Japan's Crazy Desert Revealed: Tottori Sand Dune Adventure ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Yes, Japan has a desert compete with camels, sane dunes and ... a world class art museum with sand sculptures! This time, John heads to this barren wasteland devoid of vending machines for a taste of the Sahara – in Japan.
100,000 years ago, this area turned into a desert because sand flew in from the sea accumulating over many millennia. The result is a 16 km by 2 km wide desert that was growing until about 50 years ago when the city residents decided enough was enough.
MORE HISTORY:
After World War 2, a barricade was built to prevent tsunami and residents planted trees to stop the desertification. Now the desert area is shrinking and because of its uniqueness and lure for domestic and international tourism, the residents no longer want to stop it. In fact, 6000 volunteers in 2015 come out every few months to put pull out the vegetation all in the name of ecology!
History and problems aside, this place rocks!
50 meter high sand dunes overlook the beautiful Sea of Japan to the horizon.
THE SAND MUSEUM:
I didn't just come here for the sand dunes.
The SAND MUSEUM is a world class art museum produced by Chaen Katsuhiko who tells us his story and the reason why the Tottori Sand Dunes are so special in the world today.
Indeed, it's become a center of sand sculpting with a massive indoor enclosure housing dozens of sand sculpture displays created by guest artists from around the world and a place of pride for the city to Tottori.
Every year THE SAND MUSEUM has a major theme with new designs, reusing the sand to make a new world for visitors. This year's theme is South America and it's history with a special emphasis on Rio DeJanaro which hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Within Japan the city is best known for its sand dunes which are a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from outside of the prefecture. SWELL Sculpture Festival_2019
SWELL presents high quality outdoor art and cultural events, connecting people, art and place.
Our signature event is the SWELL Sculpture Festival held annually on Currumbin Beach in early September. Now in its seventeenth year, the ten-day festival brings up to 50 works by nationally and internationally renowned artists to a free public exhibition on the beautiful beaches of Australia’s Gold Coast. The event delights 275,000 visitors annually and also inspires with master classes, art activities for children, sculpture workshops and a music stage showcasing the local music scene.
The festival is now an established part of the Gold Coast’s identity, its whimsical diversity and sharp comment contributing significantly to the region’s cultural and artistic spirit. Year round, SWELL undertakes curated programming with artist residencies, installations and activation elsewhere throughout the Gold Coast and beyond. Through a high-level curatorial approach we coordinate and host new and exciting recognised national and international artists for exhibitions, the creation of stand alone public art or rejuvenation of spaces, to attract substantial audience engagement and artistic inspiration.
SWELL also contributes to arts and cultural education training and development through mentorship for emerging artists, indigenous artists, children and young people and involves tertiary students in real world learning experiences. Guided by a board of directors, SWELL is led by Natasha Edwards and Dee Steinfort and is a not-for-profit organisation with DGR and TCC status. SWELL is committed to supporting the growth of artists by showcasing and promoting their work. Through our work we celebrate and engage with the natural and cultural heritage and landscape around us, while aiming to create joyful leisure time with artistic experiences. Our desire is to strengthen the community spirit and identity of the Gold Coast in all we do.

Japan's Most Terrifying Bridge: Eshima Ohashi ★ ONLY in JAPAN #33
It's been nicknamed the ROLLER COASTER BRIDGE because of it's super steep slope and appearance of being a bridge to the sky.
That's the Eshima Ohashi Bridge straddling Shimane and Tottori prefecture in Japan.
Facts about the Eshima Ohashi:
★ 1,446 meters long
★ 250 meters of continupus concrete in the center (the third longest Ramen bridge in the world!)
★ 6.1% grade slope on the Shimane Prefecture side
★ 5.1% grade on the Tottori side
★ The bridge needed to be high in the center to allow large shops to pass under.
☆ From the Shimane side, you can get the optical illusion view at the end of the street by the sea.
☆ If you have a good telephoto lens, go even further to the other side of the sea for a better shot. (Map below)
The bridge has a good pedestrian footpath on both sides of the road.
Bicycles are not allowed on the footpath so stay on the main road with the car, to the left side.
There is an observation point on the top that offers sweeping views all the way to Daisen (mountain).
The closest major access point is Yonago Station and airport on the Sea of Japan. From there, take a train to Sakaiminato and rent a bicycle or grab a taxi.
Sakaiminato is also famous for Japanese anime and the main street is like a museum of monsters!
The bridge is a 20 minute ride from Sakai Minato.
Take food with you from the station.

