Canadian expat runs local food tours for foreigners in SW China’s Chengdu
For tourists in the Chinese city of Chengdu, it is difficult to get a full experience of its many charms during a short visit. That’s where Canadian food writer and long-time Chengdu dweller Jordan Porter spotted an opportunity, in running local food tours for foreign visitors. “I wanted to continually try and find new things in the city. And food is a big part of it,” he says. Ready for a gourmet adventure? Let’s go!

Visit my new blog for details about where to eat in Chengdu:
I visited this morning market on a Sunday morning in Chengdu at 8am with an empty stomach and money to blow with the goal of tasting foods and chatting with as many locals as possible. This is a true China experience. It was so busy, with so many people, so many things to buy and look at, tons of vegetables, meat, live chickens, live hens, live roosters, everything you could want really. Fresh handmade noodles, fresh Sichuan cold liangbancai, and a huge meat market deli area with hanging pork and beef to choose from. All of the locals were friendly and talkative, although a bit surprised to see a foreigner walking through the area!
If you're visiting China as a tourist, you'll definitely want to take a walk through a busy morning market like this. There are countless street foods to try and people to chat to (If you speak a little mandarin). This market was mind blowing!
Rather than trying hot pot in Chengdu or hot pot in Chongqing, you could try some way cooler food in Chengdu at local market like this. This should be a top priority in my opinion!
Chinese cuisine is so diverse, and I consider myself lucky to be able to live in Sichuan, eating Sichuan food everyday, tasting all the top Chinese foods to try whenever I want. I've decided to stay living in China for at least another 2 or 3 years to get the feel of it and eat as much as I can!

I visited this busy Chinese restaurant on a Saturday early afternoon at around 11:30 am with already two bowls of noodles in my stomach and looking for more. My goal was to taste as much food and chat with as many locals as possible, that's the true China experience. It was so busy, with so many people, there were so many different foods to eat and look at, tons of vegetable dishes, meat dishes, everything you could want really.
However, if you go to the place I did, DO NOT order the intestine dish. It was disgusting.
Instead of trying hot pot in Chengdu or hot pot in Chongqing, you could try some way cooler food in Chengdu at local fly restaurant like this. This should be a top priority for traveling in China in my opinion!
Chinese cuisine is so diverse, and I consider myself lucky to be able to live in Sichuan, eating Sichuan food everyday, tasting all the top Chinese foods to try whenever I want.

2.The famous fly restaurant lunch 叁无粉蒸 (sān wú fěn zhēng)
Address: 建设路54号(猛追湾横街中部)
3 The sliced beef in the Chinese muslim area (Chinese Halal Food).

Address: 成华区土桥北街6号
This one is a bit far out as well, but this one was definitely worth the long subway ride out. It's right near Jingke beilu subway station on line 2.

