EXPLORING FÜSSEN, the perfect MEDIEVAL TOWN in GERMANY, what to see, top sites ????
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the beautiful town of Füssen which is a Bavarian town in Germany, just north of the Austrian border. Its Gothic castle, Hohes Schloss, houses a regional art museum. The museum of St. Mang's abbey showcases Füssen's violin- and lute-making industry. The eclectic Neuschwanstein Castle and Hohenschwangau Castle lie southeast of the town. Nearby Tegelberg mountain has a ski resort, a panoramic cable car and an alpine slide.
Germany is a Western European country with a landscape of forests, rivers, mountain ranges and North Sea beaches. It has over 2 millennia of history. Berlin, its capital, is home to art and nightlife scenes, the Brandenburg Gate and many sites relating to WWII. Munich is known for its Oktoberfest and beer halls, including the 16th-century Hofbräuhaus. Frankfurt, with its skyscrapers, houses the European Central Bank.

Travel Germany - Füssen, Neuschwanstein Castle & More
Füssen is most famous for two historic castles, (and a third, even older castle, can be found tucked-away in the old town).
Neuschwanstein Castle was built by the reclusive King Ludwig II of Bavaria, who died in 1886 before the monument was completely finished. It immediately became a popular tourist attraction.
Nearby an older palace, Hohenschwangau Castle, provides a more realistic glimpse of royal life. The old High Palace in Füssen retains it's medieval character, and houses part of the Bavarian State Collection of Paintings.
The city itself is charming, and is surrounded by spectacular mountain scenery.
Füssen - Travel Germany
Füssen was settled in Roman times, on the Via Claudia Augusta, a road that leads southwards to northern Italy and northwards to Augusta Vindelicum (today's Augsburg), the former regional capital of the Roman province Raetia. The original name of Füssen was Foetes, or Foetibus (inflected), which derives from Latin Fauces, meaning gorge, probably referring to the Lech gorge. In Late Antiquity Füssen was the home of a part of the Legio III Italica, which was stationed there to guard the important trade route over the Alps.

Füssen, Bavaria, Germany.
Füssen is at either the beginning or the end of the romantic road depending on which way you are traveling. It’s beyond cute, super friendly, and the Lech river runs with an extraordinary shade of bright green when the light hits it the right way. Right near the Austrian border, right near Neuschwanstein Castle and damn near perfect. Tschüss Füssen!

Munich and the Foothills of the Alps
Rick Steves' Europe Travel Guide | In Munich, where locals specialize in good living, we visit boisterous markets and go-for-Baroque palaces, while office workers surf in the Isar River. Heading into the foothills of the Alps, we tour the fairy-tale castles of Mad King Ludwig, and climb to the highest point in Germany atop the Zugspitze. Then we cross into Tirol to conquer a desolate ruined castle. © 2002 Rick Steves' Europe

Neuschwanstein Castle - near Füssen, Germany
Neuschwanstein Castle, near the town of Fussen Germany was commissioned by Ludwig II of Bavaria. He grew up in nearby Hohenschwangau Castle that had been built by his father King Maximilian II of Bavaria. (please see my complete detailed You Tube video upload I did for that castle also)
By now Ludwig was known as Mad King Ludwig due to his extravagant spending habits. He did mysteriously a few years later and the castle was never completed. It is now one of the main tourist attractions in Germany & has also been the inspiration for Walt Disney's fairy-tale castle in Disneyland.
When I was a small child, I used to see Neuschwanstein up on the hill but my parents never took me up there to see it. It took a return trip 55 years later for me to finally get the chance to see it up close.
Located on the Romantic Road (Romantische Strasse), it is one of the very last stops on that road. As always, Ed does most of the video filming (and narration that you'll hear), I did most of the still photography and then edited it all and created the final upload that you see here.
