Welcome to the Faroe Islands! The Faroe Islands in Danish means the Islands of the Sheep, and you will see why! It’s located in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean about 400 miles off the coast of Northern Europe, between Norway and Iceland. The first people to colonize the islands were Norwegians about 1,200 years ago and it become a major Viking settlement in that time. Its main industries are fishing and tourism - people come to experience its natural beauty, incredible bird life and delicious Faroese gastronomy.
First up is Gasadalur, which for a long time it was the most isolated town in the Faroe Islands. It’s a very popular town to hike to because of its natural scenery and its cliff views. In 2006 they opened a tunnel to make the town more accessible. Fun fact: Gasadalur means Goose Valley.
Lake Sorvagsvatn is the biggest lake in the Faroe Islands. It has an area of 3.4 sqkm, and its located on the island of Vagar, where the airport is. It takes a few hours to hike around the entire lake, so get your hiking boots ready! The best way to see the lake is by helicopter, the only way to see the lake emptying out into the Atlantic Ocean.
Torshavn is one of the smallest and most pleasant capital cities in the world! Torshavn in Old Norse means Thor, God of Thunder. It’s a modern city with the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants and cafes in the islands. You can explore the old Tinganes district where the parliament building is. You can see the national museum, check out some galleries, see the harbor and dine at some delicious modern and traditional restaurants.
Now we head to the southernmost village in Streymoy, Kirkjubour. This was the religious center on the Faroe Islands for over 1,000 years until the reformation. We came to see the 13th century ruins of the Saint Agnes Cathedral, the House museum and a middle age church.
We head north on Streymoy to Saksun. This is a beautiful town with turf roof houses. The best time come is during low tide because you can see the beach and walk on a sand bar to the lagoon. There are no restaurants here so be sure to bring a snack for a picnic!
Tjornuvik is the northernmost town on the island of Streymoy. It’s a quiet village, but the scenery is beautiful its beach has epic views of the Atlantic Ocean.
Next up is Gjogv, the northernmost town on the Island of Eysturoy, the second largest island in the Faroes. It’s a small scenic village with a charming bed and breakfast. We stayed a night, but you can just as easily just come for the day. Gjogv is undoubtedly on of most picturesque places in the Faroe Islands. The name Gjogv means gorge – it was named after the village’s natural gorge
Klaksvik is the second largest town in the country and from here you can take a ferry to Kalsoy. I suggest you pass by Bakariio Jorun (Bakery Jorun) and grab a snack or lunch. They have plenty of Danish-style toasts with different toppings, as well as homemade pastries, coffee, and beverages.
A 25-minute ferry ride will take you to Kalsoy, AKA island of the man. There is one road that travels up the east side of the island connecting a handful of villages. Kalsoy is the best place in the Faroe Islands to go hiking. Or, you can just drive around and snap tons of photos of this picturesque island.
Next is Vidoy, the northernmost island in the archipelago. Here we visited Vidareidi. The northern islands are more traditional, less modern but if you love taking photos of amazing scenery then you must visit Vidareidi.
Lastly we are heading to the Island of Mykines! We took a helicopter but you can also take a ferry. Once you arrive you need to hike about 90 minutes west to see all the sea birds. There are over a dozen species of birds like the Gannet, Fulmar, Starling, Gulls, Razorbills and the most famous that everyone comes to see are the Puffins! Be sure to bring a packed lunch, drinking water, a warm outfit, comfy shoes, and don’t forget your camera!

Top Places to See in the Faroe Islands
Look! Google is coming
Google Street View is finally coming to the Faroe Islands.
For years, the Faroe Islands have been left without Google Street View.
Taking matters into her own hands, Durita Andreassen from the Faroe Islands has spent recent months mapping out her beautiful home country using sheep equipped with solar-powered cameras, creating her very own Sheep View 360.
Following the launch of her project, thousands of people urged Google to make the Faroe Islands a part of Google Street View, and their efforts have now proved fruitful.
The Google Maps team has arrived in the Faroe Islands with one mission: to help the Faroe Islands create their own Street View.
With the support of the Street View Camera Loan Program, the Faroese people are now equipped with a Street View Trekker and a fleet of 360 cameras to help capture even more (but slightly less woolly) Street View imagery of the archipelago.
It is now up to the Faroese people and tourists visiting the Faroe Islands to create Street View using sheep, bikes, backpacks, cars, kayaks, ships and even wheelbarrows. Furthermore, the Visit Faroe Islands office in Tórshavn and Atlantic Airways at the airport will be loaning out Google cameras, and anyone is welcome to lend a hand in the exciting project.

Torshavn, on Streymoy Island, is the capital city of the Faroe Islands. It's known for its old town, Tinganes, crammed with wooden turf-roofed houses on a small peninsula. The Faroe Islands is a self-governing archipelago, part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It comprises 18 rocky, volcanic islands between Iceland and Norway in the North Atlantic Ocean.

