Switzerland's Jungfrau Region: Interlaken and Swiss Military Secrets
Interlaken, one of the Alps' original resorts, is a useful springboard for alpine thrills. And, when the famous peaks get socked in by clouds, you can choose from some interesting lowland options. In this town, four innocent-looking hay barns conceal a network of tunnels connecting several big guns. Many of these once top-secret sites are now open to the public as museums. Switzerland's Jungfrau Region: Best of the Alps
© 2002 Rick Steves' Europe | If Heidi is alive, she's in this sky-high corner of the Swiss Alps, with cowbells ringing on breathtaking ridges. After settling into a traditional village where locals scythe hay by hand, we hike, bike, blast an alphorn, get sprayed by waterfalls raging deep inside a mountain, and munch muesli for breakfast at 10,000 feet. For a finale, we ride Europe's highest railway up the mighty Jungfrau for hot cocoa, glacier sledding, and oh-wow views.

Train trip to the Jungfrau Mountain at the Top of Europe, near Interlaken and Grindelwald, Switzerland. Europe's highest railroad line will bring you up to a spectacular world of perpetual winter, dominated by massive, snow-covered peaks reaching over 13,000 feet high and surrounding the continent's longest glacier. Many consider the train ride up one of the finest, most picturesque in the world, where getting to the top is half the fun. The journey from Interlaken to Grindlewald can be easily made on the Bernese Overland railway, and it travels on a scenic route through the valley and along the river and passes several villages. There are magnificent mountain views all along the way.
The hundred-year-old rail line from Kleine Scheidegg to the Jungfraujoch is one of Europe's great engineering wonders, the world's highest subway climbing through four miles of tunnels inside the rock. The beginning of this 50-minute journey is not underground, and momentarily offers a great view; so sit on the right side of the train. The train makes two brief stops enroute to let everyone out for a walk through short tunnels to viewing stations, where you look through windows at the nearby mountain peaks and the landscapes far below.
Upon arrival at the end of the rail line, you walk through an ice tunnel decorated with ice carvings and then approach a sight too amazing for description or film. You really have to pay your dues and go there in person to experience the exhilaration of standing at the top of the world, surrounded by Alpine giants of snow. The observation deck and snowfield are at 11,350 feet, flanked by the jagged peaks of the Jungfrau (13,642 ft.) and the Mönch (13,449 ft.), which form a valley that cradles the Aletsch Galcier, an endless field of snow that stretches 13 miles to the horizon.
Plan on spending an hour or two at the top, playing in the snow and exploring the various levels and exhibits of the visitor center, then catch a convenient train back down the route you came. You return to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can change trains for a different return route that will take you through Wengen and down to Lauterbrunnen.

The town of Interlaken makes a perfect home base for exploring the beautiful mountains all around the central region of Switzerland.
In this segment we will take a quick look at what Interlaken has to offer. The advantages of staying in Interlaken are the many hotels, restaurants and shops, and wonderful train and bus connections to get up to the mountain sites. Some of the world's most spectacular mountain scenery is waiting for you just outside of Interlaken in the heart of the Swiss Alps.
Europe's longest glacier -- four famous mountain peaks: the Monk, Eiger, Jungfrau and Shilthorn -- astonishingly beautiful Lauterbrunnen Valley, my favorite -- Europe's highest railroad station, delightful mountain villages of Grindelwald, Wengen and Murren -- two large lakes with tour boat service -- and some fascinating nearby cities.
We have many other movies about the surrounding mountains and valleys you can find on our YouTube channel and on our website.
All of these attractions are close to the town of Interlaken which makes a perfect base from which to explore the region. There are nearly 100 hotels and guest houses in all price ranges in the city. While Interlaken is attractive with excellent supply of these hotels shops and restaurants, and there's a pretty park in the middle, frankly it is not one of Switzerland's really quaint and traditional villages. You don't come to this area just to see Interlaken. Instead it's a practical tourist center with fine support services, excellent rail and boat connections, and a compactness that makes for easy walking anywhere in town. There's also a large casino filled with slot machines for some evening amusement. The nearby surrounding peaks and valleys are your main reason for being in Interlaken so your time in town is mostly for eating and sleeping, doing a little shopping, in order to gear up for the excursions into the mountains.
For the more adventurous you can go paragliding. That's right even if you don't know anything about it you can go with a pilot and enjoy tandem paraglide ride. They'll drive you up to the hills and then you do a little walking, hike up further up on the slope, and you jump off, and the payoff is you get to glide down and enjoy a fantastic view.
Or for something less adventurous you can just rent a bicycle and go peddle around. There's a lot to see in the Interlaken area. The town itself is relatively flat and you can peddle through the shopping areas and up into the residential zones.
As you can see the main activity in town is shopping -- all sorts of souvenirs for sale, clothing, you can buy some hiking gear. It's a great place for backpacks, for boots, hats, clothing of all kinds, walking sticks and a T-shirt that says Interlaken.
There's not much of a pedestrian zone that's free of automobiles here but they do have one little lane that's for pedestrians. But the rest of town is very friendly for walking around, the sidewalks are wide and there's always things to look at and things to do.
While you have many lovely hotels to pick from there's no question that one of them stands out above all the others. It's the Victoria Jungfrau Grand Hotel and Spa Five-Star, ultra-deluxe. Even if you cannot afford to spend the night here you might enjoy a meal in one of their various restaurants and you can even have a nice meal on their front terrace with a view looking up towards the Jungfrau.
This great meadow is right next to the one major street of town, the Hohweg, which is beautifully landscaped and kept in a semi-natural state with flowers and trees and the meadow along one side and grand hotels on the other.
If you're a gambler of course there is a casino like there is in most Swiss towns and it's an elegant place. It's part of the Kursal complex which for 100 years has been a cultural center of the city, set in a beautiful park with fountains and flowers.
Tourists have been coming to Interlaken and the area since about 1800 when it was first popularized by some romantic painters and then tourism really increased in the 1890s and early 1900s with the opening of railway service.
There is a quiet residential area behind the main commercial town. Population of Interlaken is quite small, just about 5000 people, many of them living in traditional chalet-style houses that really make something for you to have a look at. So that's another nice activity -- take a stroll in the residential neighborhood.

