and that leads us magically to the roots of the American continent.
Bocas del Toro; its name.
It is not known for certain where the name of this incredible, forgotten by time, comes from. Various attributions exist, one more interesting than the other. It is being said that Christopher Columbus when he landed at one of the paradisiacal beaches, saw various waterfalls in the form of bocas del toro (mouths of the bull).Wikipedia
