TOUR OF SAINT-EMILION
Saint-Emilion is a charming medieval village located in the heart of the famous Bordeaux wine area. In 1999 it was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. It is well known for its wineries, delicious Grand-Cru wine and beautiful architecture.
As it is only about 40 minutes’ drive away from Bordeaux, we decided to stop by for few hours to explore the town.
MAIN ATTRACTIONS at a glance:
????MONOLITHIC CHURCH and its BELL TOWER - the largest monolithic church in Europe. You can climb the tower (198 steps) to be rewarded with beautiful views of the village (get the ticket and the keys from the nearby Tourist Office – personally, we only climb the King’s Tower and the views were amazing!)
????KING’S TOWER (La Tour du Roy) - climb the 118 steps to the top for some stunning panoramic views of the town and the surrounding vineyards.
????CORDELIERS CLOISTER - remains of a 14th century monastery and medieval herbal garden, now converted into a wine bar
???? GREAT WALL (Grandes Murailles) - unrestored remains of a XIII century Benedictine monastery that collapsed for the most part
????COLLEGIATE CHURCH and its cloister – imposing Romanesque church with a beautiful 14th century cloister, one of the most impressive in the Gironde region
???? CADENE’S GATE and CADENE’S HOUSE – located on Rue Guadet
????TERTRES – narrow steep cobbled streets
???? PUBLIC WASH HOUSE
????MAISON DU VIN (Wine House) - amazing selection of wines from local wine estates - they also do wine tastings

HD Saint Emilion, Bordeaux wine region, France. A quiet Visit
Saint-Émilion is a commune in the Gironde department in Aquitaine in southwestern France. Saint-Émilion's history goes back to prehistoric times and is a UNESCO World Heritage site, with fascinating Romanesque churches and ruins stretching all along steep and narrow streets.
The Romans planted vineyards in what was to become Saint-Émilion as early as the 2nd century AD. In the 4th century, the Latin poet Ausonius lauded the fruit of the bountiful vine.
The town was named after the monk Émilion, a travelling confessor, who settled in a hermitage carved into the rock there in the 8th century. It was the monks who followed him that started up the commercial wine production in the area. Travels with my wife is a production
Saint-Émilion is one of the principal red wine areas of Bordeaux along with the Médoc, Graves and Pomerol. The region is much smaller than the Médoc and adjoins Pomerol. As in Pomerol and the other appellations on the right bank of the Gironde, the primary grape varieties used are the Merlot and Cabernet Franc, with relatively small amounts of Cabernet Sauvignon also being used by some chateaux.
Saint Émilion wines were not included in the 1855 Bordeaux classification. The first formal classification in Saint-Émilion was made in 1955. Unlike the 1855 classification, it is regularly revised.
Château Ausone and Château Cheval Blanc are the only two wines currently classified as Premiers grands crus classes A (First Great Growths category A). There are then 13 Premiers grands crus classés B and 47 grands crus classés. In addition, a large number of vineyards are classified as Grand Cru.

Saint Emilion
Saint-Emilion is a town 35 kilometres east of Bordeaux in the Gironde department and in the Aquitaine region of south-west France. It is best known for the vineyards which surround the town, Saint-Emilion being one of the four Bordeaux red wine regions, but is also an exceptionally attractive small town.
The history of the town dates back almost 2000 years when the Romans planted vineyards here as early as the 2nd century AD, while Saint-Émilion itself dates from the 8th century when a Breton Monk called Emilion came to settle here in a hermitage carved into the rock. The cave where he lived from 750 - 767 AD subsequently became a pilgrim destination.
St Emilion is home to one of the oldest Wine Societies in the world established in 1199, the ‘Jurade of St Emilion’. Twice a year in the spring and at harvest time there is a procession through the cobbled streets by the crimson-robed ‘jurade’ and a proclamation from the heights of the ‘Tour du Roy’.
