Life inside North Korea: the power of Juche explained
On a rare press trip to Pyongyang, we were given a guided tour of the Juche Tower. The flame-topped structure is a symbol of Juche, the philosophy of the ruling Korean Workers' party, which was invented by Kim Il-sung, one of the country’s 'eternal leaders' and grandfather of Kim Jong-un. Juche is the ideology of self-reliance that for a time sustained the economy until stagnation

Visiting the Juche Tower in Pyongyang. A wonderful view of the silent city.
The tower is 150 m high (170 m incl the torch). It contains 25.550 blocks of stone, one for each day of the Great Leader Kim Il Sung´s life until his 70th birthday.

Here you can see Kim Il Sung Square in Pyongyang, with the huge Grand People's Study House in the background.
The video then shows the Taedong River and eventually focuses on the Juche Tower (which is 170 metres tall).
1:38 If you notice you can see one of our travellers taking pictures from the top of the Juche Tower. The image then blurs out and the views then shown are from the exact point where our traveller is standing.
The views you see then are from the top of the tower where you can see the Ryugyong Hotel, The Grand People's Study House, the Ice Rink (the white building that looks like a crown behind the Grand People's Study House), etc.

Great Party, Rosy Korea
A grand art performance Great Party, Rosy Korea was given with splendor here Sunday to celebrate the 70th founding anniversary of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK).
A floating stage which was set up in the middle of the Taedong River with the Tower of the Juche Idea for a background was peculiarly decorated.
The river looked more beautiful at night with twelve famous sceneries in the Songun era shown on the electronic displays on both sides of the stage and the multi-color dancing fountain.
Kim Yong Nam, Pak Pong Ju and other senior party and state officials watched the performance.
Among the audience were the congratulatory groups of Koreans in Japan and overseas Koreans, delegations and compatriots who visited the socialist homeland on the occasion of the 70th founding anniversary of the WPK and the chief of the Pyongyang mission of the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front.
Present there on invitation were foreign delegations visiting the DPRK to take part in the celebrations of the said anniversary, diplomatic envoys and representatives of international bodies here and their wives, military attaches of foreign embassies here and their wives and other foreign guests.
The performance was given by 10 000 persons including famous former and incumbent artistes of the Mansudae Art Troupe, the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble and the Wangjaesan Art Troupe, creators, artistes, teachers and students of art organizations in the army and society and art education institutions.
The performance was divided into two parts.
Their repertoire included male solo and chorus Song of Comradeship and female solo and chorus Cantata to Comrade Kim Jong Il, all-people hymn.
Among them were 70 and 80 years old singers and instrumentalists.
The audience broke into enthusiastic applause when the Pochonbo Electronic Ensemble, maker of new history of electronic music of Korean style, started playing music Oh My Country Full of Happiness and presented famous songs in the era of the Workers' Party.
There was an introduction of the creators who remained faithful to the party by producing famous works of the era while the atmosphere of the performance was revved up and fireworks were displayed.
Artistes of the Wangjaesan Art Troupe presented songs including Thunder over Jong Il Peak and modern dances, peculiarly decorating the stage.
The performance reached its climax with loud chorus Ode to General Kim Jong Un, monumental hymn in the new era of the Juche revolution.
It ended with epilogue Glory to Our Great Party and We Will Go to Mt. Paektu.
At the end of the performance the fireworks celebrating the anniversary were displayed.
