Places we visited:
Hotel: We stayed at Hotel the Roosenvelt.
We have been climbing the Lange Jan, ate at restaurant Scherp, and walked the 'kunst en cultuurroute' Middelburg. We've seen quite a few galeries in town!
We took lunch at the Kloveniersdoelen and went to the Zeeuws Museum.
--------------------------------------
Middleburg was built in the 9th century, as the middle of three strongholds. To protect the people from the plundering Vikings. And it still has a strong historic character nowadays.
If you walk through the small streets, surrounded by buildings like this, you might not realize it, but this city was hit hard during the second world war. Though the bombing of Rotterdam is more famous, both cities kind of looked like THIS, after the Nazi's visited.
But Middleburg did an amazing job rebuilding her beautiful historic highlights.
The Abbey for example, once the centre of a large monastic complex. It will provide you with some peace and quiet moments right in the center of town.
The impressive town hall is right on the market square, built in a beautiful gothic style. Look at all the details they created! It was voted as the second most beautiful building in the Netherlands a few years ago, and I can see why you'd love it.
And if you ever get lost in the little streets of the city center, you only have to look up for long John! Or Lange Jan, as we call him in Dutch. He's a tall friend you'll see from almost every part of the city center. Not just beautiful from the outside, but also to be enjoyed from within!
Well we have to go down to experience this city in a totally different way! Because Middelburg is also a very artistic place. They say there are even more galeries than cafees in town. And every first Sunday of the month, the artists just let you catch a glimpse of their art and workspace. Look for this flag on any building, and you're invited to enter!
An other cool thing happened in the middle of our art tour. We came across this little house here, and the owner just invited us in. Well guess what! He showed us the old fashioned kitchen under his house. It's not a museum or anything, just a private collection.
I love little discoveries and friendly moments like this one!
These tapestries are telling the story of Zeeland’s great sea battles against the Spanish at the beginning of the Eighty Years’ War. The Spanish fleet was much mighier, but the locals had the advantage of knowing the area. It's funny to see the propaganda in the scenes, but it also gives a good insight of a war at sea near the end of the 16th century. It's made and preserved very well.
Our weekend of Middelburg is almost over, but before we go home, I must show you the sea!
The Dutch are famous for conquering the water, and a big part of that is the Delta works.
It's built in the river delta to protect the land from the sea. Aaand...... there it is!
Well I am glad I'm all dry again. Only thing left to say is.....

Netherlands weekend tip : Middelburg - Zeeland - Walcheren #Netherlands
Middelburg is a municipality and a city in the south-western Netherlands and the capital of the province of Zeeland - Walcheren. Situated on the central peninsula of the Zeeland province, Midden-Zeeland (consisting of former islands Walcheren, Noord-Beveland and Zuid-Beveland).
Town Hall
The late-gothic town hall of Middelburg is situated at the market of Middelburg, Zeeland. It is considered one of the finest gothic buildings in the Netherlands. Construction began in 1452 and was supervised by several generations of the Flemish family of architects Keldermans. Construction was completed in 1520, the town hall received a facade with gothic windows, red-white shutters, smaller turrets and twenty-five statues of Zeeland's counts and countesses. The building has one main tower, which the Middelburgers call 'Malle Betje'. This mocking name comes from the fact it used to run behind the town's other clock tower, the 'lange Jan'. A meat-auction or 'meathall' used to be situated in the building, which had a separate entrance. Whereas the town hall itself is still used for weddings, since 2004 it's spaces are in use by the Roosevelt Academy, the local college. The former meat hall has been in use as an exhibition space for the SBKM since 1980.
Lange Jan
Abbey Tower is a 90.5 meter high bell tower which belongs to the abbey complex in Middelburg. He is situated on the south wall of the single-nave Church Choir. The tower is nicknamed the Long John and is number eleven on the list of highest church towers in the Netherlands. Abbey Tower can be climbed fee to about halfway through 207 steps up. One has then through the windows in the tower a beautiful view of Middelburg.
Windmill De Hoop is a former corn and hulling mill to Vlissingen in Middelburg
Windmill De Seismolen is a (former) mill at the Seis in the Dutch city of Middelburg. It is a round stone mill which was built in 1728 and is the remaining oldest mill in Middelburg.

Vlissingen & Middelburg, Zeeland, Netherlands 4K
The Zeeland province of the Netherlands is located in the south-western region of the country. Known as “sea-land,” the province consists of a series of small islands with a strip of land that borders the country of Belgium. The capital of Zeeland is Middelburg. Tourism plays a major role in the province’s economy as the local beaches become tourist hotspots in the summer. German tourists, in particular, flock to Zeeland to enjoy its beautiful weather and stunning beaches.

Old Dutch town hall in De Rijp is still used for weddings Raadhuis De Rijp Noord-Holland
The Town Hall of De Rijp is a former city hall in De Rijp, Netherlands. The government offices have moved, but the former waag and burgerzaal are still used for weddings and other official proceedings. The rest of the building is in use as the local visitor's center of De Rijp. The building was designed by the architect-engineer Jan Leeghwater. He designed and built it 1630, after he had already occupied the location as mayor and manager of the Beemster polder project, completed in 1612. The building survived a fire in 1654 that damaged most of the town south of this building. The former mayor's office and vierschaar can only be seen by appointment, but visitors are welcome on the ground floor, which has a short film about the history of De Rijp for visitors, and where the old weighing scales from 1632 can be seen. One of three old fire hoses designed by Jan van der Heyden in 1672, which were formerly in use by the Town fire brigade can also be seen there. This apparatus has been kept in working order and is used occasionally for demonstrations.

750 jaar Middelburg, Netherlands, 1217-1967
A look back in time at the celebration of 750 years of city rights of Middelburg, on the peninsula of Walcheren, province of Zeeland, with its beautiful city hall. Marketday and costumes you won't see nowadays. The city hall was destroyed in the early days of WW2. Only the walls survived. It has been completely restored meanwhile.

Holland7 - Veere, Middelburg
Two towns in Zeeland. Veere is a small vissershaven (fisherman's harbor -- I don't know if we have a word for this) that's popular with tourists -- especially German tourists, apparently. The menu at the cafe was printed in Dutch and German. Middelburg is a much larger town (~50k people to Veere's 1.5k).
Oh, and a minor pet peeve of mine: people who pronounce the Roo in Roosevelt to rhyme with shoe. It doesn't.
I'm still tweaking the format of the title pages and haven't come up with one I like yet. I accidentally left off the date this time -- still 6 Juli.
I have at least two, maybe three more videos to make from the footage of this same day...with another 12 days' worth of vacation after that. This is gonna take a while.

Netherlands Typical Dutch street organ music Nederland Verlicht draaiorgel in Middelburg
Close to the beautiful town hall of Middelburg, I saw this organ with light decorated. Never before had I seen such an organ so I filmed it. Typical Dutch tune.... He played the song You only may look ... but but don`t touch written by Johnny Hoes.
Illuminated street organ. An organ plays automatically. Previously, there were organ books needed. Today they use a computer. The repertoire of an organ is now very extensive, because no large amount of organ books have to take. Especially in the Netherlands there is a street organ culture.
