NATO Secretary General visits United States - Remarks to the Texas National Guard (w/subtitles)
Texas and the Defence of Freedom
NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen started the fourth day of his US trip with a visit to the Texas National Guard in Austin, the largest of its kind in the United States.
Mr Rasmussen thanked them for their long-standing contribution to NATO-led operations, including in Bosnia, Kosovo and Afghanistan -- where they also support the Agri-business Development Team in Ghazni province. The versatility, professionalism and dedication of the National Guard are well-known all over the world, the Secretary General said. And it is all the more remarkable to see that you are all volunteers. It takes a very special person to show that kind of commitment.
In a speech at the Lyndon Baines Johnson Presidential Library, Mr Rasmussen stressed the values that NATO is built on. Freedom, he said, is not a western value -- but a universal value. It's not a commodity for the few -- but one that is valuable only if shared by the many. In our NATO Alliance, nearly a billion people share not only the same values of freedom, democracy and humanity. We also share the capabilities to safeguard them.
Speaking about recent events in North Africa and the Middle East, the Secretary General said, brave people throughout the Arab world have cried out for the freedom, that America and Europe have enjoyed for many decades. Thanks to NATO. We are obliged to carry on fighting for these values.
His next step stop will be in Chicago, where he will hold a speech on the NATO-Russia cooperation. NATO Homepage:

General Motors Foundation and Chevrolet Help Distressed Neighborhoods
WASHINGTON, January 31, 2013 /3BL Media/ - The General Motors Foundation is providing a $1 million grant to Habitat for Humanity International to help with neighborhood revitalization efforts in 12 U.S. cities. The grant was presented Thursday by Foundation President and GM Director of Corporate Relations Vivian Pickard during the Washington Auto Show.
From financial support for new construction, home repair and rehabilitation, weatherization efforts and more, the GM Foundation's support of Habitat means that work will be underway in neighborhoods in Arlington and Austin, Texas; Atlanta; Baltimore; Chicago; Denver; Detroit and Lansing, Mich.; Los Angeles; Nashville; New Orleans and Phoenix.
This grant will help construct healthier neighborhoods and an improved sense of community, said Pickard. In addition to the Foundation's grant, our teamGM Cares employee volunteers will help low-income families rebuild and restore their homes and participate in other vital community projects.
In December, Chevrolet donated to Habitat for Humanity International 24 Express cargo vans to create the organization's first-ever fleet of mobile response units. The vehicles, filled with tools and equipment from Lowe's and Robert Bosch Tool Corporation, are currently dispatched with volunteers assisting with Hurricane Sandy response efforts in New York and New Jersey.
General Motors has already joined Habitat for Humanity to address a critical need following Hurricane Sandy, said Larry Gluth, senior vice president of US & Canada operations for Habitat for Humanity International. Today, the company is building on its commitment, and we are very grateful to the GM Foundation for its generosity.
Upon delivering the Habitat for Humanity mobile response units to the impacted region, teamGM Cares volunteers worked in a number of locations, including at the flood-ravaged Union Beach Emergency Medical Services station in Union Beach, N.J. The experience inspired Chevrolet's donation of a 2013 Chevrolet Tahoe to the Union Beach EMS squad that was on the front lines during Hurricane Sandy. Chevy Regional Director Dan Adamcheck announced the vehicle donation to Union Beach EMS Chief Carlos Rodriguez from the Chevrolet exhibit at the Washington Auto Show.
The Chevrolet Tahoe will serve as a daily reminder that the citizens of Union Beach have not been forgotten, said Rodriguez. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Chevrolet and to the teamGM Cares volunteers for traveling with us on the long road to recovery.
In addition to the GM Foundation and Chevrolet's support of Habitat for Humanity, GM Chairman and CEO Dan Akerson this month sold his Regal Turquoise 1958 Corvette in the Barrett-Jackson Collector Car Auction for $270,000 with all proceeds benefitting Habitat for Humanity Detroit's projects in the Morningside Commons neighborhood. Last year, Akerson and his wife, Karin, personally donated $1 million as the cornerstone contribution for the Leaders to ReBuild Detroit campaign.

'Quezon's Game' bags 4 awards at WorldFest-Houston Film Festival
MANILA — The WorldFest-Houston International Film Festival on Sunday awarded the film Quezon's Game as its Best Foreign Movie of the year. Pelikulang 'Quezon's Game' umani ng papuri sa film festival sa Texas WorldFest, based in Houston, Texas, is the oldest independent film and video festival in the world, according to its website. A collaboration between Star Cinema and streaming service iWant, Quezon's Game is a period film about how President Manuel L. Quezon provided refuge for more than a thousand Jewish people fleeing the Nazi regime in the 1930s. It is all based on a true story. I heard the story about 10 years ago and I just thought it was a story that needed to be told. So I started research and found that it's not documented in many history books, and not even known in the Philippines, director Matthew Rosen said in an earlier interview with ABS-CBN News. Just last January, Canada's Cinema World Fest gave the film the Award of Merit for a Drama Feature. Star Cinema and iWant’s ‘Quezon’s Game’ wins big at Canadian filmfest Filipino actors Raymond Bagatsing and Rachel Alejandro headline the film, and were supported by an international cast. Quezon's Game will make its Philippines premiere on May 29, and will be available for streaming on iWant following its theatrical run.

