Cairo (Arabic: القاهرة al-Qāhira) is the capital of Egypt and the largest city in the Arab World.[1] Nicknamed The City of a Thousand Minarets for its preponderance of Islamic architecture, Cairo has long been a center of the region's political and cultural life. Even before Cairo was established in the tenth century, the land composing the present-day city was the site of national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo. Cairo is also associated with Ancient Egypt due to its proximity to the Great Sphinx and the pyramids in nearby Giza.
Egyptians today often refer to Cairo as Maṣr (Arabic: مصر), the Egyptian Arabic pronunciation of the Arabic name for Egypt itself, emphasizing the city's continued role in Egyptian influence. Cairo has the oldest and largest film and music industries in the Arab World, as well as the world's second-oldest institution of higher learning, al-Azhar University. Many international media, businesses, and organizations have regional headquarters in the city, and the Arab League has been based in Cairo for most of its existence.
With a population of 6.8 million[2] spread over 214 square kilometers (83 sq mi), Cairo is by far the largest city in Egypt. With an additional ten million inhabitants just outside the city, Cairo resides at the center of the largest metropolitan area in Africa and the eleventh-largest urban area in the world.[1] Cairo, like many large cities in developing countries, suffers from high levels of pollution and traffic, but its metro currently the only on the African continent also ranks among the fifteen busiest in the world,[3] with over 700 million passenger rides annually.
The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known commonly as the Egyptian Museum, is home to the most extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities in the world. It has 136,000 items on display, with many more hundreds of thousands in its basement storerooms
Khan el-Khalili is an ancient shopping area, nothing less, but some of the shops have also their own little factories or workshops.
The suq (which is the Arabic name for bazaar, or market) dates back to 1382, when Emir Djaharks el-Khalili built a big caravanserai (or khan) right here. A caravanserai was a sort of hotel for traders, and usually the focal point for economic activity for any surrounding area. This caravanserai is still there, you just ask for the narrow street of Sikka Khan el-Khalili and Badestan.
The part of Cairo that contains Coptic Cairo and Fostat, which contains the Coptic Museum, Babylon Fortress, Hanging Church, the Greek Church of St. George, many other Coptic churches, the Ben Ezra Synagogue and Amr ibn al-'As Mosque.
The Cairo Tower is a free-standing concrete TV tower in Cairo. It stands in the Zamalek district on Gezira Island in the Nile River, in the city centre. At 187 meters, it is 43 meters higher than the Great Pyramid of Giza, which stands some 15 km to the southwest.
Over the ages, and as far back as four thousand years, Egypt stood as the land where civilizations have always met.[citation needed] The Pharaohs together with the Greeks and the Romans have left their imprints here. Muslims from the Arabian Peninsula, led by Amr ibn al-A'as, introduced Islam into Egypt. Khedive Mohammad Ali, with his Albanian family roots, put Egypt on the road to modernity. If anything, the cultural mix in this country is natural, given its heritage. Egypt can be likened to an open museum with monuments of the different historical periods on display everywhere.

Where to Go in Cairo, Egypt - Places to Visit in Cairo
Cairo, Egypt - The history, civilization, and the amount of treasure that this country carries always attract the tourists to it. Egypt is filled with lots of sightseeing tours that one should experience and there are different museums, temples, gardens, mosques, and other landmarks which always impress those visiting it.
We have been in Egypt and discovered that all the days one will manage to stay in this country will be filled with plans to be done and which will be related to the things one is supposed to see and which are related to different eras; you could visit those from the Islamic era, those related to the Pharaohs, as well as those which might have been built during the 20th century but still in the early beginning of it.
We are here to help you with some of the places we enjoyed visiting and those which we recommend, both for exploring the history of Egypt as well as for relaxing a little bit in the middle of all the walking you will be involved with.
