Journey to Kamchatka, Russia, 2013
I am Adam from Australia. In July, 2013 I decided to travel to Kamchatka which is located in the Russia Far East. This trip was part of my short, month journey across Russia. Kamchatka remains an isolated and off road location with planes being the most practical means to transport to get there. It is a land full of active volcanoes, mountains, wild and untouched nature and animals. The remote nature of Kamchatka means that traveling around without a guide or proper vehicle/knowledge is very difficult. I booked a tour with a Russian company where it was a young couple from Ukraine and I. In this trip we were mainly based in the small town of Paratunka, outside of the main city Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky. We visited 3 volcanoes: Avacha, Gorely and Mutnovsky. Rafted down the rivers and sailed out into the Pacific Ocean. Kamchatka is truly one of the last untouched wonders of the world, unspoiled by both development and tourism. I have a fairly solid knowledge of Russian which has greatly assisted me in traveling in this region.
Hiking a Russian Volcano in Siberia's Wild Kamchatka
Volcano trekking in the Russian Far East is a popular outdoor activity on Kamchatka Peninsula, with more than 300 volcanoes — 29 of them active. A highlight of MIR’s uncommon journey, “Remote Russia: Yakutia & Kamchatka, ( is a day hike at the foot of Avacha Volcano near Petropavolsk-Kamchatsky.
For MIR travelers on custom, private journeys, a more challenging adventure – as in this video – is hiking in and around the massive Mutnovsky Volcano, with its four separate craters, ice caves, glaciers, and steaming fumaroles — the hottest and most active of all volcanoes on Kamchatka. Once off-limits to foreigners during Soviet times, UNESCO-listed Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the world’s wildest natural settings – a must-see destination for intrepid travelers. MIR's tour also explores Yakutia, where more than 40% of the land sits above the Arctic Circle. This is the land of mammoths, diamonds, UNESCO-listed 650-feet-tall Lena Pillars, and Yakutsk – the world's largest city built on permafrost.

Kamchatka Peninsula
On Russia's far Eastern edge is the stark peninsula of Kamchatka. Heaven and hell collide in this surprising place. Life and death in a delicate balance. Volcanoes create a land of fire and ice.
Rafting the Bystraya River in Siberia's Wild Kamchatka
Dubbed the “Wild, Wild East,” Kamchatka Peninsula on Russia’s east coast ( ) is a relatively unknown and uncommon travel destination of volcanoes, geysers, and wild rivers, with abundant fishing and wildlife. MIR travelers can arrange a thrilling rafting trip along the Bystraya River, second-longest on Kamchatka Peninsula, and teeming with salmon and rainbow trout.
Another option is MIR’s small group tour, “Remote Russia: Yakutia & Kamchatka ( where travelers explore this spectacular volcanic promontory and its rugged landscape by cross-country vehicle and helicopter, viewing volcanoes and geysers and meeting indigenous people along the way. Off limits to foreigners during Soviet times, Kamchatka Peninsula is one of the world’s wildest natural settings. Russia's Kamchatka Is A Stunning Place Worth Protecting (1998)
Discovering Kamchatka (1998): A report on the region of Kamchatka after the fall of the Soviet Union, its attempts to become a tourist hot spot, and the unique environment local government are trying to protect.
Subscribe to Journeyman here:
Kamchatka is a peninsular in the Russian Far-East. Populated with volcanoes, and prone to earthquakes, the peninsular is still in formation. This fascinates people like Yuri Dubik, who studies the geology of the region, yet he admits that the natural phenomena can cause problems for the peninsular's residents. Due to the natural beauty of Kamchatka, the region's government are keen to develop tourist infrastructure to bring in foreigners to the region. But the main aim of the authorities is to protect Kamchatka's natural environment. While many foreign investors are interested in taking advantage of the region's natural resources, they must abide by the strict rules in place to protect Kamchatka's flora and fauna. As a local fisherman states: We have the goal of leaving something for our children. A touching report on a area few have seen or know, and the people looking to protect it.