How the iconic photos taken from RFK's funeral train were almost lost forever
Fifty years ago this week, Robert F. Kennedy was assassinated moments after winning the California Democratic presidential primary. Following his funeral in New York, Kennedy’s body was carried by train to Washington, D.C. Along the way, thousands of mourners lined the tracks to pay their final respects. That train trip is enshrined in the memories of those who witnessed it and is the subject of a special photo exhibit on display now in New York. Vladimir Duthiers reports.

Make It Home With a VA Loan | Veterans First on Designing Spaces
Make It Home With a VA Loan - Veterans First on Designing Spaces
This video, which airs on the Lifetime show Designing Spaces, shows how important making it home is to Veterans and their families. For Veterans, the phrase “make it home” can conjure thoughts of longing – for loved ones halfway around the world, for certain foods you can only get at home, or for the safety and security that home provides. Home can be the reward – and the motivation – to get through a hard day.
While the journey to a new home is different for everybody, most agree that the best thing about homeownership is that it’s yours. You and your service to our country are unique, and your road to homeownership won’t be exactly like anyone else’s.
Any approved VA lender can process a loan, but will they take the time to know your journey, your trials and triumphs to get there? To some Veterans, choosing the right mortgage lender is as important as finding the right home. A VA lender who listens, can handle tough situations, and will step you through any challenges that arise – this is the lender that you want on your side.
Each of the stories below ends with an approved VA loan and a new home for a beloved member of our military community. But it’s not just about the loan or the house. Important relationships are formed along the way.
Home Is a New Start for a Surviving Spouse
Patricia is a surviving spouse who found it a great challenge to overcome the loss of her husband, David. She married David, a Marine Veteran, twice. The first time, he had PTSD episodes that Patricia didn’t understand until after his death. Patricia moved six times in seven years, never really knowing how to grieve David. Then one day, Patricia visited her husband’s grave at Arlington National Cemetery and wept. Unloading the burden of grief enabled Patricia to move on and use the home loan benefit her late husband had earned for her. She was able to buy a home with no VA funding fee to start anew building a life on her own. For Patricia, home means a new beginning.
Home Is Love for an Air Force Veteran
Alvin, a Veteran of the Air Force, had believed that his debt-to-income ratio was too high to qualify for VA loan approval. His loan officer, Celeste, saw through the challenge by getting to know Alvin’s situation better, thanks to detailed questions that a VA loan specialist knows to ask. By adding additional detail to his file, Celeste was able to get his ratios in check, and Alvin bought his new home where he and his fiancée, and her children, now live. Alvin named his new home, affectionately, Celeste. For Alvin, home is love.
Home Is Familiarity in a New Town
Chanda married her brother’s best friend, Daniel. The two men served together in the U.S. Air Force. Chanda and Daniel were serial renters for years. Then Chanda got promoted as an exchange administrator in the IT industry, and her new job would take them to another state. The family had to move fast. If it weren’t for the low rental inventory in their new town, Chanda and Daniel would not have considered buying a home. But the housing options were much better for buying. They had an infant son and two dogs, so a home of their own was sounding better and better.
The only problem was that they had to move in fewer than 30 days for Chanda to start her new job on time. Their loan officer, Andrew, recognized the urgency, and helped them close their loan with time to spare. For Chanda and Daniel, home is family.
Home Is Knowing Your Aging Parents Are Close By
Vernon is a U.S. Army Veteran who served in the Korean War. He and his wife, Linda, are getting up in years. Robbin (pictured above) is their doting daughter, who also owns a cake decorating business. Robbin’s aging parents lived in a mobile home 30 minutes from Auburn, Alabama, where Robbin lived. Robbin drove the one-hour round trip daily to check on her parents, who needed more and more help as they got older. Sometimes it meant Robbin would have to put off a cake-decorating job until she got home late at night. It came time for a change.
Robbin saw an opportunity for her parents to buy the home next to hers, but they’d have to sell their mobile home first to have enough money. They worked with a loan officer named Ben, who became the friend by their side through their complicated journey.
The mobile home was not an easy sale. They had to get it up to HUD standards, which meant some serious structural upgrades, many of which they did themselves in the Alabama summer heat to save money. They were able to sell the home and buy the one next to Robbin’s. Today, Robbin walks next door when her parents need her, or when she wants to treat them to one of her cakes. For Robbin, home is peace of mind.
For these Veterans, homeownership means a lot. And they couldn’t be happier with their VA loans from Veterans First.
No official U.S. military or other government agency endorsement is implied.
