Geylang Serai Info:
Geylang (Chinese: 芽笼, Tamil: கேலாங்) is a planning area and township located on the eastern fringe of the Central Region of Singapore, bordering Hougang and Toa Payoh in the north, Marine Parade in the south, Bedok in the east, and Kallang in the west.
Geylang is known perhaps most infamously as a red-light district, particularly the areas along Geylang Road. Geylang is also where one of Singapore's oldest Malay settlements, Geylang Serai, is located.
The word Geylang is found early in Singapore's history and also in early topographical maps showing marsh and coconut plantations beside and adjacent to the mouth of the Kallang River, home to the Orang Laut (sea gypsies). One possible etymological link in the stock vocabulary of the Malay is geylanggan meaning to twist or crush a reference to the process of extracting the coconut meat and milk used by the locals to thicken curries in Malay-Chinese (Peranakan) cuisine. The word Geylang may be derived from a corrupted spelling of the Malay word gelang which is a type of edible creeper (Portulaca oleracea). This is a more plausible explanation for the name because Malays typically name places based on the abundance of certain plant species (e.g. Melaka after the tree species of the same name) or geological formations (e.g. Bukit Gombak based on the comb-like hill summit).

Hougang Singapore Info:
Hougang (Chinese: 后港) is a planning area and mature residential town located in the North-East Region of Singapore. The town is the most populous in the region, being home to 247,528 residents as of 2018. Hougang planning area is bordered by Sengkang to the north, Geylang and Serangoon to the south, Bedok to the southeast, Toa Payoh to the southwest, Paya Lebar to the east, Ang Mo Kio to the west and Bishan to the northwest.
Hougang is the pinyin version of Aū-káng, a Hokkien and Teochew name meaning river end, as Hougang is located upstream or at the back of Sungei Serangoon. In the past, the name connoted the area stretching from the fifth milestone junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Upper Paya Lebar Road/Boundary Road to the seventh and a half milestone junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Punggol Road. The area just beyond the seventh milestone along Punggol Road was formerly considered part of Punggol but is now within Hougang Town and that section of Punggol Road is now Hougang Avenue 8, with Punggol Road starting further north.
Pig farming was carried out in Punggol, including the area of Punggol that is now part of Hougang Town. The last of these pig farmers were relocated by the late-1990s to flats built in Hougang. Today, Hougang is an HDB new town with over 40,000 housing units interspersed with pockets of private residential areas.
There was also a fishing port at the end of Upper Serangoon Road beyond the seventh milestone.
At Hougang Street 21, there was a well that is still identified as the tua jia kha (大井脚) well structure. This well-identified the Teochew village of tua jia kha which means the foot of a big well. In the past, the village was a popular place for food, street wayangs, itinerant Chinese medicine men and story tellers spinning yarns.

