VALPARAISO Tour in 5 MINUTES!!! (303 | Chile Travel VLOG)
2 October 2019 - Day 41 - Valparaiso
VLOG 303
Today we head to the other side of town to take a walking tour of Valparaiso!! We take a trolley bus from our hostel to Plaza Sotomayor where we start our tour with @tours4tips! ????????
We learn about the history of Valparaiso from its development into one of the thriving port cities of its time, to it’s decline and rise of bohemian life. We take an ascensor to the top of the two main tourist hill Cerro Alegre and Cerro Concepcion. With the 45 hills that comprise this town, it was and still is the way for locals and tourists alike to scene up the hills even after over 100 years! ????????????
With the decline of wealth and businesses came the flurry of creativity and here is where we see the windy streets and endless staircases filled with street art. The thing which I found most intriguing were the context behind some of the artwork, from the times of the socialist president to the dictatorship, to nowadays where there is nation wide protests due to lack of education funding. ????????????
Nestled within these narrow streets are funky bars and cafes to suit just about anyone taste where it transforms into a busy area known for its nightlife. We ditch the camera and head out into town for the night, and try out some of Chile’s we’ll known drinks the Pisco Sour and the Terremotto - literally meaning an earthquake. A drink which has certainly earned its name as by the end of the night @menchacalaca was wobbly on her feet and felt the ground shake. Lol!! ????????????

Quick Trips and Tips: Santiago Chile 4k
Quick Tips Video: ( Detailed Video on pricing, how to get around, areas to stay...ex.)
In this video you will follow me along on my quick trip to Santiago. I got to experience their beautiful culture and visited:
Cajon Del Maipo
Santa Rita Winery
Cerro San Cristobal and Cerro Santa Lucia
Iglesia San Francisco and Metropolitan Cathedralwalked around all the cool neighborhoods like Barrio Buenavista and Lastarria.
Patio Buenavista btw is awesome for nightlife and food.
Mercado Central and Artesenar are awesome for shopping.
Santiago is the capital and largest city of Chile. It is the center of Chile's largest and the most densely populated conurbation. The city is entirely located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706 ft) above sea level.
Founded in 1541 by the Spanish conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.
Valparaiso Chile - Free City Tour
City tour with Tours4Tips through Valparaiso Conception. Best way to get around all the hills is to use the Ascensors (Funiculars). There is only one real elevator which we also used.
This 3 hour walking tour from port to high hills will help you find your feet and lose your mind as you discover the Heritage Site of Valparaiso.
In Valparaiso it is easy to get lost in the maze of alleyways and street art. We lead you around not only enhancing your sense of direction but filling you with our knowledge and wisdom of locally named “Valpo”. An adventure that takes you through your senses of taste, smell, vision and laughter (ok that last one might not be a sense, but if it was it’s going to be tickled).
Today you will ride a 100 year old funicular, learn about Chileans favorite food and find out which Valpo street dog is called David Bowie. Find your local freelance Wally guide at Plaza Sotomayor at 3pm everyday rain or shine! If that wasn’t exciting enough for you to read, then get this, it is a pay-what-you-feel tour. The pressure is released, get your kicks on and enjoy discovering Chiles pride and joy!
Why take THIS tour, Why THIS us? Taking a wander with your freelance Wally guide is like hanging out with your older brothers cool friend, they know all the cool places in town! Find out where to eat, drink and party along with the little quirks of Valpo only a local would know. All this along with the town’s cultural, political, architectural and religious background.
It’s impossible to discover Valpo by bus or vehicle, walking is the only way to see the hidden gems. We choose our freelance guides on the basis of how much they love Valparaiso. If they convince us of this as well as making us laugh and feeling comfortable we know they can make you as passionate as Valpo as we are. If you aren’t convinced yet you can check us out on TripAdvisor, we have maaaad references! And if you still ain’t satisfied by the end, you don’t have to pay a single peso!
Who should NOT take this tour? If you hate meeting new people or seeing controversial if not a little offensive art then you are in the wrong place completely. Now that you are in a bit of a smaller town we like to be more interactive and friendly. In our tours people get to know each other and learn each other’s stories. If you are a more traditional type that likes a bright white clean house then you may not like Valpo. All the houses here look like they have been sprinkled on by a concoction of colour and art.

Final Day in Valparaiso (walking tour)

Kim and Kathleen's bus trip to Valparaiso
Day 17 Day Trip To Valparaiso
Today's guide will be Albero (59 years old, long haired 178cm BMI 26%) the air is fresh 8deg c , it's Sunday morning and we are excited. Bring it on Valparaiso or bust.
In Santiago there are lots of dogs wandering the streets. Albero explained that it's a custom for the elderly to feed and look after the dogs.
It's 120 km from Santiago to Valparaiso, at first you leave the smog-filled basin of Santiago, then a dry area before you go over the mountains to the lush valley of agriculture (avocado is the big crop), then another valley called Casablanca which is one of the grape growing regions. It's amazing, they have fans and heaters to warm the air to protect the grapes in cold weather. Now passing walnut plantation. Kathleen has gone quiet, she's tired, I have to buy some batteries next stop. Now we have stopped at a wine barn, so everyone has lined up to sample free wine and I'm trying to encourage them to get back on the bus. It's a trip to Valparaiso not a wine tour, so this is what free grog does; they lose their focus.
We have made it to Valparaiso and first the bus drives us around the colourful part of town. This is the district that you see on all the ads. Murals adorn the walls, the doors, everything but they forget to show the graffiti. Funiculars climbing the steep streets but only a few. There are actually 10 but we only saw 2.
I'm really excited to walk the streets, get up close to the graffiti, mix with artists and ride the funicular.
The bus has now taken us down to the harbour, lots of colourful little boats, people screaming in Spanish to come and ride their boat, I think. There is a lady selling chocolate coated strawberries which are fantastic. We must be doing the walking thing from here.
Wrong, we are back on the bus for a tour of the different districts of Valparaiso. The tour of the suburbs is finished we must be doing the walking thing now, wrong.
We are now driving along the harbour until it turns into what you could say is a beach but far too cold to go in the water. Oh no, we are stopping to go for lunch and Albero has said take your time about an hour and a half or so. The lunch is beautiful, it's been one hour and we are finished. The both of us are starting to wonder if we are ever going to go for a walk around that lovely looking area that you see on all the post cards.
Jump back in the bus after waiting two hours for the ladies to finish lunch, we now know we have missed the cool part of Valparaiso even before Albero announced ok we are going back now. Confused and upset we returned to Santiago. Kathleen had basically worked out what happened but it was not until the next morning when Rubén Campos the driver to the airport gave us the run down on the city and how tours are designed.
Rubén said you pick up all your guests from the hotel and then arrange the day's outings to suit and if you have a group of ladies from Argentina and Brazil all they want to do is shop and eat.
Travel Notes
1. Don't get on a bus with a group of ladies that want to shop and eat