Social entrepreneurs of Kamchatka. Galileo Impact Stories #27
Hi, friends. We at Galileo are trying out new formats and styles for our Youtube channel. Last week I visited a very interesting and far place – Kamchatka. I was working with a group of local social entrepreneurs and decided to tell you about one of them. So, let’s start.
What do you know about Kamchatka? No doubt, this sub-Arctic, 1250km-long finger of land in the Russian Far East is one of the top places on Earth for abundant wildlife, despite being covered in snow and ice most of the time of the year. It is a wild, far and mysterious land of volcanoes, forests and lakes.
Locals’ joke: the population is 300 000 and 25 000 of them are bears. Your chances to see a bear on the distance are significantly high, so be careful and watch out! Savage and unexplored, this area is populated with snow sheep, reindeers, wolves, foxes, wolverines, and sables.
Kamchatka stretches out between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean. Coastal areas are home to whales, huge seabird colonies and thousands of sea otters. However, only a few thousands of tourists a year visit this little-known region. Kamchatka is a splendid place for outdoor entertainment: hiking, sailing, racing dog sledges and fishing.
There are also 160 volcanoes on Kamchatka and 29 of them are still active. The 29 active volcanoes are considered a UNESCO World Heritage site, and for good reason. Many volcanoes can be hiked, and the views are absolutely breathtaking, both from the ground and from the peaks. Knowing that the volcanoes still have an active connection with the molten rock in the mantle of the Earth and seeing the fumes escaping the crater only add to the thrill.
And now I want to present to you a wonderful social venture. The scientific and educational interactive museum is dedicated to the Kamchatka volcanoes and international ones. Vulcanarium.
Museum has opened just two years ago. In addition to rock samples and large photo-video material, the exposition includes unique models of lava flows in action. It conveys perfectly the unusual atmosphere of Kamchatka's natural wonders. You can start up in the clouds, go into the lava cave and see how the lava flow is formed. Visitors can watch, read, listen, touch and feel. The author and organizer of the project is the candidate of physical and mathematical sciences, deputy director of the Institute of Volcanology and Seismology of the Far Eastern Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences Sergei Samoilenko.
Sergei and his wife Alena are real enthusiasts and social entrepreneurs. They not just earn money but want to change something around them, make the life of people more interesting and conscious.
Their museum perfectly complements the tourist infrastructure of the Petropavlovsk city. I wish the organizers all the success and the museum’s exposition expansion. I hope many children and adults will visit it and will dive into the amazing world of volcanoes.
If you want to learn more and visit the Vulcanarium and Kamchatka region, you can write to Sergei and Alena at their official website. There are a lot of photos, videos, and information about the museum.
Well, I hope you like this impact story about social entrepreneurs from Kamchatka. Write in comments what do you think about the museum? Do you want to visit it? I guess so.
Thanks’ for watching. Bye, have a nice day!

fuckin' good KAMCHATKA - a ballet for two poachers
Directed by Juerg Da Vaz
1200 miles from Kamchatsky-Petropavlovsk in the deep forest of Kamchatka and 120 Miles away from Esso, the next village, we meet Ivan and Dima, the two poachers in their little hut. They takes us for fishing. Nothing is planned, no situation arranged, no questions asked. Juerg and Yuri are unexpected passers-by. The mosquitoes clearly draw the line between them and the poachers.
The social situation offers a rare glimpse into the lives of men that have run away from prison in Petropavlovsk. 24 hours are barely enough to survive for a day. But the struggle for daily survival is part of their pride and strength. And their is another side to isolation. Out there in no-mans-land, 1200km from Petropavlovsk in the wilderness, the butterfly and the portraits of Faina create a level of sensitivity of another world. They show that culture has a life and an existence even more so, when circumstances are less than favorable. Faina is a special character. Her self-pride makes her and us believe that their could be a new beginning at any moment, if...

SEG 2018 Field Trip: Central and South Kamchatka Mining Districts, Far East of Russia
Kamchatka Peninsula is located in the northeastern section of the Pacific Ring of Fire. There are 31 active volcanoes and more than 150 groups of hot springs, countless boiling mud cauldrons, fumaroles, and other forms of volcanic activity.
This is a geologically dynamic area with highly prospective mining districts for the discovery of Cu-Au-Mo porphyry, Au-Ag epithermal deposits. The field trip will provide the opportunity to visit the Central Kamchatka mining district with the Shanuch Ni-Cu-Co Mine and Kirganik Cu-Au porphyry deposit (a greenfields exploration project). The trip also includes a visit to the South Kamchatka mining district, which is surrounded by active volcanoes and hydrothermal systems. It hosts the Mutnovskoe and Rodnikovoe Au-Ag low-sulfidation deposits, Mutnovsky and Gorely active volcanoes (a crater visit is included), the Mutnovsky Geothermal Power Plant, and several groups of hot springs (Dachniy, Vilyuchinskie and Verkhne Paratunskie).