The first suggestion is the great pyramids of Giza, which will probably already be the first on your list. The pyramids of Giza are from the Pharaonic time and they are the tombs for their owners because they believed in the afterlife and wanted a tomb that would be enough for their bodies as well as their belongings. In the pyramids you could pay a ticket to enter the whole area in general and you could also pay extra fees to enter the pyramid itself from the inside. (
The second Egyptian attraction to shed the lights on is the Egyptian Museum which carries different artifacts that tell people about the history of the country ( Some of these artifacts have been carried out in order to be placed in the new National Museum of Egyptian Civilization. The Egyptian Museum is found in the downtown area - Tahrir square - which means that you could have a walk in this place and see the old buildings which were inspired by the French buildings.
Egypt generally is known to be a place where there aren't lots of green areas to be spotted around but some old Egyptians managed to exert some effort and time to bring out parks to the people. From those which we consider good suggestions, there is Al Andalus park found on El Zamalek island and which was a gift from Khedive Ismail to his wife; the best thing about this park is that you will be walking by the Nile River and will also see some old statues there ( Another park is Al Azhar and this one is considered the largest in Cairo, Egypt, near the old Cairo place and which is one to choose for having dinner or lunch with a view of the citadel and old Cairo. And the last option here is also found in Zamalek and is the aquarium grotto garden which has always been the place for celebrities to have a walk and was even spotted in a lot of black and white Egyptian movies.
The journey is still going on. Since we have mentioned Al Azhar park which is only minutes away from old Cairo, then we have to mention that visiting old Cairo where El Moez street is found is considered a must ( there you will get the chance to see old buildings built in the Islamic design and you will also manage to see different mosques there, not just that, but will come across famous places or museums such as Beit El Sehemy ( Getting done with these attractions, you could have a walk until you reach Khan El Khalili market and enjoy a good cup of mint tea in one of the old Egyptian style coffee shops found there (
Again, there are lots of destinations in Cairo, Egypt, which are too close to one another. In addition to Al Azhar park and old Cairo which are so close, there is also Cairo citadel (also known as Salah Al Din citadel) and the religious community which are all around the same area. In Cairo citadel you will walk there to check different mosques including the most famous one, Muhammad Ali mosque, and different museums as well ( Getting done with the tour in Salah Al Din citadel, you could then move forward to the religious community, the place where the three different religions are found in the same area; the hanging church, Amr Ibn El-Aas mosque, as well as Bin Ezra synagogue (
There are some other landmarks in Cairo which you will need to visit and one of them is Cairo Tower. This tower was considered the tallest building in Africa for 10 years before another was built in South Africa, so it is now considered the tallest in Egypt and North Africa for about 50 years now. This place will give you the chance to view central Cairo from above or even have dinner at the rotating restaurant found up there (

Egypt Vacation Travel Video Guide
Travel video about destination Egypt.
Egypt is a land of monumental temples, gigantic pyramids, the River Nile and the mysterious Sphinx: 5000 years of history.Founded by Alexander The Great in 332 B.C., the city of Alexandria is located in the Nile Delta and it was here that Caesar and Mark Anthony fell under Cleopatra’s spell. Cairo is Africa’s largest city and the heart of the Arab world, extreme poverty living next to opulent wealth, and modern, Western boutiques next to ancient souks. The Cairo Museum is home to the most extensive collection of Egyptian antiquities, including the golden mask and tomb of Tutankamun. Towering above almost any other human achievement are the impressive three pyramids of Gisa. The Cheops Pyramid, the world’s largest single construction, took four hundred thousand workers twenty years to build. It weighs as much as all the cathedrals in Europe put together and spans an area of 53,000 square metres - the height of a fifty storey skyscraper. In the middle of today’s modern city of Luxor, known as the ‘Capital City Of The Pharaohs’, the Luxor Temple stretches along the eastern banks of the Nile and, not far away, the temple complex of Karnak and the Amun Temple. 67 kilometres from Luxor, on the western bank of the Nile, lies the Temple Of Dendera, the most important place of worship for the love goddess, HATHOR, whose heavenly appearance was portrayed by the body of a cow. At Aswan, the landscape of the Nile is enchanting, but it is the stone temples of Abu Simbel that take one back to ancient Egypt, land of the Pharaohs, and archaeological paradise.