The two lunch spots we visited had some amazing street food. The first place had a delicious street yangroutang AKA lamb soup, and the second place served up some delicious pig brain, frog, and fish eggs. Both places were in this beautiful ancient village that you can enjoy strolling through and enjoying the scenery and of course, delicious street food restaurants! There were so many authentic Chinese recipes that the chefs were making, it will blow you away! All of it had an amazing home-cooked flavour!
When you come this DEEp in Sichuan, the food gets spicier and spicier as you go, so make sure to prepare yourself, cause sometimes it gets super hot!! To finish the day off, we went into the back of a little neighbourhood and enjoyed some amazing rabbit in a bowl. It was so spicy and fragrant because it had a bunch of mushrooms and roast peanuts inside!
You can follow along this whole tea horse road series as we travel through China on a 6 week street food tour and Chinese cuisine journey all the way through Sichuan and then down south into Yunnan to eat and taste the best, authentic, and spiciest street foods, enjoying the company of friendly locals along the way! In this food video travel vlog, I'm (Trevor James, The Food Ranger), bringing you to eat some of the most UNIQUE Chinese noodles!
We're starting the noodle tour in Beijing, China, and enjoying a huge bowl of Beijing Zhajiangmian AKA Beijing Zhajiang noodles, one of the most fragrant and satisfying noodle chews you'll ever experience. AND, we're complimenting that bowl of Beijing noodles with a delicious bowl of pork organ stew, an intense organ aroma stew with chopped intestines and lungs. Delicious!
After traveling to Beijing to eat noodles, we're flying direct into Lanzhou, the home of the world famous muslim Chinese street food. Here, the local Hui chinese cook up some of the best Halal Chinese food in the world, and have a UNIQUE specialty that is worth flying for, the Lanzhou lamian, AKA Lanzhou ramen AKA lanzhou beef noodle soup! WOW! This is one of the BEST noodle dishes you'll ever taste! And watching the extremely tasty Lanzhou noodles being hand pulled is one of the most satisfying things to watch too! The beef noodle soup is made with beef fat and bone and also lots of local radish which gives it an incredibly complex and satisfying aroma to slurp on!! And you can order up as many slices of beef to put on top of your lanzhou noodles as well!
After traveling to Lanzhou, we're flying in to Chengdu to eat Sichuan food and of course, the one and only Sichuan Dan Dan noodles!!! Dan dan noodles or Dandan mian as they are called here in China are one of the most incredibly aromatic and Xiang bowls of noodles you'll ever experience. The spicy chili oil and the intense pork aroma with a slight earthy kick from pickled mustard greens is truly unlike anything in the whole world. You have to fly here to eat these! They are absolutely incredible! AND, we're topping off the noodles with a nice plump bowl of Hongyouchaoshou AKA Chinese hot chili oil wontons! They burst in your mouth with flavour and chili oil! WOWWW!!! In Chengdu, Sichuan cuisine is at the top of it's game, super flavourful and intense with Sichuan chili and peppercorn, and I definitely recommend flying in to eat it!
After Chengdu dan dan noodles, we're taking a direct flight to Shanghai to eat my personal favourite bowl of noodles in the city, and a bowl that is worth flying in direct to China to eat for, the majiang mian AKA sesame butter noodles. The noodles are full of chili oil and sesame butter mixed together, so you have this EXTREMELY satisfying nutty and spicy combo over top of springy al dente noodles, and, you can top it off with some nice spicy pork chunks! It doesn't get any better than that!! Another BIG WOW!!!
After shanghai, we're finishing this food travel video by flying in direct to Hong Kong, another world famous food destination, to eat some cantonese cuisine and some southern Chinese noodles, the ganchaoniuhe, AKA stir fried chinese rice noodles with tender slices of beef! We're visiting a local daipaidong AKA Chinese street food alley stall that is packed with hungry locals who all love eating tons of delicious Cantonese cuisine and seafood! At this daipaidong, aiwensheng, you can eat a lot of different Chinese seafoods and stir fried cantonese cuisine dishes, but we came in solely to eat the stir fried rice noodles, but we couldn't help ourselves and ordered a mud crab and some fried seafood as well because it looked so good! Another HUGE WOW!! China has some of the best food in the world, and definitely the BEST noodles in the world!!

Jin Li Ancient Street - Food, Shopping, and Fun | This is Chengdu, China
When we arrived at the gate of Jin Li Pedestrian Street, we were scared. It was packed with people. We made the mistake of going during the Chinese holiday, Mid-Autumn Festival. Luckily, we didn't chicken out. The street is made-up to look like an ancient Chengdu commercial street, which is exactly what it was 1800 years ago. We checked out the many souvenirs (lots of Panda stuff!), browsed the amazing food, and soaked in all the incredible sights. There's a ton to see on Jin Li Street. Make sure to bring your camera and an appetite.

Dali in Yunnan Province, China is a city full of hidden gems. A cute ancient city, filled with hipster coffee shops and bars with live music. And so many things to do. It also has beautiful mountains, a stunning lake and some of the best temples in China. It's no wonder that it's a must see for anybody travelling through Yunnan. I hope you enjoy this travel guide!

TABLE OF CONTENTS (a list of all of the places featured in the video)
0:16 - Bad Monkey bar in the Ancient Town
A great bar run by an English guy. They put on live music across their 2 venues in the city. Their own craft beer is really good too, it's a real cross between Camden and China!
0:40 - Exploring the Ancient Town Streets
One of the best things to do in Dali is just walk the streets of the ancient town. You can spend a few hours wandering the paved streets, admiring the traditional architecture of the Bai ethnic minority, trying their local food and snacks, and buying some souvenirs. Dali is probably the most beautiful ancient town in Yunnan, only rivalled by Lijiang (which is much busier!)
1:08 - Dali Ancient City Walls
There are 4 gates in the walls that protected the city of Dali, dating back 600 years to the Ming Dynasty and they are all really well preserved. The North Gate, East Gate, Southgate (it's coming home) and West Gate. We cycled around to see them all.
1:35 - The Three Pagodas
The 3 Pagodas of the Chongsheng Temple are a must see in Dali. You can easily cycle there from the Ancient City and spent a couple of hours exploring the temple grounds and the various gardens and towers.
3:10 - Lake Erhai
Erhai or Er Lake is an alpine fault lake outside the ancient city. Again, its very easy to cycle there. Its name means Ear-shaped Sea, due to its shape. The second largest lake in the province after Dianchi Lake in Kunming (featured in the 3rd episode of the China Series)
3:45 - Kanshan (Cangshan) Mountain
The Cang Mountains (Cangshan) are a mountain range west of Dali City. There are a few different options for cable cars to explore the heights of the mountain, we opted for the Qingbi Waterfall area. I have heard that the Horse Washing Pond is even more spectacular though.
