Kilkenny Ireland
Kilkenny Ireland (2003).
Kilkenny (Irish: Cill Chainnigh, meaning church of Cainnech) is a city located in south-east part of Ireland and the county town of County Kilkenny. It is on both banks of the River Nore in the province of Leinster. The city is administered by a Borough Council and a Mayor which is a level below that of city council in the Local government of the state although the Local Government Act 2001 allows for the continued use of the description city. The borough has a population of 8,711, however the majority of the population live outside the borough boundary, the 2011 Irish Census gives the total population of the Borough & Environs as 24,423.
Kilkenny is a popular tourist destination. In 2009 the City of Kilkenny celebrated its 400th year since the granting of city status in 1609. Kilkenny's heritage is evident in the city and environs including the historic buildings such as Kilkenny Castle, St. Canice's Cathedral and round tower, Rothe House, Shee Alms House, Black Abbey, St. Mary's Cathedral, Kilkenny Town Hall, St. Francis Abbey, Grace's Castle, and St. John's Priory. Kilkenny is regarded for its culture with craft and design workshops, the Watergate Theatre, public gardens and museums. Annual events include Kilkenny Art Festival, the Cat Laughs comedy festival and music at the Rhythm and Roots festival and the Source concert. It is a popular base to explore the surrounding towns, villages and countryside. Controversy exists at the moment around the Kilkenny Central Access Scheme which is a road proposed to be built through the city centre.
Kilkenny began with an early sixth century ecclesiastical foundation within the kingdom of Ossory. Following Norman invasion of Ireland, Kilkenny Castle and a series of walls were built to protect the burghers of what became a Norman merchant town. William Marshall, Lord of Leinster, gave Kilkenny a charter as a town in 1207. By the late thirteenth century Kilkenny was under Norman-Irish control. The Statutes of Kilkenny passed at Kilkenny in 1367, aimed to curb the decline of the Hiberno-Norman Lordship of Ireland. In 1609 King James I of England granted Kilkenny a Royal Charter giving it the status of a city. Following the Rebellion of 1641, the Irish Catholic Confederation, also known as the Confederation of Kilkenny, was based in Kilkenny and lasted until the Cromwellian conquest of Ireland in 1649. Kilkenny was a famous brewing centre from the late seventeenth century. In the late twentieth century Kilkenny is a tourist and creative centre.
The Heritage Council offices are located at Church Lane. The seat of the Roman Catholic Bishop of Ossory is at St. Mary's Cathedral and the Church of Ireland Bishop of Cashel and Ossory is at St. Canice's Cathedral. Nearby larger cities include Waterford 45 kilometres (28 mi) south-southeast, Limerick 93 kilometres (58 mi) west and Dublin 101 kilometres (63 mi) northeast.

Clontarf constant traffic chaos to make a Cyclepath!
When communications between DublinBus and Dublin City Council (DCC) are substandard, the outcomes are most acutely felt by the city's long suffering citizens. Visitors to the city cannot fail to have noticed the schmozzle that is the LUAS extension, the need for which arose from an original deficit of joined up thinking.
The latest manifestation of this phenomenon can be seen daily on the Clontarf Road - a route serviced by the 130 bus, which operates on the Clontarf Castle to Abbey Street route. The great Dublin writer and dramatist George Bernard Shaw once declared - the road to Hell is paved with good intentions and so too was the proposal to create a CyclePath along the Dublin Bay shoreline. This work is being accompanied by the erection of a small flood barrier, itself the subject of major controversy preceding the 2106 General Election.
A lack of communication coupled with poor transport planning has resulted in the 130 bus scheduling more representing a lottery than a reliable timetable. In consequence, residents and visitors are daily obliged to endure buses being signaled then cancelled with no notice, sometimes several in a row. Commuters are effectively having to leave home 30 minutes earlier than usual, Dollymount Bridge is taking 3 times it standard journey time, and even longer at peak hours.
This video was shot on the same day - both outward and homeward legs. The outward leg, seen first, was during off peak hours, while the home-bound journey was at the beginning of peak time - 5-5:30pm. This project was conceived to show greater respect the rights of cyclists and enhance rider safety measures. The irony, as clearly shown on the homeward leg - those commuters on two wheels shown the least respect from the Rules of the Road, to say nothing of personal safety.
The fabulous voice that may be heard during the clip belongs to the fabulous Irish singer Maire Digan ( who is as talented as she is self-assuming!
At the time of writing, Ireland has been without a government for 5 weeks (since the General Elections) and few of its citizens seem to have noticed or even cared. Instead their collective focus has been directed to events that took place over 100 years ago, which cause a superb smokescreen from the growing inequality among them. In 2016 armed men still try to change a system they diagree wit but instead of taking charge of a post office they shoot up a hotel with AK47s, many of whose residents are homeless family in emergency accomodation.
A terrible beauty is born again!
The last of her kind | Peig Sayers I
Peig Sayers was born in west Kerry in 1873, living in what was then one of the most remote communities in Ireland. Through her life she lived through extraordinary change.
She grew up in an Ireland reeling from the Great Famine but died in one that had won its freedom from the British Empire. She also lived through profound and often unsettling social change that shattered the isolation of West Kerry.
Recognised as one of the great story tellers of the last century Peig recounted what this was like in vivid detail. She articulated what it was like to grow up in such a remote community, giving us insights into Irish society in the late 19th century. What makes her account unique is that she gives the perspective of a poor woman - a voice rarely heard in Irish history.
In this podcast on her life we follow her early life in the Dunquin while the next show will look at her life on the Great Blasket, an island off the coast of Kerry.

IRELAND - WikiVidi Documentary
Ireland is an island in the North Atlantic. It is separated from Great Britain to its east by the North Channel, the Irish Sea, and St George's Channel. Ireland is the second-largest island of the British Isles, the third-largest in Europe, and the twentieth-largest on Earth. Politically, Ireland is divided between the Republic of Ireland , which covers five-sixths of the island, and Northern Ireland, which is part of the United Kingdom, in the northeast of the island. In 2011, the population of Ireland was about 6.4 million, ranking it the second-most populous island in Europe after Great Britain. Just under 4.6 million live in the Republic of Ireland and just over 1.8 million live in Northern Ireland. The island's geography comprises relatively low-lying mountains surrounding a central plain, with several navigable rivers extending inland. The island has lush vegetation, a product of its mild, but changeable climate which is free of extremes in temperature. Thick woodlands covered...

RICHARD III of ENGLAND - WikiVidi Documentary
Richard III was King of England from 1483 until his death in 1485, at the age of 32, in the Battle of Bosworth Field. He was the last king of the House of York and the last of the Plantagenet dynasty. His defeat at Bosworth Field, the last decisive battle of the Wars of the Roses, marked the end of the Middle Ages in England. He is the subject of the historical play Richard III by William Shakespeare. When his brother King Edward IV died in April 1483, Richard was named Lord Protector of the realm for Edward's eldest son and successor, the 12-year-old Edward V. Arrangements were made for Edward's coronation on 22 June 1483; but, before the young king could be crowned, the marriage of his parents was declared bigamous and therefore invalid, making their children officially illegitimate and thus barring them from inheriting the throne. On 25 June, an assembly of Lords and commoners endorsed a declaration to this effect and proclaimed Richard the rightful king. The following day, Richar...