Old Cairo, Moez Street; Walking through the History of Egypt
Old Cairo, Moez Street, Cairo, Egypt - The historical place of old Cairo is part of Cairo that we know at this moment and it is the place that hosts Moez street which is filled with historical buildings and mosques (
Old Cairo is the place where lots of the old buildings and attractions where found, it is not just about the mosques ( but there are also some old churches and one synagogue which are found until these days. Although a lot of people think that old Cairo is just about the place where El Moez street is found, it is actually larger than that and goes to the religious community where Amr Ibn El-Aas mosque, the hanging church, as well as Ben Ezra synagogue are found (
El Moez street is named after Al Moez Ldin Allah Al Fatimi, the fourth caliph of the Fatimid dynasty, and dates back to the Islamic era, which you will definitely notice from the different Islamic buildings and the numerous mosques which are all found in the same area.
This street which is one of Egypt attractions is one of the oldest streets found in Cairo and it reaches one kilometer long, starting from Bab Al Futuh in the north to Bab Zuweila in the South. According to different researches and inspections done, it was found that this street is the place where most of the medieval architectural treasures of the Islamic world are found.
There are several historical mosques and buildings found in El Moez street, so being on a tour in this place will be filled with passing by lots of Islamic attractions. Visiting this place is considered a must since it is one of the treasures of Cairo.
Going on a tour at El Moez street could start from Al Azhar mosque, going through Bab Zuweila, which is considered one of the landmarks of the place, and then crossing over to Al Hussein mosque which is considered one of the holiest in the Islamic world and thus is considered one of the most important to the Egyptians as well.
Passing through these initial Islamic buildings in the street, you could then move further until you reach Al Hakim mosque, Bab El Fetouh, and Bab Al Nasr, from there you will move to Mosque-Madrasa of Sultan Hassan which is considered a remarkable place for the look of the building and its massive size as well as for the components which are found inside, and finally you will keep moving until you reach Mosque Ibn Tulun which is considered the oldest in the place and the largest according to the land it is built on. At the end of this Islamic historical trip in old Cairo, you will reach Khan El Khalili which is one of the major souks of the Islamic era and which is now one of the places that sell jewelry as well as other needs and which is one of the places to visit in Cairo that comes along the other touristic attractions (
In order to rescue this place and the treasures found in it, the government managed to do a lot of renovations for the place where those buildings taller than the historical ones were brought to good heights, were the buildings were renovated, the streets were done in the old manners, and a drainage system was installed to protect the buildings from any excess water. The best part was making this place an open-air museum were vehicles are not allowed to enter it during specific hours of the day, giving people the chance to walk through it without worrying.
With all these different attractions to come across in Moez street, people should make sure that they are dressed appropriately for the place, with the shoulders and legs covered, and women should also make sure that they are carrying something which they could cover their heads with in order to enter the mosques.
The area surrounding El Moez street is also a treasure gem where you could visit Beit El Seheimy ( Zeinab Khatoun, Al Azhar area which is the place were the oldest university once started, and where there are lots of sold goods found there as well that people go for.
With all the different buildings and mosques which one could find in this old street found in old Cairo, Moez street should be one of the different things to do in Egypt which people should always place in their to-do list when they travel to Egypt, because this walking tour in Cairo within the Islamic buildings will manage to give them a different view of the whole place.
There are other places to visit in old Cairo, such as the religious community (Mogamaa El-Adyan), visiting Cairo citadel ( going to Al Azhar park ( and enjoying every single detail related to these places which are found in the same area and which are all related to old Cairo.
Definitely a place which we recommend when it comes to Egypt, to check the old Islamic buildings and see the hidden gems.
