Japan's Crazy Desert Revealed: Tottori Sand Dune Adventure ★ ONLY in JAPAN
Yes, Japan has a desert compete with camels, sane dunes and ... a world class art museum with sand sculptures! This time, John heads to this barren wasteland devoid of vending machines for a taste of the Sahara – in Japan.
100,000 years ago, this area turned into a desert because sand flew in from the sea accumulating over many millennia. The result is a 16 km by 2 km wide desert that was growing until about 50 years ago when the city residents decided enough was enough.
MORE HISTORY:
After World War 2, a barricade was built to prevent tsunami and residents planted trees to stop the desertification. Now the desert area is shrinking and because of its uniqueness and lure for domestic and international tourism, the residents no longer want to stop it. In fact, 6000 volunteers in 2015 come out every few months to put pull out the vegetation all in the name of ecology!
History and problems aside, this place rocks!
50 meter high sand dunes overlook the beautiful Sea of Japan to the horizon.
THE SAND MUSEUM:
I didn't just come here for the sand dunes.
The SAND MUSEUM is a world class art museum produced by Chaen Katsuhiko who tells us his story and the reason why the Tottori Sand Dunes are so special in the world today.
Indeed, it's become a center of sand sculpting with a massive indoor enclosure housing dozens of sand sculpture displays created by guest artists from around the world and a place of pride for the city to Tottori.
Every year THE SAND MUSEUM has a major theme with new designs, reusing the sand to make a new world for visitors. This year's theme is South America and it's history with a special emphasis on Rio DeJanaro which hosted the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Hi everyone! In today’s video I have a special vlog! My boyfriend and I went to Tottori prefecture to visit its famous Sand Dunes and Sand Museum! I was really amazed when I got to see it up close! It was a bit unfortunate that we were only able to stay for a day. There’s still so much more to explore in Tottori! It really is a hidden gem in Japan! We’ll surely be back!
How about you? Any comments about Tottori upon seeing the video? Leave your comments below! ☺️❤️

Tottori Sand Dunes to Takamatsu - Japan Road Trip Day 1 (July 2018) - Adventure Vlog #10 (Ep. 17)
Hey guys,
こんにちは
It took us so long to upload our first video, but it should speed up from now on. We simply took waaaaay to many videos on our trip. This is also to date our longest video ... We hope you guys don't mind!
大分時間が掛ってしまいましたが、これからスピードアップしていきたいと思います。単純に、ビデオの量が多すぎて編集に時間がかかっていました。今までで一番時間の長いビデオになります。飽きずに最後までみていただけると嬉しいです。
On our first day we went all the way from Bangkok to Osaka to Tottori and then Takamatsu ... everything according to plan! It was great and we recommend you to go there to if you have the chance!
旅行初日は、バンコクから大阪、鳥取そして高松を移動しました。すべて計画通り!鳥取、高松ともに良い経験ができました。お時間があればぜひ行ってみてください。
What do you think about our double subtitles? Unfortunately sometimes the wind, bus or cicada are very loud and we decided to use both language subtitles ... should we make this a thing? Leave us a comment below!
字幕を英語と日本語両方つけましたがどうでしょうか。風が強かったり、セミがうるさかったりで両方つけることにしました。何かアドバイス、コメント等があればぜひお願いします。
Cheers,
Hako & Jonathan

Tottori, Sand Dunes, Yokai at Sakaiminato, Mt. Daisen Area
Tottori Prefecture is located in the west side of Japan's main Honshu Island, facing the Japan Sea. The most famous place in Tottori is the Tottori Sand Dunes. But there are many other attractive places in Tottori, such as Sakaiminato and Mt. Daisen Area.
My channel, Japan Silhouette, features beautiful scenery, traditional culture, Origami arrangement, and the warm heart of the Japanese people.
I also visit other countries and record my impression about them, perhaps from a Japanese perspective.

Japan's Least Populated Prefecture | Tottori Prefecture Travel Guide
Tottori Prefecture is a hidden gem of Japan and an off the beaten path place to visit but it's definitely one of my top 3 favourite prefectures in Japan!!! I can't wait to share with you what I did in Tottori Prefecture in 4 days and just how underrated this place is.... :(
You can get to Tottori easily via direct flights from Tokyo(Haneda or Narita Airport), direct buses depart from all over Japan's major cities and of course you can take the limited express train (Super Hakuta) from many areas such as Kyoto and Osaka.
Here are the places I visited in the video:

Tottori Sand Dunes ① @ Tottori, Japan
A Day to Sand Dunes in Tottori Japan
The Tottori Sand Dune is a must for any visitor to Tottori. Located in the heart of the San’in Kaigan Geopark and stretching 2.4km north to south and 16km east to west, it is one of the finest coastal sand dunes in the country. The ripples swept in the sand by the winds of the Sea of Japan are a constant delight to visitors. The small hill known as Umanose (‘the horse’s back’) offers a picturesque panorama of the ocean. And you must visit the Tottori sand museum. All structures are done by sand
Tottori Sand Dune Chairlift (Tottori, Japan) Jun-2017
Tottori is located on the south western coast of Japan's Honshu island, facing the Sea of Japan. The city is most famous for having the largest sand dunes in the country, with tonnes of tourist visiting it every year.
Next to the sand dunes is a viewing platform perched on a nearby hill, offering excellent views of the coastline. The viewing platform and sand dunes are linked by a chairlift service.
Tottori Sand Dunes is a relatively short (~20-30minutes) bus ride from Tottori JR Station.
