Everybody visits Istanbul when they come to Turkey but only a few people ever make it to Edirne. Which makes it a great destination for the real travelers. It is the perfect day trip from Istanbul as it is about a 3 hour drive.
So here are 3 Reasons to Visit Edirne
#1 Selimiye Mosque
This is not just another mosque, it is considered to be one of the highest achievements of Islamic Architecture. Built between 1569-1575 by Mimar Sinan, one of the most famous Ottoman architects and is often compared to Michelangelo. Made from cut stone and marble and encompassed by a massive dome over 100 feet in diameter. Beside all this it is simply stunning and one can spend an hour or two just admiring all detail.
#2 Sultan Bayesid the second Health Museum
Built in 1488 this facility was used as a hospital and school for over 4 centuries. Here you can walk around and get a glimpse of the history of medicine in the Ottoman empire. All in all it is a pretty cool complex just to walk around.
#3 liver
Edirne is famous for their fried cow liver…it is a delicacy here. It is covered in flour and dropped into some hot oil. I’m not a huge fan of organ meat but I have to admit I think it is pretty tasty. So don’t be a wuss and miss out on this.
so if you are coming to Istanbul, and want to see the real Turkey. Take a quick day trip to Edirne. If you have any questions please leave them in the comment box below.

What to See and Eat in Edirne, Turkey
►Read the blog:
Come with David as he explores what to see and where to eat in Edirne, Turkey. The city is located in northwestern Turkey near the borders of Greece and Bulgaria. Edirne served as the second capital city of the Ottoman Empire, making it no wonder why it is steeped in history. There is a great deal of history to see in Edirne!
David’s first stop in Edirne is to see the massive 16th century Selimiye Mosque looking over the city. Anyone can enter the mosque (remember to remove your shoes and dress appropriately) to see the beautiful calligraphy and admire the giant dome. Attached to Selimiye Mosque is a small bazaar. The Tower of Macedon is up next. What looks like nothing more than a pile of stones is actually one of four ramparts of a castle built during the Roman Empire. In that time Edirne was known as Hadrianopolis, meaning Hadrian’s City.
After being outside, David heads indoors to the 16th century Ali Pasha Bazaar to get out of the heat and do some souvenir shopping. Though not nearly as large as Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar, the Ali Pasha Bazaar does have several vendors (about 130) selling everything from toys and rugs, to shoes and jewelry. There are also great souvenirs here such as scented soaps, spices, and Turkish delight. The Ali Pasha Mosque is walking distance from Selimiye Mosque.
Now for David’s favorite places to eat in Edirne. First restaurant he visits is Villa Restaurant, a beautiful space overlooking the Maritsa River. Villa Restaurant is large because is used for weddings and corporate events, but for lunch it is quite and casual, perfect stop after a day of sightseeing. David tried some refreshing salad and grilled lamb skewers for lunch. No visit to Edirne is complete without dining at Kofteci Osman, a restaurant specializing in Turkish meatballs known as Kofteci.
Located in the city center, Kofteci Osman serves up juicy meatballs and tons of fried lamb liver. If you’re craving more home-style Turkish food, have dinner at Melek Anne. Situated in the city center, Melek Anne is owned by Ms. Sibil, who cooks the food daily. David chose a little bit of everything: pasta, meatballs, and stuffed grape leaves. Last but not least, David heads into Cigercisi Kemal Usta to have the undisputed “best fried liver in Edirne.” The only thing on the menu is fried liver and hot peppers, so even if you don’t speak Turkish you can’t get confused when ordering. If you haven’t had fried liver before, you are missing out! David had it with a cold glass of Ayran, which is a yogurt drink that helps protect your stomach lining and helps with digestion.
And there you have David’s suggestions for what to see and where to eat in Edirne.

Walking Tour | Edirne kapı | Kariye Museum | Fatih | Istanbul |Turkey |26 February 2018
hiking tour is below
The building that is located in the Edirnekapı neighborhood of İstanbul and called the “Chora Museum” (Kariye Müzesi) is a church building that constitutes the center of the Chora Monastery, which was a great building complex in the Eastern Roman Empire period, and it was dedicated to Jesus Christ. Since it stood outside of the city walls built by Constantine, the building was called “Chora”, which means “in the country” or “outside of the city” in Greek.
Although the exact construction date of the building is unknown, according to the description of Symeon the Metaphrast, an author and saint who lived in the late 10th century, the region where the Chora monastery was located began to gain importance as a holy cemetery (necropolis) when the relics of Saint Babylas, who had been martyred in the early periods of Christianity, in 298, together with his 84 disciples, in Nicomedia (İznik), were buried here in the early 4th century.
The Chora monastery was rebuilt in the 6th century, in 536, by the Emperor Justinian (527-565) on the cemetery that was considered holy, on a chapel that had been ruined. On the other hand, according to the unproven claim on the page 229 of the calendar of Byzantine feasts written by Manuel Gedeon, the construction of the monastery had been initiated by Theodoros, the uncle of Justinian’s wife Theodora, in the 6th century, but it had been devastated by an earthquake that occurred on October 6, 557, and the emperor had built a larger monastery on the site of the former one.
Afterwards, the monastery was used as a burial area for prominent persons. When the Patriarch Germanus who died in 740 was buried here, the monastery appeared for the first time in written sources, and its degree of holiness increased, when Theophanes, Metropolitan of Nicaea, who died in the 9th century, also was buried here. The building was destructed in the Iconoclastic period (711-843) and it was reconstructed in different periods. According to archaeological studies carried out between 1947 and 1958, there were five different construction periods here, and those periods witnessed in the 11th, 12th and 14th centuries should have been the periods of large-scale constructions or restorations.
The only surviving element originating from the earliest period of the building that lasted until the 9th century is the substructure on the east side. This substructure, which originates from the 5th or 6th centuries as indicated by its masonry, had not been built as a crypt, but it was used later as a burial place, as indicated by the tombs uncovered. At the end of the Iconoclastic period, after the Council of Nicaea in 843, Michael of Synkellos, who was appointed the high priest of the monastery, rebuilt the monastery completely by organizing a large construction campaign.
The remains of this structure built in the 9th century can only be seen today at the eastern end of the church. The tomb covered by a barrel vault beneath the naos covering dates from this period.
During the Comneni period (1081-1185), since the Great Palace was abandoned and the religious ceremonies were held in the Chora Monastery Church that was close to the new imperial residence at the Palace of Blachernae, the church gained in importance. In the last quarter of the 11th century, Maria Doukaina, the mother-in-law of Emperor Alexios I Komnenos (1081-1118), built a new church upon the ruins of the Chora Monastery. The remains of this building can be seen at the lover parts of the naos walls, under the marble coverings. Since almost no part of its superstructure has survived, the exact form of the building is unknown.
Isaac Komnenos, the younger son of Alexios I, rebuilt a large part of the monastery in 1120. The former three apses were replaced by a single and large apse, the relatively small dome supported by four columns was enlarged and supported by four corner pillars, the arches were narrowed, and thus, a more monumental interior space was created.
There is almost no information about the Chora Monastery during the Latin occupation between 1204 and 1261, but considering the large-scale construction of Metochites, the monastery seems to have been devastated during the Latin occupation.