Serangoon Info:
Serangoon is a planning area and residential town located in the North-East Region of Singapore.
Serangoon is bordered by these planning areas – Sengkang to the north, Hougang to the east, Ang Mo Kio and Bishan to the west, as well as Toa Payoh to the south. Serangoon planning area has a total of seven subzones: Serangoon Central, Lorong Chuan, Upper Paya Lebar, Serangoon Garden, Serangoon North, Seletar Hills and Serangoon North Industrial Estate
Tamil Muslim traders from India pioneered the settlement of Serangoon in the early 19th century. Serangoon Road was first identified as a bridle path in 1821, and by 1822 it had reached the present Woodsville Corner. A road was proposed in 1822 and by 1827, the road reached Sungei Serangoon (Malay for Serangoon River).
It is difficult to say what the word Serangoon actually means. The etymology of the word is uncertain. The most plausible view holds that it was derived from a small marsh bird, the burong ranggong in Malay, which was common in the swamps of Sungei Serangoon (formerly the Rangon River). It had a black back, white breast, long, sharp bill, grey crest, long neck, and unwebbed feet.
On the early maps of Singapore, the name of the area is called Seranggong. Se is short for satu, or one, in Malay. An alternative derivation is offered by Haji Sidek, an amateur etymologist interested in Malay place names, who speculates that the name Serangoon is derived from the Malay words diserang dengan gong, which means to be attacked by gongs and drums. According to Haji Sidek, people used to go to Benut in Johore through the Serangoon area and had to use gongs to frighten off wild animals and snakes which used to roam the jungle covered area. Serang dengan gong gradually became Serangoon over the years.
Siddique and Puru Shotam, however, argue that such as derivation meant that the name developed after the road, which is inconsistent with the fact that the term ranggong predates the development of the road.
In the 1828 Franklin and Jackson's Plan of Singapore, there are three references to Rangung: Tanjong Rangung, the River Rangung and the Island Rangung. In Coleman's 1836 Map of Singapore, the names Tanjong Rangon and Rangon River can already be found. Rangong in Malay means warped or shrunken, as of the plane of a wall, roof or decking. It is evident that the road cut from Selegi was named by the early references to Rangung in the north-east of the island – one road linking the swamp bird area of ranggong – hence Serangoon.
The northern tip of Serangoon Road is known as nan sheng hua yuen pien (南生花園邊), or fringe of garden in the south, which referred to the Chinese vegetable gardens in the Bendemeer area. This general area was also termed mang chai chiao (feet of the jackfruit) because of the many jackfruit trees which grew there. The Hokkien Chinese name for Serangoon Road was au kang in, meaning back creek. The Chinese refer to Serangoon Garden as ang sali.
The main occupants of the area were, however, the Indian community. Indians congregated here from 1826 to work in the brick kilns செங்கல் சூளை and cattle industries situated here. The kilns were discontinued in 1860 and the cattle sheds were removed by the municipality in 1936. The area, however, remains predominantly Indian and today is known as Little India, லிட்டில் இந்தியா the locus of Singapore Indian retailing, everyday culture and festivities.
The Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple ஸ்ரீ வீரமாகாளியம்மன் கோயில் on Serangoon Road built more than a century ago went under rebuilding for three years (1984–1987) costing S$2.2 million. Consecration ceremony of the new temple took place on 8 February 1987.
Development of Serangoon New Town began in 1982, with the first few HDB flats being built as Neighbourhood 3 and as a portion of Neighbourhood 2. Subsequently, Serangoon Central started development in 1984 and was completed in 1989.

Changi Village Info:
Changi Village is a modern village situated at the northern tip of Changi which is at the eastern end of Singapore. It is the connecting point for travellers heading to Pulau Ubin or Malaysia by ferry. Nearby Changi Village are resorts and leisure facilities that cater a weekend getaway for many Singaporeans.
Changi Village has its early beginnings as a kampong village. The place was first redeveloped by the British as a summer house and a getaway location from the city centre of Singapore and was prized for its tranquillity and remoteness.
In the 1920s, the British started building up Changi as tension across Asia and Europe started to build anticipation for war. The infamous Changi Naval Base and old Changi Hospital were built there as a result. During World War II, the place saw mass mobilisation of Allied troops in anticipation of the possible landing and invasion by the Imperial Japanese troops who landed on the nearby Pulau Ubin. However, the manoeuvre by the Japanese was a bluff, who proceeded to invade from the west of Singapore.
After the defeat of the British, Changi Beach was one of the many sites of the infamous Sook Ching massacre. After the war, the British rebuilt the area to become both a resort and an accommodation for ANZUK soldiers and their families as they continued to maintain military facilities in the nearby Changi Camp.
In the 1970s, after the independence of Singapore, the land around Changi was redeveloped for the construction of the Changi Airport. The HDB started building low-rise flats at Changi Village after the land clearance. Changi Village was spruced up and amenities like the bus terminal were built. In 1997 the operations of the old Changi Hospital was moved to the new Changi General Hospital at Simei.
Changi Village is currently a hub for recreational activities. Despite the recent redevelopments, Changi Village continues to be relatively laid back compared to the rest of Singapore
