Funchal in Madeira - part 1
presents Funchal in Madeira.
Funchal is the capital city of Madeira and is a favourite holiday destination. And, rightly so since it is blessed with sunshine throughout the year. It is a perfect location for tourists to the island to base themselves.
Although the rest of Madeira island has plenty of places to visit, there are a variety of local attractions, places to see and things to do in Funchal itself. No matter what your tastes, you are bound to find something that will interest and entertain you.
Here, in the first part of a series, we look at some of the more historical aspects of the city. We cannot feature them all here since there are so many - the city recently celebrated its five hundred year anniversary - but, we highlight the more famous buildings that can be found in and around the city centre
Sé Cathedral - Stands at the heart of the city and dates from 1514. It has a statue of Pope John Paul II within its grounds.
São Lourenço Palace - This building was once a fortress and was home to the early Madeira Governors. Over the centuries it has been refurbished and is now a luxurious Palace open to the public for guided tours at selected times.
Rotunda do Infante - This globe structure fountain was designed to reflect Portugal's world wide endeavours. It stands at the bottom of Santa Catarina Park and is a good reference point for first time visitors to Funchal.
The Municipal Square - Here, three historic buildings embrace a public plaza. The Igreja do Colégio, which was founded by the Jesuits who settled on the island, is believed to date from 1647. The Bishop's Palace, dating from 1600 and now housing the Museum of Sacred Art. The Municipal Town Hall, which was originally built for the Count of Carvalhal in the 18th century.
The Old City Gate - This was reconstructed in 2004 and follows the original design that dates back to 1689. The stone crown, royal arms and the inscribed stonework are from the original structure, they having been preserved in 1911 when the obsolete city gate was demolished to make way for modernisation undertakings.
The Terreiro da Luta monument - This monument was built in 1927 as a thanks giving for peace returning after the ending of the First World War. Standing at 15 metres high, it is the tallest monument on the island.

(30 Nov 2019) CHRISTMAS SEASON SWITCHED ON IN LISBON
Christmas festivities officially started in Portugal's capital, Lisbon, on Friday.
People gathered in Commercial Square in downtown Lisbon to see the lights turned on on a 30 metre (98 foot) high Christmas tree made from lights.
Lisbon will be decorated with 2 million lamps during the holiday season, City Hall announced.

Botanical Garden and Market Hall Funchal Madeira
On our day in Funchal we took a taxi to the botanical garden. After visiting the garden, we took the cable car to Monte. From there you can take a ride with a wooden sled down to the old town. Especially colorful and always worthwhile is a visit to the market hall.

The Island's Capital City
The picturesque city of Funchal is set perfectly on the sunny south coast of Madeira, its backdrop a protective ring of green mountains — a huge natural amphitheatre that faces the balmy blue Atlantic Ocean.
Summer is never too hot and winter is pleasantly mild, making Funchal a true 'year-round' destination and the ideal stage for some of the most exclusive and world-renowned Events, namely the spectacular New Year's Fireworks and the wonderful Flower Festival.
The 'Old' centre, with its port and promenade, quaint and narrow winding streets, shops, cafés, bars and restaurants, is ideal for idle wandering; one could spend a whole holiday here and not get bored, or hungry! Points of interest include the Cathedral, Theatre, Town Hall and waterfront. The Madeira Story Centre is well-worth a visit, whilst the cable-car just opposite provides a panoramic ride to Monte, in the cool mountains.
Heading west out of town along Avenida do Infante, past the Casino and on to Estrada Monumental will take you to the famous Lido suburb. This is where you will find most hotels and the lovely promenade that starts at the salt-water pools and winds along the cliffs for a mile or more to Praia Formosa, a long pebble beach with a spectacular view of Cabo Girão, Europe's highest cliff.
So stay in Funchal, see the sights and use its central location as the ideal jumping off point for touring the island. Don’t forget that you can book an airport transfer to pick you up when you arrive and take you to your hotel and also to take you back to the airport when it’s time to leave.

This apartment is situated in the heart of Funchal center. you can easily walk to anywhere in Funchal. you have supermarket´s, Bakery´s, most famous Cafe and Restaurants at your door steep. Enjoy a nice walk by the Marina at night and return home with in minutes.
At walking distance to historic Ze Cathedral (450m), Ritz Café (100m), Marina (200m), Gardens (100m), Cafes (50m), Shopping (20m), Old Town, Open Market (Mercado dos Lavradores), Barreirinha Beach Complex, Wine Lodges, Museums, Churches, City Hall Square, Cable car, CR7 (Cristiano Ronaldo Museum). Next to the apartment there is a bus stop, bakery, mini-market, laundry, restaurant.
There are a large diversity of offers in the área: Taxi, public transportation, seightseeing, cultural, extreme and nautical sports, fitness center. It´s near the old town.
If you would like to go to swim nearby you will find Barreirinha beach complex (short walking distance), situated in old town, near Bar BBC (Barreirinha Bar Café) and restaurant Riso (Risottoria Del Mundo), great place to relax and swim, only 2 euros

скажем так, популярную часть города. При всей своей исторической ценности, данный квартал влачил довольно жалкое существование - многие дома были просто-напросто заброшены. По словам автора проекта, на начальном этапе сложней всего было
уговорить владельцев зданий отдать их на растерзание. Зато, когда дело пошло - вся округа заиграла новыми
красками.
Помимо самой Санта Марии, все примыкающие улочки оформлены в похожем стиле.
