Saddle under Jabal Toubkal, Atlas, Marocco
Filmed on 29 April, 2009 in the saddle under Jabal Toubkal (4 167m) on the way to its the very summit.
Great climb! The altitude has already been visible :-)
Jebel Toubkal (Tubqal) is a mountain peak in southwestern Morocco, located in the Toubkal National Park. At 4,167 metres, it is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains and in North Africa. It is located 63 km south of the city of Marrakech, in the Toubkal National Park. The first ascent by Europeans was on 12 June 1923 by the Marquis de Segonzac, Vincent Berger and Hubert Dolbeau, but the mountain may have been climbed before that date.
Trekkers usually approach the mountain from the road-end village of Imlil. Qualified local guides can be hired, as well as mules and porters, to carry equipment and food supplies higher into the mountains. For experienced mountaineers, guides are not required for the normal route, as it is an easy hike and orientation is not a problem. Usage of the mules is questionable, as they are often overloaded and mistreated, and there is no need to carry food or tents if staying in the refuge.
The normal route starts with an easy walk to the village of Aroumd. Past Aroumd a floodplain is crossed and the route follows the left slope of the valley southwards. The valley bends to the east to the tiny settlement of Sidi Chamharouch, which has grown around a Muslim shrine. At Sidi Chamharouch, the path leads over the stream and runs steeply uphill to the right side of the Isougouane valley, which leads to two stone-built refuges (old Neltner Refuge and new Refuge du Toubkal) that are often used as base camp at 3,207 m (10,522 ft). It is possible to buy good meals in the Refuge du Toubkal. Tents can be pitched near the refuges for a small charge.
From that point a path crosses the stream, climbs a steep scree slope to the east and enters a valley (corrie), then climbs another steep slope to reach a col (Tizi'n'Toubkal at 3,940m). At the col the route turns left (northwards) to the summit ridge of Jbel Toubkal. The 4,167m summit is crowned with a curious pyramidal metal frame and views take in most of the Atlas and Anti-Atlas Mountains.
The ascent during the summer (from May) is non-technical and easy, only complicated by steep and slippery scree slopes and altitude sickness. Sturdy boots and proper (windproof) clothing are required, and trekking poles are helpful on the scree. An ice-axe may be needed on the remaining snowfields in the early summer.
It is possible to climb the mountain in two days - first day up to the refuge (around seven hours without mules), second day to the summit (around five hours) and back to Imlil (up to five hours).
In summer the mountains can be very dry, but are sometimes subject to storms. Although the temperature should remain above zero during the day, freezing conditions are possible over 3,500m. In winter the mountains are covered in snow and ice, and can be prone to avalanches. Skiing is possible as the snow can lie to considerable depth and cover many rocky slopes. Information about state of the route can be obtained at Marrakech tourist offices or at Imlil.

Hiking Toubkal 2017
Mount Toubkal, Morocco - August 2017
Hiking through the Altas Mountains to climb North Africa's Highest Peak, Mount Toubkal (4167 Metres). The tour group I did this trip with was Exodus Travels.
Jubel Toubkal Morocco and Marrakesh
A group of us headed to Morocco to climb Mt Toubkal from Imlil.
Visiting Marrakesh afterward for a few days to chill and recover.
The whole experience was amazing and hope this inspires you to visit Morocco.
Video filmed by Mark who was in the group but not on YouTube.
We flew into Morrocco from Luton London to Marrakesh but left Manchester at midnight for the early flight at 6am from Luton and arrived 10.30am local time. I arranged the whole trip for my friends, the same friends who came to Keswick, Lake District in September for a practice hike up Blencathra. We arrived in Marrakesh and was collected by taxi and headed to Imlil which was in the Atlas Mountains and our start point for the two-day trek to the top of Mt Toubkal. We stayed the night in Imlil and while we relaxed in the setting sun we took in our first glimpse of the mountain range which was gorgeous. The weather was about 29 degrees at ground level but summit forecast of -1/-3. Due to changes by the government, we had to pay for a guide to take us to the top but I'd already planned the route and did my research as the route isn't exactly difficult and it does follow a route all the way up to the refuge. The first day took 8 hours to reach the refuge but we did stop for lunch in a village called Sidi Chamarouch at 2335m. Once we reached the CAF refuge at 3207m it was time for some tagine, Morrocan tea and get used to the altitude. We managed to get to bed for 10am as the alarms were set for 3am for breakfast and leave at 3.30am so we could have a chance seeing the sunrise over the Atlas mountains when we get to the top.
We left on time and straight away we were hit with the steep ground and the path changed to rocks and loose scree. We all used head torches to see as it was pitch black and it was great to see the stars in the African sky when we turned them off while resting and getting rid of the altitude head rushes. We took it slow and steady and making sure all was okay with our health. I have to admit, I wasn't expecting the altitude to kick in like it did. Our guide welcomed us at the top with a few others that made it up there before us and the view was stunning. It was cold with light wind but after 20 minutes taking our shots and videos we then headed back down as Adam in the group was struggling with circulation in his hands so we quickly went down out of the cold wind and tried to warm up quickly.
We headed back to the refuge to recharge with some snacks and tea, then got ready again to head all the way back down to Imlil then headed to Marrakesh for the evening to relax in our city centre Riad and explored the City the next day and chilled on the Riad rooftop in the sun while re rested our legs next to the pool.
It was a great experience and another crack at another Europe mountain. I enjoyed that much I think i've found my location to heap lead some groups here for practice for my ML since we have to have a guide as well. I can put my skills into practice with Mt Toubkal if I get any more friends to hike this mountain.
2019 06 22 Morocco - Toubkal National Park
The Berber hilltop village called Aroumd is great target for half day trek from Imlil and back. It is also good starting point for two day trek to the top of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's tallest peak, but we do not have enough time to get it done - maybe next time...
The trek from Imlil is uphill all the way, with little shade via stony valley where mule carry stuff up and down the well defined trial.
Aroumd village sits 1900m above sea level and has population just below 2000 people which makes it the largest village in Mizane Valley. It is extraordinary looking place, built on a huge moraine spur above the valley. Steep-tiered fields of potatoes, onions, barley and various kinds of fruit line the valley sides, their terraces edged with purple iris. Berbers are friendly and kids are keen to look at the camera and chat a bit, even when we speak only English and they Moroccan.