RUSSIA: WARNING OF STARVATION IN ISOLATED NORTHEAST
Russian/Eng/Nat
Cut off from the rest of the country and starved of cash to feed its people, aid agencies are warning of looming starvation and medical disaster in Russia's isolated northeast.
The Kamchatka peninsula on the Pacific coast is under ice and snow for several months of the year and can only be reached by sea and air.
The Red Cross has launched an appeal to deliver six and a half (m) million Swiss francs of humanitarian aid to a region where 82-thousand people are threatened by catastrophe.
Kamchatka is the land of snow, ice and volcanoes.
It was colonised by Russian settlers 300 hundred years ago and became one of the country's main outposts on its eastern coast.
Although frozen over for much of the year, the harbour at the region's main town Petropavlovsk-Kamchatka is the base for a major fishing fleet.
During the Soviet era the fleet caught up to one and a half (m) million tonnes of fish a year providing enough food for the inhabitants of a peninsula the size of Japan or Britain.
Fuel for its power stations, in a region where temperatures regularly plunge as low as minus 20 or 30 degrees Celsius, always had to be brought in by sea.
But that was when Kamchatka was just another part of the command economy of the U-S-S-R.
Since then, say local people, Kamchatka has been left to its own devices.
When the regional administration can't pay for tankers to deliver fuel, Kamchatka's population goes without light and heat for days on end.
And now statistics indicate 52 percent of the local population is living below the poverty line - based on the meagre minimum of around 1-thousand 400 roubles (62 U-S dollars) a month needed to survive.
One such family hit by Kamchatka's downturn is the Maksimovs.
Lyubov Maksimova lives with 13 children in a three-roomed house in the shadow of two active volcanoes.
Her husband is a farm worker who has not received any salary in cash for the last four years.
The family keeps cows and grows its own vegetables.
She says they were given 200 roubles in benefits recently (less than 10 U-S dollars), but that only provides enough for the barest minimum.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Now money is tight we basically just buy cooking oil so it's possible to fry potatoes.... washing powder to wash with.
SUPERCAPTION Lyubov Maksimova, resident of Kamchatka
The Red Cross says Kamchatka is threatened not just by imminent starvation but by a massive health care crisis.
At the regional psychiatric hospital doctors say the region bears a greater burden than many areas in Russia.
Kamchatka's population has several mental mountains to climb - regular fuel and energy crises, the constant threat of earthquakes or volcano eruptions, the sense of being cut off from the rest of the country, as well as the financial crisis which has battered Russia since the collapse of the rouble last August.
It's not surprising that the hospital's 400 beds are all full with patients for whom some the stress was too great.
When Kamchatka was without heat and electricity for several days at the end of last year, the doctors were prepared for the worst.
SOUNDBITE: (Russian)
Our emotions were really negative, I wouldn't say panic, but close to it. The first frost had come and there was a danger that all the children in this department, all the patients would freeze.
SUPERCAPTION: Dr Vladimir Paramonov, deputy chief doctor, Kamchatka regional psychiatric hospital
With no prospects of an economic improvement, the Red Cross forecasts disaster for the region if help is not delivered fast.
Hospitals like the psychiatric centre are running on pitiful state funds which can only pay for around 20 per cent of the medicine required.

The Kamchatka Peninsula (Russian: полуо́стров Камча́тка, Poluostrov Kamchatka, IPA: [pəlʊˈostrəf kɐmˈt͡ɕætkə]) is a 1,250-kilometre-long (780 mi) peninsula in the Russian Far East, with an area of about 270,000 km2 (100,000 sq mi). The Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Okhotsk make up the peninsula's eastern and western coastlines, respectively. Immediately offshore along the Pacific coast of the peninsula runs the 10,500-metre (34,400-ft) deep Kuril–Kamchatka Trench.
The Kamchatka Peninsula, the Commander Islands, and Karaginsky Island constitute the Kamchatka Krai of the Russian Federation. The vast majority of the 322,079 inhabitants are ethnic Russians, but about 13,000 Koryaks (2014) live there as well. More than half of the population lives in Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky (179,526 in 2010) and nearby Yelizovo (38,980). The Kamchatka peninsula contains the volcanoes of Kamchatka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
