Plovdiv, Bulgaria - Travel Around The World | Top best places to visit in Plovdiv
Top best places to visit in Plovdiv, Bulgaria
Plovdiv is the second largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest cities in the world.
Plovdiv has evidence of habitation since the 6th millennium BC. It has historically developed on seven hills and that’s why it is often referred to as the City of the Seven Hills.
The main city plaza is the Central Square. It used to be a Forum Romanum, the center of ancient public life.
Adjacent to the square is the Garden of Tsar Simeon, a beautiful park with gorgeous singing fountains.
The square is connected to the main walking street, known as Glavnata. The pedestrian zone full of shops, galleries, and cafes.
Along this street is the starting point of many guided tours, located just in front of the Municipality Building.
The street leads to two interesting districts. A bohemian quarter full of artists and pubs, the Kapana.
And to the very enjoyable Old Town, which is free of cars in this area with many cobblestone streets and historic houses turned into museums.
Almost every house in the Old Town has its characteristic exterior and interior decoration.
Plovdiv was selected as the European Capital of Culture thanks to its numerous museums, galleries and cultural events.
Plovdiv has been a gathering center for the Orthodox Christians for centuries, so there are several churches worth a visit, such as:
The Virgin Mary Church,
The very impressive St Marina Church with a unique pillar arcade.
And the Church of St Constantine and Helena which is considered to be among the oldest churches in Bulgaria.
Two mosques have remained in the city since the Ottoman era.
The Imarethane Mosque with different, interesting minaret.
And, in the center, the Dzhumaya Mosque.
Next to it, at the end of Glavnata, is the Ancient Stadium from the Roman times.
Plovdiv was known for most of its history by the name Philippopolis. There are many remains from those times, like:
The Roman Odeon.
The Roman Amphitheater, probably the most famous tourist attraction in the city.
The Small Basilica, the ruins of the early Christian church in recently restored building.
The Eastern Gate, one of the three entrances of the ancient city.
The Roman Fortress, with parts of defensive walls, towers and ancient buildings.
From the fort there is a great view of Plovdiv.

Walking around PLOVDIV, Bulgaria ???????? | Top sights and attractions
IF YOU LIKE WHAT YOU'RE SEEING, REMEMBER TO LIKE THIS VIDEO ON YOUTUBE, SHARE IT ON SOCIAL MEDIA, SUBSCRIBE AND HELP THIS CHANNEL TO GROW THIS YEAR! I played around with my usual editing style this time and decided to add a voice-over to this video, which explains a few facts about the city. Leave your feedback below in the comments section. :)
VIDEO DESCRIPTION:
Plovdiv is the second-largest city in Bulgaria and one of the oldest cities in Europe, dating back to 6000 BC. Today, Plovdiv is a city with a rich historical and cultural heritage and attracts an increasing number of international visitors. In 2019, Plovdiv will be the European Capital of Culture.
The Old Town features cobblestone streets and 150-year old residences with beautifully painted facades. From the top of the hill, you can admire the panoramic views of the city. A must-see in Old Town is the Ancient Roman Theatre. It was built in the 2nd century and rediscovered in the 1970s during a construction project. In summer, the theatre hosts open-air concerts and opera performances. It is vast in size and can seat up to 7,000 people.
Kapana, which literally translates into “The Trap”, used to be a center for craftsmen a few hundred years back. This part of town was neglected for many years and left to decay. Recently, however, most buildings were renovated, the area was pedestrianized and has become Plovdiv’s young and vibrant creative quarter. Walking around the colorful buildings, you will find galleries, workshops, trendy cafés, restaurants and shops, as well as other art spaces. Staying overnight in this part of town turned out to be a great idea.
Plovdiv is built on six hills. Actually, there used to be seven, but one of them was destroyed in the late 19th and early 20th century and its rocks were used for most of the city’s pavement. The hills offer some pretty scenic panoramic views of the city and are also great for hiking.
One of them is Sahat tepe, or Clock hill, named after the clock tower on the top.
Further west, trails lead up to Bunarzhik, the Liberators Hill. On the top, there is the Alyosha monument, an 11-meter or 36-foot tall concrete statue of a Soviet soldier. It was erected in the 1950s, when Bulgaria was still a socialist republic and a satellite state of the Soviet Union. The area around the monument is great to sit and admire the mountains rising up on the horizon.

Walking in PLOVDIV / Bulgaria ????????- 4K 60fps (UHD)
Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив) is one of the oldest cities in Europe and the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Located in Southern Bulgaria it is one European Capital of Culture in 2019.
We start our walk in the newer part of Plovdiv at the Maritsa River in the North of the inner city. From there we head to the Nebet Tepe hill - one of the 7 hills of the city. Old Plovdiv up there ( 9:00 ) is a tourist attraction with old houses along cobble stoned streets. The archaeological area also provides a nice view over the area.
The main attraction is the Roman-era Ancient Theatre of Philippopolis which hosts concert events. The sun comes out now and we head down to the city centre which has seen renovations over the last couple of years. The shoppingstreet Otets Paisiy is built around the Ancient Stadium of Philipopolis and Dzhumaya Mosque.
There is more to see here yet some sights seem under constructions. We end the walking tour after one hour at Garden of Tsar Simeon.

Пловдив / Plovdiv Bulgaria by Drone
Plovdiv (Bulgarian: Пловдив, pronounced [ˈpɫɔvdif]) is the second-largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia, with a city population of 346,893 as of 2018 and 675,000 in the greater metropolitan area. Plovdiv is the culture capital of Bulgaria. It is an important economic, transport, cultural, and educational center. There is evidence of habitation in Plovdiv dating back to the 6th millennium BCE, when the first Neolithic settlements were established. It has been considered to be one of the oldest cities in the world.
During most of its recorded history, Plovdiv was known in the West by the name Philippopolis (Greek: Φιλιππούπολη; Turkish: Filibe; Philip's Town) after Philip II of Macedon conquered the city in the 4th century BCE. The city was originally a Thracian settlement[4] and subsequently was invaded by Persians, Greeks, Celts, Romans, Goths, Huns, Bulgars, Slavs, Rus people, Crusaders, and Turks. On 4 January 1878, at the end of the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), Plovdiv was taken away from Ottoman rule by the Russian army. It remained within the borders of Bulgaria until July of the same year, when it became the capital of the autonomous Ottoman region of Eastern Rumelia. In 1885, Plovdiv and Eastern Rumelia joined Bulgaria.
Plovdiv is situated in a fertile region of south-central Bulgaria on the two banks of the Maritsa River. The city has historically developed on seven syenite hills, some of which are 250 metres (820 feet) high. Because of these hills, Plovdiv is often referred to in Bulgaria as The City of the Seven Hills.
Plovdiv is host to a huge variety of cultural events such as the International Fair Plovdiv, the international theatrical festival A stage on a crossroad, the TV festival The golden chest, and many more novel festivals, such as Night/Plovdiv in September, Kapana Fest, and Opera Open. There are many preserved ruins such as the ancient Plovdiv Roman theatre, a Roman odeon, a Roman aqueduct, the Plovdiv Roman Stadium, the archaeological complex Eirene, and others.
The oldest American educational institution outside the United States, the American College of Sofia, was founded in Plovdiv in 1860 and later moved to Sofia.
On 5 September 2014, Plovdiv was selected as the Bulgarian host of the European Capital of Culture 2019 alongside the Italian city of Matera.[5] This happened with the help of the Municipal Foundation Plovdiv 2019″, a non-government organization, which was established in 2011 by Plovdiv's City Council whose main objectives were to develop and to prepare Plovdiv's bid book for European Capital of Culture in 2019.
