Visiting Blue Lake & Hiking the Lake Tarawera Trail | VAN LIFE NEW ZEALAND
On this weeks adventure, we visit some of the most beautiful lakes in New Zealand, and to be honest, the most picturesque lakes we’ve ever seen:
Blue Lake (Tikitapu)
Lake Tarawera
Blue Lake is a relatively small lake in the Nelson national park, located in the Northern reaches of New Zealand’s Southern Alps. The clarity of the water is reported to be the highest of any fresh water ever analysed. Under the right conditions, visibility ranges from 70-80 metres! We hiked the Blue Lake circuit, which is roughly 5.5km long, and was a great way for us to see the lake from all angles. With plenty of parking and a well signposted route, we highly we would highly recommend this experience. Also, if it’s a nice day, definitely bring swimming gear. Heaps of people were in the water having a grand old time.
Lake Tarawera is the largest of a series of lakes which surround the volcano Mount Tarawera in the North Island of New Zealand. Once devastated by the 1886 Tarawera eruption, the Tarawera Trail represents a return of the people to their land and the birthplace of tourism in New Zealand.
To start the trail, we hopped on a speedy water taxi, dropping us off at Hot Water Beach. The 30 minute boat ride was easily one of the highlights of this New Zealand trip so far. The lake is absolutely stunning and our guide, David, gave us some really interesting history about the volcanic activity in the area. The Tarawera Trail is 15km long and took us roughly 4 hours to complete. Overall, the trail wasn’t painfully difficult. There is a range of short climbs and descents, views of the lake and tramps through some dense bush. The thing that got us was the heat! Four hours exercise in the powerful New Zealand sun certainly let us know we’d put some work in that day.
To be honest, for anyone thinking of coming to New Zealand, these two hikes are well worth it, and we’d do them again in a heartbeat.
The water taxi company we used is called ‘Totally Tarawera’. They were absolutely great hosts and the extra information they gave us added a lot to the experience overall. Here’s a link to their website:
Hope you enjoy the video,

A Night at Tarawera
This short timelapse video is at one of my favourite locations and has been a few months in the making. Thanks to my family for all their support and to Adrian Hodge Photography for hanging out on most of these long cold nights.
All the sequences were shot on a Canon 6D and motion control was used with SYRP equipment.

The eruption of Mt Tarawera - Roadside Stories
'The sky was lit by great flashes of flame ...' The 1886 eruption of Mt Tarawera obliterated the spectacular Pink and White Terraces, one of the world's scenic wonders, and buried a number of villages. The disaster was heralded by an apparition of a ghostly canoe on Lake Tarawera.

Tarawera Trail :: Long White Gypsy
Clearly, I'm not the fittest or fastest hiker on the planet.
What I suspected would be a relatively easy day hike actually turned into a nightmarish 7 hour slog, almost entirely uphill. But don't be alarmed... My conclusion is that this is due in large part to hiker-error and not the trail itself, highlighting the importance of thoroughly conducting your research on the trail before you head out (and utilising handy videos like this one as a visual aid).
Classified by DOC as an Advanced tramping track, I should have known better really. The only other advanced tracks I have completed (the hikes to Mt Urchin and Tama Lakes) were substantially easier by comparison. For a start, they were completed in the time suggested on the DOC website. And whereas they did involve undulating or steep uphill slogs, they were manageable. By contrast, the Tarawera Trail sapped the life out of me piece by piece over a gruelling 7 hour day.
I thought I had familiarised myself with the trail before we left home. I thought I knew what to expect. I was wrong. If I had looked a little closer at the DOC brochure I would have seen a relief map of the trail, making it clear that a hike in the reverse direction (from Hot Water Beach) would involve much more in the way of ascents.
I would have also seen that there were no marked hot pools part-way along the trail. A brief side-trip we took as the result of an inkling I had (backed up by what I thought was reliable information from our boat operator) could easily have ended up in disaster when we lost the trail. I was surprised at how quickly panic set in. Thankfully, I managed to keep calm and navigate us back to safety ... but not without a healthy dose of humble pie.
I will leave a more detailed account of the trail in the blog post which goes along with this video.
For now, the biggest piece of advice I can give you on hiking the Tarawera Trail is to hike from the carpark to Hot Water Beach and catch the water taxi back to The Landing. You'll thank me for it later.

The most romantic tourist train on road today is the Hawkes Bay Express based in Napier New Zealand. It looks like the 1930's Orient Express steam trains that royalty, dignitaries and business owners used across continental Europe. The Oriental Express stood for luxury and style both fully replicated in the Hawkes Bay Express. As it has no need for rails and used for cruise ship excursions, Art Deco tours, weddings, corporate and private hire this luxurious tourist vehicle caters for all. Visit hbexpress.co.nz for more details.

Rotorua Redwoods WaiOTapu Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake)
what to do in Rotorua?
visit the link below to find out:-
The Redwoods is an amazing place, you can have a walk around the Redwoods, but we just took couple of photo and headed to the next destination.
The next stop is Wai-O-Tapu, an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, just north of the Reporoa caldera, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone. It is 27 kilometres south of Rotorua.
Lake Tikitapu or Blue Lake, is the smallest of four small lakes lying between Lake Rotorua and Lake Tarawera in the Bay of Plenty region of New Zealand's North Island. The others are Lake Rotokakahi, Lake Okareka, and Lake Okataina.
Blue Lake is so beautiful and peaceful place to visit, however you have to go to the opposite of the Blue Lake, like our video show in the last part, the front of blue lake is just look like a beach, but the opposite is totally different!
that's it for today, more video and blog coming soon !!

Two days in Rotorua, New Zealand
The geothermal wonderland that is Rotorua is known by many names. Officially nicknamed the “The Sulphur City” due to its unique aroma, more commonly as Rotovegas for its touristic nature or by the less kind-of-heart as Fartville”. It certainly has a unique place amongst the New Zealand landscape.
From bubbling mud pools to luxurious mud baths, Maori cultural experiences and adrenaline-fueled adventures you’ll never be bored.
No one should leave Rotorua without first experiencing the geothermal sites. These consist of well cordoned and guided paid sites to free hot pools in the city's parks and bush. Quite a sight (and smell) to behold. Places such as Te Puia and Te Whakarewarewa Thermal Reserve also offer traditional Maori cultural shows and art.
Another must do is taking the Skyline Gondola up Mount Ngongotaha then luging your way down. Pro tip, buy at least 3 luge rides - it can take a ride or two to get the hang of things. They have a few track options ranging from beginner to kamikaze, so choose wisely and work your way up.
Afterwards, the iconic Polynesian Spa in the town centre is a nice way to unwind and soak your pains away. Though there’s many spa options about so shop around for good deals.
A nice free attraction is the Redwood forest on the edge of town. There's a large selection of splendid walks amongst the massive Californian pines, some more than 100 years old.
Since you're on this side of town, a nice drive towards Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) and Lake Rotokakahi (Green Lake) will take you to the Buried Village. A remarkably well-preserved Maori village that was completely covered after a volcanic eruption in 1886. You can wander amongst the excavation site, enter traditional homes as they once stood.
Also check out The Landing Cafe on Lake Tarawera, great food that's away from the usual tourist traps of Rotorua city.