Volcano Hiking Adventure | Kagoshima Sakurajima ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Start your year with -- a VOLCANIC EXPLOSION! Japan's most active volcano is also a great place for lava trail hiking, hot spring bathing and pure adventure.
Where is this magical volcano you ask? It's down on Kyushu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture (1,300km from Tokyo) and that ash and fire throwing cone is SAKURAJIMA!
You can get there by ferry in 15 minutes from the city center for a ridiculous 180 yen / $1.50, about 4km across the sea.
Sakurajima is famous for island mikan, much smaller and sweeter than on the mainland. The Sakurajima DAIKON RADISH which can weigh as much as 45kg is also well known. It's the biggest radish in the world. (Are you excited yet?)
If radishes aren't enough, there's that LAVA TRAIL and loads of paths for bicycling. Not far away are sea view onsen baths where you can soak up those minerals and long views across the sea.
The Sakurajima Visitor's Center is the place to start your adventure.
Inside, data on the island's volcanic activity and history is all documented with diagrams and videos. There's also a gift shop with some cool things to buy.
I went in the off season (January) but that shouldn't stop you from visiting. It just means you get the whole place to yourself.
The population on Sakurajima is quite old. I met a 97 year old woman who was walking around just fine. She was half my size but seemed to have twice my energy so I think there's something truly magical about this island. I hope some of that magic rubs off onto you as well.
HOW TO GET THE SAKURAJIMA:
It's a 90-115 minute flight from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita Airport)
or a 7 hour trip on the Shinkansen. Great if you have a JR Rail Pass!
Buses depart regularly from Kagoshima Airport to the city center where you can either grab a taxi to the ferry terminal or a bus from Chuo-Kagoshima Station. It's a short ride.
THE SAKURAJIMA FERRY:
It's 24 hours, departing every 15-20 minutes.
Adults: 180 yen ($1.50)
Child: 90 Yen ($0.75)
Ferry Schedule and Guide:
Try a bowl of udon or soba on board for 480 yen!

Clean Fukuoka beach survey, Fukuoka, Japan, September 1991
This clip features the first Clean Fukuoka beach survey organized by the Center for Marine Conservation (CMC) out of San Francisco, now named The Ocean Conservancy. The survey was instrumental in extrapolating the impact of river and ocean borne trash on Japan's beaches, and eventually help lead to changes in how local and national government dealt with the issue.
Clean Fukuoka had just finshed its second prefecture-wide beach clean up of Hakata-wan and the Genkai-nada, with over 7,000 participants. Featured in the clip are students from Kyushu University, local Boy Scouts, the Tsuri-kai, some English students and ESL staff.
The survey, or chosa in Japanese, took place at Nishi-no-Ura, on the border of Fukuoka-shi and Itoshima-gun. The otsukare party is at Sunset Beach, one beach west of the survey spot, an absolute must-visit watering hole if you ever stray in those contrays.
Clean Fukuoka helped establish Love Earth Clean Up Kyushu, a larger island-wide organization, which incorporated all seven prefectures and Okinawa and drew over 250,000 so called 'Gommi Busters' in 1992. Today the annual beach clean has spread to over 20 prefectures, parts of Korea, Shanghai, and enjoys over a million participants. It is rumored to be the largest environmental event in Asia.
The opening shot is of a children's book written about this subject by Tomonari Tsuneo, the Fukuoka City liason to Clean Fukuoka. It is titled kono gommi doko kara kitan daro, or where did this trash come from.

New Way To Study Japanese!
Future courses updated here or on Instagram:
I am so excited to finally be able to announce this project to you guys!
This project is built with my love hehe it's a language school and course that I wish existed when I was studying Japanese..
We have combined language with culture and experience.
Learning the language is not enough, you need to immerse yourself in the culture to understand the language better and what better way to do that than in the Japanese countryside?
There are so many people who study in the big cities, but they don't get to experience this deeper side to Japan and tend to survive without speaking Japanese in their daily lives.
Being in the Japanese countryside and doing the activities included in the course, it forces you to get out of your comfort zone and practice what you learn in class in a real life setting.
My experience in the countryside of Japan changed my life and it's brought me to where I am today so I hope letting more people experience the countryside will also bring some value to them in one way or another :)
Hope to see some of you at the course!