FAROE ISLANDS ????????/Visit Klaksvík and The Capital Tórshavn/Färöer Inseln
Visit Faroe Islands, a day in the Capital Torshavn and a visit to Klaksvik on the northern Islands, during summer 2019
The Faroe Islands (/ˈfɛəroʊ/; Faroese: Føroyar, pronounced [ˈfœɹjaɹ]; Danish: Færøerne, pronounced [ˈfæɐ̯øːˀɐnə]), or the Faeroe Islands, is a North Atlantic archipelago located 320 kilometres (200 mi) north-northwest of Scotland, and about halfway between Norway and Iceland. It is an autonomous territory[8] within the Kingdom of Denmark. The islands have a total area of about 1,400 square kilometres (540 sq mi) with a population of 51,783 as of June 2019.[3]
The terrain is rugged; the climate is subpolar oceanic climate (Cfc)—windy, wet, cloudy, and cool. Temperatures average above freezing throughout the year because of the Gulf Stream. As a result of the moderation and the northerly latitude, summers normally hover around 12 °C (54 °F). Average temperatures are 5 °C (41 °F) in winter.[9] The northerly latitude also results in perpetual civil twilight during summer nights and very short winter days.
Between 1035 and 1814 the Faroes were part of the Kingdom of Norway, which was in a personal union with Denmark from 1450. In 1814 the Treaty of Kiel transferred Norway to the king of Sweden, on the winning side of the Napoleonic wars, whereas the king of Denmark, on the losing side, retained the Faroes, along with the two other historical Norwegian island possessions in the North Atlantic: Greenland and Iceland. The Faroe Islands have been a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark since 1948.[10]
The Faroese control most of their domestic affairs. Those that remain the responsibility of Denmark include military defence, policing and the justice department, currency, and foreign affairs.[11] However, as they are not part of the same customs area as Denmark, the Faroe Islands have an independent trade policy and can establish trade agreements with other states. The islands also have representation in the Nordic Council as members of the Danish delegation. The Faroe Islands have their own national teams competing in certain sports.

Here we explore the best flavors of the Faroe Islands’ capital city of Torshavn. In this episode, David visits the three best restaurants in the capital: Aarstova, Koks and Etika. Our first stop is Aarstova. Situated in one of the oldest houses in Torshavn (dating back to the 1600’s), this unique restaurant specializes in rustic Faroese cuisine. Using local ingredients and family-style serving, Aarstova plays off the antiquated atmosphere of the house giving its guests a truly memorable dining experience. If you love shellfish, fish or lamb (their signature braised lamb leg dish is amazing!), then a visit to this idyllic Torshavn restaurant is a must!
The Faroe Islands are known across the world for their incredible seafood. The Faroe Islands’ capital city of Torshavn is (surprisingly) home to only one sushi restaurant, Etika. Etika takes the Islands’ ocean specialties and crafts them into some of the world’s most delicious sushi creations. With such fresh ingredients including some of the world’s best salmon at their fingertips, Etika is able to produce delicious arrangements with standards and quality that compete with the best Japanese restaurants. If you are a sushi lover looking to sample some of the freshest sushi in the world, dining at Etika is an absolute must!
And we saved the best for last, Koks Restaurant. A contemporary, fusion restaurant perched on a hill overlooking the small capital, Koks serves up traditional Faroese cuisine with a Michelin Star-worthy twist. Each selection on the menu has been infused with native ingredients and flavors, giving guests an exclusive taste of what the Faroe Islands have to offer. I decided to go with a delicious tasting menu. What better way to explore the best of what a destination has to offer than through its food? Next time you’re traveling to the Faroe Islands, make sure you stop into Koks Restaurant- an incredible culinary journey!
Thank you for watching Where to Eat in Torshavn, Faroe Islands!

Etika - Torshavn, Faroe Islands
The Faroe Islands are specifically known for one specialty: their seafood. If you plan to visit this gorgeous archipelago tucked between the North Atlantic & Norwegian Sea- sampling their sea fare is a no brainer. But if you think having an abundance of seafood means having an abundance of sushi restaurants… think again! The Faroe Islands’ capital city of Torshavn is home to only one (incredible) sushi restaurant, Etika. Etika takes the Islands’ ocean specialties and crafts them into some of the world’s most delicious sushi creations. With such flavorful and fresh seafood (including some of the world’s best salmon) at their fingertips, Etika is able to produce incredible arrangements with standards and quality that compete with the best Japanese sushi. Watch as David’s Been Here samples and explains Etika’s concepts and creations alongside the restaurant’s manager John. If you are a sushi lover looking to eat some of the most delicious sushi in the world, stopping into Etika is an absolute must!

Tourism in the Faroe Islands is growing like never before
Tourism in the Faroe Islands is growing like never before.
In January, 2013, Visit Faroe Islands launched a new strategy for Faroese tourism. An assessment of the strategy’s impact during the past three years clearly shows that the results so far are very good.

Long Driving Tour Around the Faroe Islands
Shortly before leaving the Faroes my friend Teitur and I drove from one side of the Faroe Islands to the other (starting in the last village on Vagar, Gasadalur, and driving up north to the island of Bordoy and its main town of Klaksvik). Along the way we see lots of cool stuff including the Faroes' highest waterfall. All music in the video is by me and/or me and my friends (like Curtis Rioux!)

Few Faroe Islands yen traffic lights. There is heavy traffic. Full-speckled sheep lazily on the lawn of the visible thing, green on the road that runs along the coast. And this was only the pure nature without human hands touching. Nani fog lifted, the North Sea embraces, parenteral this was unfolding in front of the Faroe Islands.
