Lake Bled (Slovene: Blejsko jezero; German: Bleder See, Veldeser See) is a lake in the Julian Alps of the Upper Carniolan region of northwestern Slovenia, where it adjoins the town of Bled. The area is a tourist destination. The lake is 35 km (22 mi) from Ljubljana International Airport and 55 km (34 mi) from the capital city, Ljubljana.
The lake is of mixed glacial and tectonic origin. It is 2,120 m (6,960 ft) long and 1,380 m (4,530 ft) wide, with a maximum depth of 29.5 m (97 ft), and it has a small island. The lake lies in a picturesque environment, surrounded by mountains and forests. Medieval Bled Castle stands above the lake on the north shore and has a museum. The Zaka Valley lies at the west end of the lake.
The World Rowing Championships in 1966, 1979, 1989, and 2011 were held at Lake Bled.
The lake surrounds Bled Island (Blejski otok). The island has several buildings, the main one being the pilgrimage church dedicated to the Assumption of Mary (Cerkev Marijinega vnebovzetja), built in its current form near the end of the 17th century, and decorated with remains of Gothic frescos from around 1470 in the presbyterium and rich Baroque equipment.
The church has a 52 m (171 ft) tower and there is a Baroque stairway dating from 1655 with 99 stone steps leading up to the building. The church is frequently visited and weddings are held there regularly. Traditionally it is considered good luck for the groom to carry his bride up the steps on the day of their wedding before ringing the bell and making a wish inside the church.
The traditional transportation to Bled Island is a wooden boat known as a pletna The word pletna is a borrowing from Bavarian German Plätten 'flat-bottomed boat'. Some sources claim the pletna was used in Lake Bled as early as 1150 AD, but most historians date the first boats to 1590 AD. Similar in shape to Italian gondolas, a pletna seats 20 passengers. Modern boats are still made by hand and are recognizable by their colourful awnings. Pletna oarsman employ the stehrudder technique to propel and navigate boats across the lake using two oars. The role of the oarsman dates back to 1740, when Empress Maria Theresa granted 22 local families exclusive rights to ferry religious pilgrims across Lake Bled to worship on Bled Island. The profession is still restricted. Many modern oarsman descend directly from the original 22 families.
The area's culinary specialty, a cream pastry (kremna rezina or kremšnita 'Cremeschnitte'), was designated a protected dish of designated origin in 2016 by the Slovene government. Although various Slovene cream pastries date back to the Habsburg era,[the current official recipe was created in 1953 by Ištvan Lukačević, the former manager of the Hotel Park's patisserie. There is an annual festival dedicated to the pastry. It is estimated that 12 million cream pastries have been prepared at the Hotel Park’s patisserie over the last 60 years.

Preddvor - A visit to Black Lake in Slovenia
Jezero Crnava (Black Lake) is an artificial lake just 30kms north of Ljubljana, Slovenia. It’s a beautiful location with enviable views of the Kamnik Alps and their most distinctive peak, Mount Storzic.
The surrounding area is packed with hiking trails and great cycling routes. You can visit one of the two hilltop churches visible from the lake, Saint Jacob Church and Saint Lawrence Church, or simple take a nice walk around the lakeside, hire one of the boats from the Hotel Alma beside the lake, and relax with a drink on the hotel terrace overlooking the lake and soak up the views.
In this video I show you footage from a walk around the lake with my family, along with some great photos taken then and at other times of the year.
Lake Crnava is stunning any time of the year.

Lake Bled | Blejsko jezero
Beautiful Bled lake. ???? Blejska pletna (boat on the video is called PLETNA) and it dates back to as early as 1590. It can take from 10 to 20 people on a beautiful ride across the lake. Pletna has a canvas roof so it protects you from the hot sun.
DO YOU LOVE SWIMMING? Water in the lake can reach 25°C. Sometimes even degree or two more, making lake an excellent choice for a refreshing but cozy swim.
O, and not to forget... Island is a must visit place for those who love romantic ❤ but unusual ambient, with an opportunity for some stunning photos. Not to mention the old castle above the lake. Just amazing.