Join David as he shows you around the top 15 places to see in Istanbul! Istanbul is one of the only transcontinental cities on the planet, spreading across Europe and Asia Minor. As Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul is a bustling hub of culture, history and gastronomy – a cosmopolitan capital in every sense.
David begins in the oldest part of the city, the Sultanahmet District. He begins in the Hippodrome (circus), which served as the center of public life for the Greek, Roman, and Byzantine citizens. Present-day Sultan Ahmed Square has a handful of surviving remnants from ancient times.
Near Sultan Ahmed Square are two of Turkey’s most visited attractions, steps from one another – the Ayia Sofia (Hagia Sophia) and Blue Mosque. The Ayia Sofia is now a museum, but was built as an Eastern Orthodox Basilica in 535 A.D. It was a Christian church for over 900 years before the Ottomans used it as a Mosque for another 481 years. It was the largest house of worship in the world for over 1,000 years!
Across the square is the Blue Mosque. Its name comes from the blue tiles used to decorate the interior. Nearby sits the stunning 15th century Topkapi Palace that served as the home and governmental seat for the Ottoman sultans until the 1850s. A tour will reveal beautiful stonework and intricately decorated staterooms, as well as a crown jewel and Imperial treasury exhibition.
After the palace, David takes us to the Archaeology Museum to show us some of what was uncovered in Istanbul. Perhaps the most impressive thing on display is the Sarcophagus of Alexander the Great with its detailed reliefs depicting Alexander’s life of successful conquering.
Not too far from the museum is the Basilica Cistern – a damp and dark subterranean cavern used to collect water for the city. The Medusa heads were likely stolen from a nearby Greco-Roman city to support the columns. Medusa’s face provided a warning against anyone who dared to tamper with the water supply.
The next day, David heads over to the 300-year-old Cağaloğlu Hamamı for a Turkish bath. This Hammam provides full-service spa treatments including scrubbing, steam baths, and massages. Definitely a MUST experience when in Istanbul.
David then heads to the shores of the Bosphorus for a scenic boat ride along the strait. From the water you’ll get panoramic vistas of the Istanbul skyline and get to enjoy view of other areas of this enormous city.
After arriving back on land, David heads to the Beyoğlu District to beautiful pedestrian-friendly Istiklal Street, or “Independence Avenue” for some lunch. It spans about 1.4 kilometers and is the perfect place for shopping and dining. You can walk or take the Nostalgic Tram in either direction. The end of Istiklal Street takes David into the heart of Istanbul, Taksim Square. In the center of the square is the Monument of the Republic (1928) commemorating the formation of the Turkish Republic in 1923.
Onto the Galata District to see a Whirling Dervish show at the Galata Museum. This 800-year old practice of spinning is used as a physical form of meditation. It is a mysterious and beautiful site to behold.
You can’t visit the Galata District and not notice the Galata Tower. It looks over Istanbul and provides 360-degree views of the city, the Bosphorus, Golden Horn and landmarks.
After all that sightseeing, David works up an appetite so he heads to the Karaköy waterfront to enjoy a cheap meal with a 5-star view. Nearby is the fish market. You can’t get to the Karaköy or Galata without crossing the Galata Bridge. From here you’ll see the skylines of both Sultanahmet and Galata districts.
Lastly, David goes out to one of the most exclusive entertainment complexes in the world. Reina sits along the Bosphorus and offers world-class dining, nightclubs, and beautiful ambiance. Dress to impress and make dinner reservations so you can stay after to party!

Migrants sent back from Greece to Turkey
(11 Mar 2016) About a hundred migrants who had entered Greece illegally from Turkey were sent back Friday through Ipsala border gate in Edirne province on northwestern Turkey.
Edirne provincial migration management said in a statement that 90 irregular migrants from Pakistan, Morocco, Algeria and Turkey were returned on Friday.
After arriving in Turkey, migrants were taken to Ipsala State Hospital for medical checks.
Seventy-one migrants from Pakistan and Morocco were sent to a detention center in Erzurum in the east of Turkey and eight Algerian migrants were placed in a deportation center in Edirne, according to the statement.
Eleven Turkish migrants were released after being taken to Ipsala police headquarters, the statement added.
