Nagore (sometimes spelled Nagoor) is a town in the Nagapattinam District, Tamil Nadu, India. It is located approximately 16 km south of Karaikal and 4 km north of Nagapattinam.
Dargah (Muslim shrine) dedicated to the 16th-century saint Nagore Andavar (literally the Lord (aandavar) of Nagore; also popularly called Meeran Sahib or Qadir Wali) is located there, and serves as a pilgrim center.

The main line of the metre gauge railway system in the Coromandel coast connected Chennai with Tiruchchirappalli via Viluppuram, Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai (Mayavaram) and Thanjavur junctions.[1] The Chennai – Thanjavur – Tiruchirappalli line continues to be thought of as the main line.[2][3]

In 1861 the Great Southern Railway of India built the 125 km (78 mi) long 1,676 mm (5 ft 6 in) wide broad gauge line between Nagapattinam and Tiruchirapalli (then known as Trichinopoly) and the line was opened to traffic next year.[4] It was a new development south of Chennai. After taking over of GSIR by South Indian Railway Company in 1874, the Nagapattinam – Tiruchirapalli line was converted to 1,000 mm (3 ft 3 3⁄8 in) wide metre gauge in 1875.[5]

The South India Railway Company laid a 715 km (444 mi) long metre gauge trunk line from Chennai to Thoothukudi via Mayiladuthurai and Thanjavur in 1880.[6] The 82.67 km (51 mi) long Tindivanam-Cuddalore Port (then known as Cuddalore Junction) sector, 27.60 km (17 mi) long Cuddalore Port-Porto Novo sector, 19.71 km (12 mi) long Shyali-Mayiladuthurai sector and 70.42 km (44 mi) long Mayiladuthurai-Thanjavur setor were opened in 1877, thereby connecting Tindivanam to the already opened Tiruchirappalli-Nagapattinam line.[7]

Following an agreement between the British and the French, a metre gauge line was laid between Puducherry and Viluppuram around 1877–1879.[5]

A 1,067 mm (3 ft 6 in) wide line was laid between Arakkonam and Kanchipuram (then known as Conjeevaram) in 1865 by Indian Tramway Company.[4] The line was converted to metre gauge in 1878 and opened in 1891. The Chengalpattu-Walajabad line was opened in 1880.[7]

Viluppuram was connected to Vriddhachalam railway station in 1927.[7]

The Mayiladuthurai-Tarangambadi line was opened in 1926 and was closed in 1987

Go for a avalue to cover by fishermen village with danish styles street very old building and beach are the main attraction . Only thing problem is that there is no good restaurants nearby.


It is better to avoid visiting here on scorching sun. It recommanded to go by the Evening early. Morning time to enjoy it.

Idols of deities in Someswaran Temple in Tamil Nadu

Someswaran Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu, India.

Someswar Temple is situated in the southern portion of Sri Sarangapani temple. Legend is that the temple shared a larger space during initial construction, but later Sarangapani Temple adjacent to it occupied more space.The nearest railway station is in Kumbakonam, about 2 kilometres from the town. The nearest airport is in Trichy.

The temple has a square sanctum (garbhagriha) which is surrounded by a narrow passage way. The sanctum is connected to a closed mantapa (hall) whose walls are decorated with pilasters and sculptures in frieze. The closed mantapa is connected to a spacious open mantapa comsisting of four large projecting bays (area between four pillars). The piers leading to the sanctum and those facing outward from the open mantapa are the standard Yali (mythical beast) pillars. The eastern gopuram is a well executed, typical 16th century structure.

There are several notable sculptures and decorative features in the complex. An impressive pillar (kambha or nandi) pillar) stands near the tall tower over the entrance gate (gopura). The tower itself exhibits well sculptured images of gods and goddesses from Hindu mythology. The open mantapa consists of forty eight pillars with carvings of divinities in frieze. To the north is the navagraha temple (shrine for the nine planets) with twelve pillars, each pillar representing a saint (rishi). The entrance to the sanctum exhibits sculptures of two door keepers (dvarapalakas). Other notable works of art include sculptures that depict King Ravana lifting Mount Kailash in a bid to appease the god Shiva, Durga slaying Mahishasura (a demon), images of the Nayanmar saints (Tamil Shaivaite saints), depictions of the Girija Kalyana (marriage of Parvati to the god Shiva), the saptarishis (seven sages of Hindu lore). Recent excavations at the temple site has revealed the existence of a temple tank (kalyani) which could be 1200 years old.