Lake Bohinj & Bled // Triglav National Park // Slovenia [4k]
Exploring Lake Bohinj and Triglav National Park in Slovenia (Bohinjska Bistrica)
Lake Bohinj is the largest natural lake in Slovenia. Nested in the heart of the Julian Alps, this jewel is a precious natural resource and at the same time offers endless opportunities for outdoor activities.
Lake Bohinj is located in a glacial valley and it comprises almost 100 million cubic metres of water – according to an old Bohinj joke: no more than a bucket if it is large enough. The steeply descending lake basin is relatively smoothly shaped and has no shallow areas. In summer, the temperature of the water rises to 22 °C; in winter, the lake freezes sometimes. Water level rises 2 – 3 metres after heavy rainfall.
Lake water is restored three times per year. The main tributary is the Savica, and the main distributary is the Sava Bohinjka. More than a third of the water flows into the lake from the Karst springs under the lake surface along the northern shore. During heavy rainfall, the Karst waters gush out as the Govic spring on the Pršivec hillside.
Lake Bohinj is perfect for water activities all year round – from swimming, boat riding, wind surfing, kayaking or canoeing, fishing and diving in warmer months, to (sometimes) even ice skating in winter. Visitors can also take a wonderful tourist boat ride or simply go for a relaxing walk along the shore. If ice stating is an option, please be aware, that you can only skate and walk on ice at your own responsibility. We recommend you to be extremely cautious!
There is a walking trail around the entire perimeter of Lake Bohinj. This trail is flat and easy to walk. I walked a small portion of it and along the way I saw a lot of families hanging out on the slivers of beaches along the water’s edge.

Lake Bled Travel Guide | Day Trip from Ljubljana, Slovenia Video Transcript:
Lake Bled is probably the most popular day trip you can take from Ljubljana. This is a lake that sits on the Julian Alps, and in the middle of the lake you have a small island with a church - it’s about as picturesque as it gets and it draws massive crowds, but first, the journey there.
Bled Castle is a medieval castle that was built on a cliff rising 130 meters over Lake Bled. According to written sources, this is the oldest castle in Slovenia, first being mentioned in a document from the year 1011. The castle is set up around two courtyards which are connected with a staircase. Once you’re there, you can visit the chapel, check out some of the exhibits, watch a demonstration at the castle forge, or eat at the castle coffee shop or restaurant.
After the castle visit, we hiked back down and started our walk along Lake Bled because we were still feeling pretty stuffed from lunch. Little did we know this would take us several hours to complete.
After eating our slice of Bled Cream Cake, or Kremsnita, it was finally time to arrange a boat ride to Bled Island. While you can rent your own row boat to take out on the island, we chose to pay the 14 Euros per person to have someone else do the hard work. However, if you’re with a group of friends or travelling with family, it’s definitely cheaper to just rent a boat and row it yourself.
Bled Island is very small and it got pretty crowded even though it was low season. Forty minutes turned out to be plenty of time to climb up, have a look around, and enjoy some ice cream.
Now one last piece of advice: we visited in the off-season and at the end of the day, we found out there were not enough buses to transport everyone from Lake Bled back to Ljubljana.
We weren’t able to get on one bus because it was full, so we waited an hour and a half for the next one. By then, more day-trippers like us had gathered, and once again, not everyone could get on the bus, leaving a lot of people stranded, having to find a taxi or other alternative.
There was a lot of pushing and shoving, and many visitors with prepaid tickets were visibly upset.
Because our bus was full, this also meant that even though there were several scheduled stops on the way back to Ljubljana, we couldn’t pick up any passengers along the way, many of them who had been waiting for hours.
Lake Bled has experienced a boom in tourism, but the infrastructure to transport people hasn’t quite caught up yet. After a nice day visiting Bled, getting out of there proved to be very chaotic and stressful. Hopefully things will change in the future, but until then, know that leaving at the end can be tricky.
