Travel Guide to India (Part 1): Calcutta
In Part One of my India travel video guide, I begin my travels in India with Calcutta (Kolkata). India had long been on my bucket list of countries to travel to in the world, and in April, 2013, I finally made it there, starting with Calcutta, with no better reason than the fact was I knew so little about that part of the country.
Calcutta was once the capital of the British Empire in India, and today it's home to over 14 million people, which means the city itself is a crowded, dense, loud, but endlessly fascinating place to explore. In this video I explore the alleyways and grand buildings that make up B.B.D. Bagh, the area where the city was founded.
After checking out a parade (a very common occurrence I was to later learn) and grabbing a roadside cup of chai, I stop at the home of famed poet and writer Rabindranath Tagore, the first Indian to win the Nobel Prize, and whose home is a great place to learn about Calcutta's cultural history.

Science City, Kolkata is the largest science centre in the Indian subcontinent under National Council of Science Museums, Ministry of Culture, Government of India, is at the crossing of Eastern Metropolitan Bypass and J B S Haldane avenue, Kolkata. It is considered by some people as the most distinguished landmark in post-independence Kolkata . Saroj Ghose, the first director general of NCSM, who is credited with having conceptualised this centre in 1997.[6] This centre was inaugurated by two parts: the ‘Convention Centre Complex’ was unveiled on 21 December 1996 by Paul Jozef Crutzen in presence of the then chief minister Jyoti Basu and the whole centre was opened by the then prime minister Inder Kumar Gujral on 1 July 1997. On 10 January 2010, prime minister of India, Manmohan Singh laid the foundation stone for the second phase of Science City in presence of the then chief minister of West Bengal, Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee.
ATTRACTIONS
There are few major attractions which must not be missed. The Space theatre is an important part of the science city and there are many shows that are held during the day. There is a Dynamotion Hall which provides hands-on and interactive exhibits on different topics of science. Earth Exploration hall in science city provides you with a better overview of our planet.
The evolution park is a theme tour of 1300 square meter covering 7 large walk-through dioramas with 71 prehistoric robotic animals, 26 dinosaurs and 140 early plant models. It shows the story of the evolution of life and also tells about the extinct species. There is another Maritime centre which depicts the maritime history of India. A science park in the outdoors is a major attraction for the kids.

Kolkata Travel Vlog | Visit India Travel Guides
Join us as we visit Kolkata in this travel vlog covering as much as we in the city as our final destination on our India trip. After a long train ride from Varanasi we finally arrived in Calcutta with less than 48 hours to visit the city. The health of our group as a whole had really deteriorated at this point with Audrey and my Mom being really sick and my Dad struggling with a cold.
On our first morning it was just my Dad and I wandering from Colootola east of the maiden along Garer Maath and Elliot Park en route to visit Victoria Memorial. Along the way we spotted numerous cricket matches which we stopped to watch for a bit. By the end of that it was quite hot and humid so we took a yellow taxicab back to our hotel on Sudder street.
The following day, after my parents left to return home to Canada, Audrey and I ventured nearby to the Sir Hogg Stuart Market which honestly was a bust given the hassle factor. Instead we decided to enjoy some rooftop sunset views of Kolkata before ending our last evening by doing a pulled rickshaw tour of Calcutta at night.

Kolkata Travel Vlog | Visit India Travel Guides video transcript:
Good morning from Kolkata. We have made it to our final destination in India. Sam is going to show you around Calcutta with his Dad.
We didn’t venture too far on our first day. Our hotel was located in Colootola just east of the maidan, so we mostly wandered the park on foot & watched a bit of cricket, before heading down to Victoria Memorial.
So the one thing you'll notice if you're touring around Kolkata just on foot is just how popular cricket is here in this city. It is just everywhere you go, anytime there is a park or an open space you'll see a bunch of men playing cricket.
So next up we're visiting Victoria Memorial Hall and to visit the garden it is like the cost of a cup of chai on a train in India. It is only 10 Rupees. If you want to go visit the museum it is 200 but we're uh a little tired today so we're just going to walk around the premises and take some shots.
The Victoria Memorial was built to commemorate Queen Victoria after her passing, and it officially opened in 1921. Inside they have a collection of Indian paintings and Western paintings, as well as rare photographs, old manuscripts and coin collections.
Today is our last day in Kolkata. We just said goodbye to Sam's parents this morning. We're flying out tomorrow. So we're going to do some sightseeing. It is almost sunset time so we're thinking of doing a rickshaw tour around part of the city.
We went out for a little walk around our neighbourhood. We found some street art, took photos of the iconic yellow cabs, watched a game of cricket on the street, and then befriended a sweet dog.
Visiting the Sir Stuart Hogg Market was a bust. We were surrounded by a group of people who just wanted to sell us stuff and take us to their shops.
We are doing a tour by pull rickshaw because apparently these are typical of Kolkata. This is what you do in Kolkata.
That is a wrap from Kolkata. We are all packed up and ready to go. That is the end of our journey in India and what a journey it was. Oh my gosh like yeah. It has been a crazy month. It has been a rollercoaster ride of highs & lows and we'll be talking more in a travel tips video.
This is part of our Travel in India video series showcasing Indian food, Indian culture and Indian cuisine.

7 Wonders of India: Victoria Memorial
Situated in Kolkata, the Victoria Memorial is a white marble building surrounded by a sprawling garden. Designed by Sir William Emerson in an architectural style similar to Belfast City Hall, a black bronze Angel of Victory, holding a bugle in her hand, sits at the apex of the dome above the Memorial. It was built by British Viceroy Lord Curzon in the memory of Queen Victoria in the Italian Renaissance style with elements of Mughal architecture incorporated in it. It currently serves as a museum and a tourist attraction. Built between 1906 and 1921, it is situated at the southern end of the Maidan.

Calcutta - The city and the heritage - Part 1
As Calcutta approached its tercentenary year, Vikas Bhattacharya, celebrated painter was busy working on a difficult but challenging assignment one of the cit's leading newspapers had commissioned him to recreate job charnock landing on the banks of the river Hooghly. 300 years back in 1690 it is charnock the englishman who most historian give credit for founding Calcutta, no visual record of char-knock voyage exists but Vikas put together the arresting interpretetion of the englishman's first visit.
The desicion by this english trader to choose Sutanuti, a small village on the banks of river Hooghly was made after he had rejected a number of other sights. 24h August 1690 the day charnock arrived was gray and overcast and Sutanuti welcomed him with a spate of showers.
No city in the world can ever be attributed to the genius of a single individual yet the seeds of metropolital Calcutta are found in Charnock selection of the Sutanuti village as a trading post the british and the impetus this decision provided.
