Oamaru New Zealand
Enjoy a seal in the blue penguin colony of Oamaru New Zealand: an historic town of 13.000 on the way from Dunedin to Christchurch, filmed late afternoon before the return of the famous little blue penguins of Oamaru.
Oamaru is further known for its many white 19th Century buildings, the Oamaru garden and the nearby Totara estate. It's much nicer to visit than nearby Timaru (which just has a few motels to stay the night.)

New Nesters; Migrant Stories from the Waitaki District
New Nesters is a short documentary exploring the lives of newcomers to the Waitaki District, and Oamaru in particular. It deals with themes of acceptance, social anxiety, overcoming cultural barriers, and the hope of creating a new life for themselves and their families.
This film was produced by Maria Buldain and made by local film makers Gamel O'Brien and Bridget Ellis, in association with the Waitaki and New Zealand Multicultural Councils, Safer Waitaki, Etu Whanau and Waitaki Migrants Meet and Share. It was first shown at a public screening during Mental Health Awareness Week 2018 at the Oamaru Public Library.
Please feel free to share this film with your friends and family, as Maria's intention was for this project to be used as a tool for communication, celebrating diversity and building new understanding about the hardships of moving to a new place.

-- About this video --
Today we are starting our Waitaki Valley adventure starting in the town of Oamaru! We get some much needed road trip snacks at the candy outlet store before hitting the road to the Waitaki Valley, otherwise known as the Vanished World Trail.
First stop on our Vanished World Trail itinerary is the Vanished World Centre in Duntroon. This is a small museum of the fossils and bones found in the Waitaki Valley. We see prehistoric penguins bones, shark-tooth dolphins, whale fossils, moa bones and much more!
Then we move onto the Maori Rock Art, a historical site where early Maori painted drawings into the walls. The Maori Rock Art in the Waitaki Valley is a great example of authentic Maori history.
Next up is the Elephant Rocks in the Waitaki Valley! These weathered limestone outcrops in a grassy field come in all shapes and sizes making some incredible photo opportunities. The Elephant Rocks in New Zealand are some awesome rock formations.
Our final destination today is Omarama! So what do you think of this Waitaki Valley road trip? Would you add it to your South Island travel itinerary? LUK in the comments!
