'This is the James Bond style entrance': The ESB plant that's hidden deep inside a Wicklow mountain
NESTLED INTO THE Wicklow Mountains is the ESB's hydroelectric power station Turlough Hill.
Construction began 50 years ago and the facility, much of which is built deep within the mountain, started generating power in 1974.
We were given a tour of the site's reservoirs and tunnels to find out how it all works.

Turlough Hill Wicklow Gap Full Descent East towards Laragh 1080P Garmin VIRB
Cycling descent from the top of Turlough Hill all the way down to the Wicklow Gap road between Laragh and Glendalough. Strong tailwind so the road section is fast enough. Recorded on a Garmin VIRB Basic and matched up with data from a Garmin Edge 800 incl HRM and speed/cadence. High speed just below 80km/h hit 77 I think.

Lara interviews Dr Cara Augustenborg at Turlough Hill Hydroelectric station
Lara visits Turlough Hill, a pumped storage power station in the Wicklow Mountains built in the 1970s. During peak demands it generates power by releasing water from the upper reservoir to the lower lake, during periods of low demand water is pumped back up to be used again. Supplying extra power at times of peak demand is one of the grid’s key functions but storing electricity at large enough scale to do this, is difficult. Lara interviews climate scientist Dr Cara Augustenborg on how Electric Vehicles could help with this in the future.

V74 - Glendalough during winter in our T6 California
Hi Folks,
We went for a winter visit to Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains in the California. We flew the Mavic but the snow/rain was just too heavy. Vanessa made us some sausage sambo's and a lovely cup of coffee in the van. I edited the video using DaVinci Resolve 14 - it was my first attempt at using it since I downloaded it on Saturday - its complicated but good...
Thanks for watching! JVC

Morning in Wicklow Mountains
The Wicklow Mountains (Irish: Sléibhte Chill Mhantáin (older Irish name Sliabh Cualann from their location in the territory of Cualu); including at the northern end the Dublin Mountains) are a range of mountains in the southeast of Ireland. They run in a north-south direction from south County Dublin across County Wicklow and into County Wexford. Lugnaquilla is the highest peak in the range at 925 m (3035 ft), Mullaghcleevaun at 847 m (2,780 ft) is the second highest.
The River Slaney has its source southwest of Lugnaquilla and then flows south along the western slopes of the mountains for some 72 km (45 mi) before entering the St George's Channel at Wexford. The Turlough Hill power station is the only pumped storage hydroelectricity scheme in Ireland; it is located on the Wicklow Gap midway between Hollywood and Glendalough.
Wicklow Mountains National Park was established by the government in 1991 and is managed by the National Parks and Wildlife Service. The whole area is much frequented, especially at weekends, by Dubliners, as the region offers multiple choices of recreation, ranging from fishing to rafting to hill walking. Also in its midst lies the monastic settlement of Glendalough, believed to have been founded by St. Kevin, and now a popular tourist attraction; as well as Powerscourt Waterfall, the highest waterfall in Ireland.
The southern limits of the Wicklow Mountains are set by Croghan Mountain, the highest point on the Wicklow-Wexford border and the scene (in the 19th century) of Ireland's only Gold Rush.

lake ouler co wicklow
Lough Ouler Co Wicklow 19 july 2018
lough Ouler is a corrie lake at the base of Tonelagee, one of Wicklow's most imposing mountains. From the road it's a good 45- 55 minute walk uphill and with a fair bit of effort involved.
The rewards are worth the effort, however, and as you come over the brow of the hill the lake appears dramatically, quiet and shining, nestling at the foot of this impressive mountain. The water is dark but fresh. As for all lakes you need to be extra careful and look out for submerged rocks. We got in from the rocks on the right hand side.
Not too many people swim here but this is a well used route for walkers heading up the mountain. Skinny dippers be warned.
