Le Mont d’Or est le dernier vestige de la tour d'un château du 13e siècle au sommet d'une colline d'oliviers. Surplombant la vallée de Manosque (Alpes-de-Haute-Provence) et du Luberon, le «Mont d’Or» vient de «Mont d’Aure» qui signifie «vent». Et en effet, il nous a fallu patiemment attendre un matin calme où le mistral s'est arrêté de souffler pendant 30 minutes pour pouvoir tourner ces quelques images avec le drone!

Manosque is the largest town and commune in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department in southeastern France. However, it is not the préfecture of the department, which resides in the smaller town of Digne-les-Bains. Manosque is located at the far eastern end of the Luberon near the Durance river.
Manosque has existed since before 966 when it is first mentioned historically. Commerce thrived in the town in the 13th century leading the population to increase to 10,000 inhabitants. It was at this time that the city walls were constructed.
The walls of Manosque have been completely destroyed apart from a few remaining gates. The population suffered greatly starting in the 18th century due to plagues in 1720 and 1834. Between 1950 and 1970 the town saw a huge increase in population along with other areas south of the Luberon. A threefold increase in inhabitants occurred.

Small rural town, Manosque became, over the years, the most populated city of the Alpes de Haute-Provence department. A thousand-year-old city, it leaves hardly any trace of its existence before the Roman period when it becomes famous for its large regional market.
Many legends situate the existence of Manosque in time.
Around 218 BC, Hannibal coming from Africa with his army of men and elephants would have gone up the course of the Durance to reach the Alpine passes to the Italian border.
Another legend says that a Roman general named Manueascu camped under the walls of the fortified city during the invasion of Provence by the Romans. No one can attest to the veracity of any of these versions ... but one thing is certain, the story of Manosque is not young.
Around the year 900, Manoasca was destroyed by the Saracens. Guillaume 1er de Provence, known as the Liberator, was a Provençal noble, famous for having defeated and chased the Sarrazins of Provence in 973.
He then lived in a castle located at the top of the hill of Mont d'Or in Manosque, of which he still remains this famous piece of wall; to discover in this video.
