Places to see in ( La Rochelle - France ) Tour Saint Nicolas
The Saint-Nicolas tower ( xiv th century ) is, with the Tour de la Chaîne and the Tour de la Lanterne , one of the three towers of the seafront of La Rochelle , and one of the two iconic towers of Old Port , of which it constitutes the majestic door of entrance. For five centuries it provided for the defense of the pass and served as a point of attachment to the chain, stretched from the other side, and used to prohibit access to the port. It was classified as a historic monument by decree of 17 February 1879.
The legend lends to the fairy Mélusine , the construction of the tower Saint-Nicolas. The construction of the tower begins, according to the sources, around 1345. A few years after the tower Saint-Nicolas, the tower of the Chain is built on the other bank. It is so named because it has the function of tending the chain fixed in the Saint-Nicolas tower and closing the access to the port. The two towers become emblematic of the Old Port of La Rochelle, of which they constitute the majestic gateway.
In 1649 , the Count of Daugnon (or Doignon), royal governor of Aunis and the islands, ranks on the side of the slingers . The count had formed a small army through taxes on salt and ransomed farmers and merchants. The city is devoid of fortification from the great siege , with the exception of the seafront. The count decides to make turns his safety net.
From 1569 , and more widely during the xvi th century and the xvii th century , the tower serves to occasionally armory of Powder and jail during the religious wars : the Huguenots were imprisoned there between 1682 and 1686 , at the time of the revocation of the Edict of Nantes . During the French Revolution , the tower was used (until 1793 ) to imprison Chouans .
Although Juste Lisch's proposal to use the tower rooms as the Archeology Museum was rejected by the military engineers , the tower is visitable all year round. The three towers of La Rochelle welcomed in 2011 nearly 121,523 visitors.

The tower of the lantern ( xv th century ) is, with the Saint-Nicolas tower and the tower of the Channel , one of the three towers of the seafront La Rochelle , remains of medieval fortifications that protected the harbor. It is also known as Garrot Tower , Priests ' Tower and Four Sergeants' Tower . It has been classified as a historical monument on February 17 , 1879.
An order of the body of the city dating from 1209 already mentions the existence of a tower of the Chain, having no connection with the current tower of the Chain , but having the same function. Indeed, this one then barred the entry of the primitive harbor of La Rochelle located on the brook of Lafond, and was later denominated tower of the Garrot of the name of the lifting apparatus which served to disarm the ships before that they can enter the port. The tower captain was designated as the disarmer of the naves .
The oldest was Garrot Tower. According to some sources, the ships were disarmed upon arrival. A machine at the tower of the Lantern allowed to garrotter the guns and to remove them from the boats which could thus enter the harbor without risk for the city.
In 1568 , in order to strengthen the walls, the churches were destroyed. Catholics flee from the walls, but 13 priests are arrested and locked in the tower. They will be slaughtered and thrown into the sea from the top of the tower the following weeks. The tower then took the nickname of Tower of the Priests. Nickname which was reinforced after the slaughter of four other priests by the crowd, March 21, 1798 .
Finally, in 1822 , two of the protagonists of the Conspiracy of La Rochelle were locked in the tower before being executed in Paris with two others, on September 21, 1822. The tower then took the nickname of tour of the Four Sergeants.
The tower of Lantern has a height of 55 meters , it consists of two parts. Its base is a cylinder 25 meters high and more than 15 meters in diameter, overhung by an octagonal arrow, four of the eight sides are pierced with three- lobed windows flamboyant style. Each rib is furnished with hooks.

La Rochelle is a coastal city in southwestern France and capital of the Charente-Maritime department. It's been a center for fishing and trade since the 12th century, a maritime tradition that's reflected in its Vieux Port (old harbor) and huge, modern Les Minimes marina. The old town has half-timbered medieval houses and Renaissance architecture, including passageways covered by 17th-century arches.
Known as La Ville Blanche (the White City), La Rochelle's luminous limestone façades glow in the bright coastal sunlight. One of France's foremost seaports from the 14th to 17th centuries, the city has arcaded walkways, half-timbered houses (protected from the salt air by slate tiles), ghoulish gargoyles and a fabulous collection of lighthouses – all rich reminders of its magnificent seafaring heritage. The early French settlers of Canada, including the founders of Montreal, set sail from here in the 17th century.
This 'white city' is also commendably green, with innovative public transport, open spaces and plenty of activities and attractions for families visiting with children. La Rochelle's late-20th-century district of Les Minimes was built on reclaimed land, and now has one of the largest marinas in the country. Unlike the Med with its motor cruisers, the 3500 moorings here are mostly used by yachts, which fill the harbour with billowing spinnakers.
The Old Port (Vieux Port) is the oldest and most picturesque part of La Rochelle, dominated by its defensive towers. If a party of enormous chess pieces came down to the seaside and got tipsy, they would resemble these 14th / 15th C towers. Tour de la Chaine and Tour St Nicholas lean over the narrow harbour entrance: a stout chain was raised between them to keep out trouble (often English). A rampart stretches west to Tour de la Lanterne, the former lighthouse.
Musée du Nouveau Monde (New World Museum) housed in the old Fleuriau Hotel, depicts La Rochelle's relationship with the Americas, especially Maritime Canada and the French Caribbean. Port des Minimes is one of the biggest pleasure boat marinas in Europe: mostly yachts not motorboats. Also, visit the nearby beach.
Musée Maritime (Maritime Museum), Place Bernard Moitessier and Aquarium de La Rochelle (La Rochelle Aquarium), Quai Louis Prunier (near railway station just south of old port). Île de Ré resort island is accessed along Route D735 via a 2 km long toll-bridge. The toll to get onto the island is €16 per car in summer and €8 in winter, free on foot or with a bike; there's no return toll. The road runs through La Flotte to the main settlement of St Martin de Ré, which has a charming port (UNESCO Heritage Site) fortified by Vauban. Most buses terminate here. The road straggles on for another 20 km to Les Portes-en-Ré.
Situated near the Old Port, you can buy fresh products every morning in the central covered Market. On Wednesday and Saturdays (and during most of the summer), you will see all of the streets surounding the main area covered in stands occupied by local farmers selling their products. You will find dozens of restaurants surrounding this hot spot, and from the market, you can go in direction of the Place de Verdun or the Old Port and will walk by the main shopping streets of La Rochelle. The sector of Les Minimes is where you will find most activities that are not specifically targeted to tourists, such as bowling, movie theaters, etc.