Interlaken (German pronunciation: [ˈɪntɐlakn̩]; lit.: between lakes) is a statistic town and municipality in the Interlaken-Oberhasli administrative district in the Swiss canton of Bern. It is an important and well-known tourist destination in the Bernese Highlands region of the Swiss Alps, and the main transport gateway to the mountains and lakes of that region.
The town is located on the flat alluvial land called Bödeli between the two Lakes of Brienz to the east and Thun to the west and alongside the river Aare, which flows from one to the other. Transport routes to the east and west alongside the lakes are complemented by a route southwards into the near mountain resorts and high mountains, e.g. the famous high Alpine peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau, following upwards the Lütschine.
Interlaken is the central town of a Small Agglomeration with the same name of 23,300 inhabitants.[3]
The official language of Interlaken is (the Swiss variety of Standard) German, but the main spoken language is the local variant of the Alemannic Swiss German dialect.

Interlaken to Jungfraujoch Tour | The Alpine Sensation and Ice Palace in Jungfrau | Tyrolienine fun
Vlog by Minahil Naeem Qazi
We went to #Switzerland in the month of July.
It was a memorable trip. As you know , It is known as the Heaven on the Earth. And no doubt, there is a great beauty.
Here is our trip of #Jungfraujoch. From Interlaken,we took train and in this route , we changed train 2 times. Once from Lauterbrunnen station and second from Klein Scheidegg Station.
Interlaken means a place located between the lakes.
Jungfraujoch is the #Top_of_Europe which is 3454m (11333ft) above sea level.
There was below zero temperature in July.
There are many tourist attractions in Jungfrau e.g Alpine Sensation, Ice Palace, Plateau.
There are also some snow sports for tourists. For example,
Ski & board
Tyrolienine
Snow tubing
Sledge park
We did Tyrolienine, it was a great fun but you must have to wear perfect clothes for this freezing temperature.
Because after Tyrolienine, we felt so much cold.
The Swiss Alps in Jungfrau is so captivating and beautiful.
Hope you will like our vlog.

Interlaken Town: Interlaken is a resort town in the Bernese Oberland region of Switzerland. It is located on a narrow stretch of land between two lakes - Lake Thun and Lake Brienz, the twin lakes with emerald color of water. Interlaken is used as a gateway to the wonderful alpine world of Switzerland. There are several traditional alpine villages and resorts around Interlaken. The region is filled with dense forests, glaciers, water falls, alpine meadows and numerous hiking/biking trails. Interestingly, this region has been immensely popular with Bollywood film makers. Many travelers and adventure sports enthusiasts use Interlaken town as their base camp. The Höheweg is Interlaken's main street. While strolling on the Hoheweg one can see opulent hotels, upscale shops and many restaurants. This street is always bustling with visitors. Paragliding over the town and boat ride in Lake thun are very popular among visitors. Entire region is very well connected by a dense network of public transport - Swiss railways, buses and boats.
Thun: Thun is a small yet very elegant town, just 30 min away Interlaken. It is located where Aare river flows into Lake Thun. There are several medieval wooden bridges crisscrossing the town. Youngsters enjoy swimming and surfing in crystal clear blue water of the river. The area where the town stands today has been inhabited from Neolithic period. Schloss Thun - The magnificent castle of Thun is located on top of a small hill, overlooking the city center. It was built in 12th century by the Duke, now houses a museum. It is a heritage site of national significance. Well preserved, royal and majestic.
Lauterbrunnen: It takes 20 min from Interlaken by train to reach Lauterbrunnen. It is a regional mountain train that goes till Jungfrau. The route itself is very scenic, passing through many small villages and running along with rivers. Lauterbrunnen is small sleepy village, famous for it's vertical cliffs and the Staubbach Falls. It is located in a valley known its 72 waterfalls. The Staubbach Falls is 300 meter high, where water drops from a hanging valley end at the cliff. The waterfall is a one of the major attractions in the region. Staubbach Falls base is just 1 KM from the Lauterbrunnen railway station. Though it dries up in winters. One can admire this natural beauty for hours. It very relaxing and comforting watch this waterfall after a long walk from the railway station.
Wengen: Another 15 min train ride away from Lauterbrunnen is the mountain village of Wengen. The village is at 1200 meter above sea level, overlooking Lauterbrunnen valley. It is one of the car-free villages which can reached only by a train. Wengen is known for hosting ski races and tournaments. A hub of recreational activities. One can get a clear view of Jungfrau peak from the village. The village has a main street close to the railway station. The tourist information center of the village provides all necessary information, maps and brochures about the region.
Murren: It takes a special cable cart ride, followed by a mountain train ride to reach Murren. Located at 1600 meter altitude, air can't get fresher than this. Originally a farming village, but with increase in tourism both in summers and winters it has become one of the richest villages in Switzerland. Its a car-free village which can be easily explored by foot. There is no better place in Switzerland to enjoy nature.
Bollywood: Over 300 Indian movies have been shot in Switzerland and the region of Interlaken has been the most popular destination.

Besides the snow and the mountain, the tunnel is something to look out for at Jungfraujoch in Switzerland. The Top of Europe as it is called, is a great example of human endurance and hard work. Hundreds of labourers and engineers made this possible more than hundred years ago. Today, millions of tourists like us visit this place every year.