The Old Port is the oldest port of La Rochelle and the historic heart of this city of Charente-Maritime ( New Aquitaine ). The tower of the chain and the tower Saint Nicolas keep the entrance of this medieval port. It was thanks to this port that La Rochelle gained importance during the Hundred Years War , then with the discovery of America. In the xvii th and xviii th centuries, the Old Port of La Rochelle has attracted more than half of colonial trade to New France , which makes today a place of pilgrimage for many tourists.
The access channel to the Old Port is dredged to the coast -0.50 meter from the Richelieu Tower. It is at the Old Port of La Rochelle that the Marans Canal ends at La Rochelle. The primitive port of La Rochelle was located on the river Lafond, up to the castle Vauclair (currently Place de Verdun). This port was quickly saturated and victim of its defects (low draft, access and difficult maneuver, siltation), it no longer responded to the increase in capacity of ships and cargo (wine and salt). The port entrance was defended by the lantern tower
During the surrender of the city, following the episode of the great siege , Louis XIII ordered the demolition of all the fortifications except the seafront. In April 1689, La Rochelle , stripped of its fortifications on the ground, is vulnerable to an attack from the enemies that King Louis XIV had leagued against him. To avoid danger, the King's council, undoubtedly under the influence of Louvois, finds no better remedy than to shave La Rochelle and fill his port. Fortunately for the city, the Marshal de Lorges , to whom the king had entrusted the command of the coasts between the Loire and the Garonne, seconded by François Ferry , general engineer of the provinces between the Loire and the Pyrenees, protested against this wild project, in pledging to put La Rochelle in a state of defense in a short time and without major expenses.
The old port has twice hosted an extreme diving competition. The event brought together more than 40,000 spectators at the foot of the building in 2009. The competition consists of diving from the Saint-Nicolas tower. From 1778, under the direction of engineers Leclerc and Lescure de Bellerive, was undertaken the digging of the basin afloat, in the stirrup called Petite-Rive. Its commissioning will be done in 1808.
During the xix th century, the harbor is occupied by the fleet of fishing boats and the inner basin by small coasters. The old port becoming too small to accommodate merchant ships, it was decided in 1862 to dig the outer basin , whose location is beyond the fortifications. In the shape of an inverted L, this port has direct access to the Rompsay Canal and the rail network . A lock gate provides high tide access to the channel and a swing bridge allows communication between Gabut and the wooden town.
The lifting bridge of the Gabut or Sherzer Bridge , named after the engineer who designed it is a structure of type tilting / rolling lift . In 1935, it was decided to replace the swing bridge by a lift bridge. The lift bridge pivots like a drawbridge on a transverse axis. At the rear of this axis, two toothed arches are connected to huge counterweights and lift the fly rolling on their rack. Built for the port of Marseille in 1927 by the company Fivellile, the book is transported to La Rochelle by the sea in 1936, before being reassembled. The movable metal structure, once lifted, allows to release a passage of 16.50 m.

Drone Footage Of La Rochelle Vieux-Port Entrance With Tour De La Chaine And Saint-Nicolas, France
Built in the 14th century, the “Tour De La Chaine “ and “Tour Saint-Nicolas” are emblematic of La Rochelle.
#interestingfact, a huge and heavy chain used to be stretched across the harbor mouth between these two towers at night.
They would constitute the majestic gateway to the Old Port of La Rochelle.
The Saint-Nicolas Tower served as a prison during the time of the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes.
The Tour De La Chaine was used as a powder magazine and after this, remained empty for 3 centuries.
These two towers are now an inseparable part of the La Rochelle port and you can appreciate the majesty of these two old ladies in this drone shot at sunset.
